There is no way Apple is going to ask 3gs owners to pay for iOS 6. The reason iPod users were charged was due to some accounting differences in the way devices were classified.

That said, I don't think 3gs will get iOS6. iOS5 already chugs and the 3gs will be replaced by the iPhone 4 as the entry level iPhone.

Apple still sells the 3GS which is why it will likely get iOS6, whether it will be the full thing or just a gimped version remains to be seen.

but it WILL get iOS6, you can mark that down.

I really wouldn't bank on the fact you can still buy a 3GS brand new meaning you will get iOS6.

There are lower-end Android handsets being sold today without ICS and that won't ever get an ICS update. There is no reason why Apple wouldn't follow the same system with the 3GS/iOS6 which is effectively their "lower-end" model.

3GS and 4 are the same hardware. They have the same architecture, ARM Cortex-A8, the same CPU, the same GPU, the only differences are 200MHz in CPU speed and twice the RAM

Nice of you to be the voice of the whole consumer market.

Hmm 3GS has a crappy screen vs the 4.

The lesser screen gives the 3Gs better graphical performance. Both devices have the same GPU. When the same GPU is driving two different resolutions, the smaller will be faster.

I think iOS 6 will support the iPhone 3GS because I'm almost certain that the iPhone 4 will be supported. The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS are practically the same in terms of hardware. There are some slight differences but nothing major.

But I don't think they will ask a fee for the upgrade.

3GS has 256MB of RAM and a 600Mhz processor
iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM and an 800Mhz Processor.

I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but that extra RAM is crucial. The 3G had 128MB of RAM and a 400Mhz processor.

400MHz AND a completely different, older architecture. If 3GS had 400MHz it's still be much faster than 3G.

3GS and 4 though, share the same architecture.

They're both ARM CPUs. They are a different kind of ARM though. Much like there's a 7400 and a 7448 PowerPC G4 or a Pentium 2 and a Pentium 3.

I think 3GS gets an update.

Why ?
iPad 1 = iPod Touch 4G or iPod Touch 3G(32 GB/64 GB) = iPhone 3GS = 256 MB RAM.

All have same performance and why would apple leave out iPad 1 Users ? I mean iPad is an expensive one ($499 Vs $199 iPod Touch) and i am sure they will support it.

A4 on iPad 1 is 25% faster than the one present on iPhone 4/iPod Touch.

So i definitely think considering RAM theory , i think they will upgrade older devices but wont give exclusive features.

Example :
1.iOS 5 has Integrated Siri in 4S and Dictation on iPad 3 but not in iPad and iPod Touches.

2.Location based reminders won't work in iOS 5 of iPod Touch and iPad.

3.Facetime over 3G not available for Wifi devices (iPad/iPod Touch and 3GS has no front camera but has 3G , so may be available but faces cant be seen directly face-to-face)

Conclusion :
All will be upgraded for sure but not all features supported by all.

Some Things which must be considered :
Apple apps like iWork , Garageband will be upgraded so that they need latest iOS , so who are using Apple apps on iPad 1 need to upgrade for sure (iWork was introdudec along with iPad 1) to get latest versions working.Currently all apple's app need iOS 5 as requirement.

But most 3rd party apps work like a charm.
Apps like Cut the Rope even work on iOS 3.0 (it is one of the only popular app which is updated constantly and supported by iOS 3.0 onwards).
