but do we know its a software issue? if so i just drop wifi and wait

Not completely sure if it is software related or not. I am thinking that it is.
Apple is going to do some testing with me tomorrow on my machine and hoping to find something out. For now my suggestion is to go ethernet cable for now and stay off WiFi. That maybe the temporary solution for now.

One thing that the Corporate Executive Relations Person from Apple Headquarters told me is that the fix may come out before the OS/X update 10.5.7 which is interesting.

I wonder why it hasn't come out already. Just two weeks ago, AppleInsider was saying how "imminent" it was due.

I still have not had any freezing. I use ethernet, but have tested on WiFi for about 24 hours. If this problem was software wouldn't every iMac be effected the same way?

Really hope the fix is released soon for everyone. I'm yet to buy my new iMac but before I buy I'd like to see Apple squash this problem.

10.5.7 should be here any moment. /me running to the Apple Store soon :)

FWIW; since adjusting my fan speed using ifancontrol; i have not had a crash *fingers crossed* in well over 30 hrs now

I'm positive it is linked to cooling. My fan speeds are the same now (just woken from sleep) as they were when I was playing WoW on full settings and the top of the case was too hot to touch almost.

I doubt it. I had mine freeze while I was doing light graphics tablet work. Right now, it is not freezing (because I switched from WiFi to Ethernet) and the top of the case feels as hot as it did when it was freezing.

Has yours froze since you switched to ethernet and turned off WiFi? or rather how long has it been since you switched?

Same here, after receiving the iMac (4850 / 3.06) kept hanging. (using wifi, but also Gb/Lan) Up-ed my fanspeed to 1600 - 2200, not a single freeze.

(Software was smc fan speed or something, quite a few to find on the web)

Let me know if it works for you too.

If I recall correctly, here is the timeline:

Day 1: Got iMac in the evening and used it on WiFi. I had one freeze just before I went to bed by running the Apple Movie Trailer test for 10-20 mins.

Day 2: I had another freeze just running the iTunes visualizer, and another freeze when I was drawing on my tablet (no network activity). It was after these additional freezes I switched to using Ethernet. No more freezes, even after using iTunes Visualizer (w/ internet radio) for 3 hours.

Day 3: I was basically on the computer the whole day, doing everything from iTunes to downloading iWork Trial to playing 3D games. No freezes at all. I even watched a high bit-rate (10mbps!) HD movie without any problems.

Summary: 16hrs WiFI with light usage = 3 freezes. 36 hours on Ethernet with heavy usage = 0 freezes.

That just proves that your iMac doesn't want to be used for "pedestrian" applications. :)

Seriously though, I have had pretty much the same experience but it's been a little over a week now. 8-9 freezes with wifi doing random things and no freezes using ethernet and some intensive stuff.

Ok to catch you up to date. I emailed Tim Cook, the acting CEO of Apple while Steve Jobs is taking some time off. I got a phone call from his team. They had a High Level Tech Support Specialist contact me today and they gave me a program to capture my logs to trace why my freezes have been happening. They are putting a High Priority on it and I should know something within 24-48 hours. I will relay the findings here.

I did ask her a few questions regarding fan control, I see on this site that some of you are installing smc and other software and making your fans go faster to cool down the temperatures. She told me that it is not recommended that you do this, and that is because it will make your fan not last as long as it should for one thing. That alone is good enough for me. I did install istat to monitor some readings. She said that is ok, but they are not 100% accurate. But they will give you some idea of what is going on.

Also did you know that on your 2nd DVD install disk where applications is on there is a Hardware Test program. The instructions on how to use it is on the disk. You can try that if you like. Mine passed ok.

According to this Tech Support Specialist, the Apple Engineers do not have enough data yet and needs to collect as much as they can to figure out the program. So from that I think this will not be a quick fix. We are probably looking at least a month at the earliest to see a fix on this and maybe longer.

This of course is only my opinion and I could be way off. If you get a chance, call your Apple Tech support and tell them that you want to discuss with a High Level Tech Support Agent and give them your logs for the engineers to look over. The more logs they have to review the faster this fix will come. The program they use to capture the logs is called CaptureData81.

It will capture only the crash logs and make a DMG file in which you will upload to send by email back to the Support Agent. If you want a faster fix, then do this today. Contact Apple Support and tell them that you want the CaptureData81 program and that you want to give them your logs for the Apple Engineers to review. The more logs they have the faster we will get rid of these lockups. Hope this helps.

Sorry to repeat myself on these threads but I wanted to make sure more people see this and take action so we can get the fix faster.
