3GS is still being sold, and it would be great if Apple supported it with iOS 6, although, I don't expect it.

However, what if Apple offers iOS 6 to 3GS users as a paid option? They used to charge for updates.

Would you pay?

I'll answer as if i had a 3GS because i used to own one while iOS 5 was available before i got my 4s.

If i still had my 3GS, there's no way in hell you could get me to pay for iOS 6. iOS 5 slowed it down enough, there's no way it could keep up with iOS 6.

And yes you are correct, they probably won't support the 3GS on iOS 6

I think iOS 6 will support the iPhone 3GS because I'm almost certain that the iPhone 4 will be supported. The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS are practically the same in terms of hardware. There are some slight differences but nothing major.

But I don't think they will ask a fee for the upgrade.

As someone who uses a 3GS as an iPod, I'd only consider paying if one, it actually ran better than iOS 5 (I doubt it) and two, it was 4.99 or less.

But like others have said, I doubt the 3GS will get iOS 6 support. When iOS 6 does come out , the 3GS will be 3 devices behind.

they aren't the same in terms of hardware, the 4 has a lot more power behind it.

i think iOS 6 we will see support for the 3gs, but it won't get all features.
like the 3g and iOS 4

iphone 4 will get everything

I was actually really happy with iOS 5 on my 3GS. It made the phone feel noticeably faster to me than iOS 4 lol

3GS and 4 are the same hardware. They have the same architecture, ARM Cortex-A8, the same CPU, the same GPU, the only differences are 200MHz in CPU speed and twice the RAM

Consumers don't want iOS 6 on 3GS. They want iPhone 5.

Nice of you to be the voice of the whole consumer market.

I experienced iOS 5 as faster and more stable then iOS 4 on my iPhone 4 and 3GS. I did a clean restore though. If the iPhone 4 would get iOS6 and the iPhone 3GS not than that would be a stupid marketing trick from Apple.

I agree, if iPhone 4 can run iOS 6, so will 3GS, I forgot to mention above that while the architecture is the same, iPhone 4 has to render everything at four times the resolution, so in some benchmarks and areas 3GS is actually faster.

Now as for the support, on one hand, Apple supporting 3GS this long is terrific, I mean just look at the Android update mess and WP7. 3GS is a phone from 2009 and it is still very relevant and it received two major updates, pretty much what has been standard for Apple in terms of updates.

However, unlike before, Apple has three phones on the market now, instead of two, 3GS is still being sold, it would be very un-Apple like to leave their customers who just bought the phone without support and updates.

So this is where I got the idea of paid updates. For two years, you get two free major updates and after that, if you want updates and if your phone supports it, you'll have to pay a small amount.

All in all, I'm not expecting an update for 3GS but it would be fantastic if Apple supports it.

It's not about whether the iPhone 3GS will run iOS 6 or not, but whether it will run it well and the answer is likely no. The iPhone 3GS struggles enough as it is with iOS 5, it will likely provide an unsatisfactory experience on iOS 6.

The 3GS my kid uses works perfectly fine with iOS5. I am not sure what people in this thread are going on about. Maybe they are referring to their experience of apps, such as graphic-intensive games?

The lack of memory is the primary reason that the iPhone 3GS and current iPod touch really struggle. More than likely that the 3GS won't be supported.

As for the OP question...it doesn't make any logical sense. Apple don't charge for iOS software updates now. Why would they charge for an update just because it's out of compatibility otherwise...?

It works fine, but it's somewhat slower than on iOS 4 which also was somewhat slower than on iOS 3.

The EULA for the iPhone stated that users will get two years of free software updated from the introduction of the device. This leaves the possibility that Apple could charge for iOS 6.

Don't forget the the iPad 1 has 256Mb of ram as well and it came with iOS 3.2. While it is unknown if it will be getting iOS 6, I'd say it and the 3Gs have an equal chance of getting it. Even with the argument the the iPod Touch 4G has 256Mb of ram as well, let's look at past devices. The iPhone 2G, iPod Touch 1G, and the iPhone 3G all had the exact same hardware. But Apple left the first generation drives out when iOS 4 came out. While iOS 4 should have left out the iPhone 3G as well, Apple couldn't because they'd be in violation of their own EULA.

I still use my own 3Gs for many things. I've also found that its graphical performance is better than the iPhone 4. If iOS 6 does support the 3Gs and is eye candy heavy, it'll run better one the 3Gs and horrible on the iPad 1. I've also found the my 3Gs struggles no more than my iPod Touch 4G to run iOS 5 and less than my iPad 1.

I will admit on day one it definitely seemed faster, but after i got used to all the new features, certain things just started lagging for me and some slowed to a crawl.

But then i got me a 4s and LOVED it hahaha :D

[/COLOR]I think apple will release os to support only for last 3 devices (now 3GS, 4, 4S ). so i don't think i will get an ios 6 update for my 3GS. ios6 may have advance functionality which may require additional hardware support. If it supports my 3GS, i will not pay for that. I try to jailbreak it. :)

And you need to think the iPhone 4 has to drive 4 times the amount af pixels, so yes, in terms of performance they are kind of equal.

Apple still sells the 3GS which is why it will likely get iOS6, whether it will be the full thing or just a gimped version remains to be seen.

but it WILL get iOS6, you can mark that down.

They have iPhone 3GS 0$ - iPhone 4 $99 - iPhone 4S $199 all these runs iOS 5.

This year it will look like this iPhone 4 $0 - iPhone 4S $99 - iPhone 5 $199

All of the these will run iOS 6. The iPhone 3GS is not getting ios 6

my 3GS compared to the ladies' 4 is like comparing night and day.

I normally have to wait over 10 seconds for the music player to start working (even when it was already in the background). Then another 10 seconds to change the song (these numbers are not exaggerated).

The 3GS is far far behind the 4, there is no question about it. iOS 6 won't support the 3GS, a 3 year old phone. Just like what they did with iOS 5 and iPhone 3G. Besides, iOS 5 is already slow enough on the 3GS, I fear 6 would only make it slower like others have said :)

I expect the upgrade to be free.

But you will pay in terms of performance or obsolesce.

3GS will get it for the same reasons as above it's still being sold so it'll be replaced by the 4 but will get ios 6 to kill it off in the usual apple fashion
