Wow, I didn't know that. When I first signed up for Sprint, it gave me the option for free to make my new number my voice number but I opted out because I already had a Google voice number for over 3 years. Didn't want to change it since most if not all my business contacts have that number.

Maybe they have a deal with Sprint and Sprint paid for it, but I get hit up with the "pay 20$ through Google Wallet".

Actually, I didn't even know you could do that. Interesting. One time fee? Might be worth it considering that's how much a single month's text can be.

$20 bucks for free SMS forever.

Yep, it's a one time fee. Just check to make sure your number can be ported, I can even give you the link if you can't find it through Google. :p

Did they move the placement of the exclamation point in the Kit Kat Google keyboard? I don't remember it being on the right side, I thought it was on the left. Maybe I'm misremembering.

They did. I'm not a big fan of the new location either.

You can long press the period and the "!" is to the left, which is nice. And in Advance Settings, you can shorten the long press. I do it that way now when I want to sound like I'm shouting! Yeah!!

Yeah I know, but I don't use 3rd party apps for SMS so wouldn't Hangouts replace the stock SMS all on my GS4?

Your missing out not using 3rd party apps for SMS. Textra and Hancent are two really good SMS apps.

Unless your a T-Mobile user. I think unlimited texting is a built in part of all their plans......which are cheaper than anyone elses anyways.

The placement makes no sense. No idea what they were thinking. But the swipe is pretty accurate, I like that.

Enjoying it so far as my new default SMS app on my S4. The Location Sharing is freakin brilliant.

One thing though - they claim you can even MMS animated .gifs. I tried sending one to my wife (iPhone 5) and it simply showed up as a standard .jpg

If she isn't on the 4.4 version of the app, I don't think it will show as a gif.

Oh ok, I was just assuming that you could send an animated .gif via MMS to ANYONE and they'd be able to view it as an animated .gif on any device (iMessage / Messages app included). Booooo. That's kind of how Google worded it when I was reading about Hangouts 2.0 Would've been cool :)

Why do you need a notification badge on the app icon, if the notification is in the status bar and in your notification center (until you swipe it away)?

I may have texts from more than 1 person and the badge will at least tell me how many texts i have. It wont in the status bar and i have to go to the notification center. I have the text icon on my dock so it would be nice to have a badge like Textra and Handcent do.
It also doesnt pop up a window with the notification like those other two do. If it did the pop up, i could live without the badge because the popup gives me the texts from all and i can thumb thru them.

Ah, gotcha. I am getting use to vanilla Android again. The ROM's I have been on all had the number badge on the notification icon in the status tray, as well as using Halo (which I wish Google would have stolen and incorporated! Halo is an awesome feature).

That notification in your status bar/notification center doesn't go away when you visit the app from your homescreen. Pretty much every other app in Android will get rid of their alert in your notification center/status bar as long as you visit the app and view whatever the alert was for. However, Hangouts, in order to lose the alert in your status bar/notification center, you have to go thru the notification center. Really annoying.

Are you on 4.4? I just checked and when you go into the Hangouts app, the notification in the status bar does go away. No need to drop the notification tray down.

I'm not on 4.4, just using Hangouts 2.0 and I'm not getting that. If I have a new unread text waiting for me, my alerts in my NC won't disappear if I visit the app and read the texts. It's weird, I dunno why it's doing it.

I would hazard a guess and say that rich notifications in 4.4 apps are not playing well with the 4.3 OS. Just a guess though.
I can confirm that the notification icon for Hangouts does go away when you enter the app on 4.4 though. :D
