the GPS lock will work similar regardless of Nav app ... many have confirmed that TomTom's lock is quick and holds well.

don't forget about Navigon - most report the best overall user interface, good routing and strong features ... they will discount soon; they've always been lower priced than TomTom ... and they offer fixed price traffic (from INRIX, see free App for sample of traffic accuracy) ... and they are providing a free update w/in the next couple of days that includes Google Local Search which is by far the best POI database ... in comparison, TomTom charges $9.99/mo for live traffic, google search, and fuel (see TomTom Services) on their other devices

the one drawback is that on a iPhone 3G, Navigon is a bit laggy when using the menus; road navigation is fine but moving through app is slow ... supposedly this may improve w/ next version, but for now it can be slow

just providing you add'l info for your decision ... good luck

are you able to look at the route details while you are navigating using Navigon? friend has the app and we couldn't figure out how to look at the route details while navigating.

No, with Navigon there is no way to see the route you are taking, no list of turns, nothing. Considering Navigton was released before TomTom and Magellan, I can't believe they haven't updated that. I have been extremely disappointed with this lack of an extremely basic feature, and the fact that it is borderline unusable on an iphone 3G. The one time I was able to get Navigon to get me directions, I navigated to one of my contacts, and it took me 10 miles away. Turns out it routed me to the wrong zip code, not the zip code in my contacts. Had I had a list of turns to make, I would have known it was taking me somewhere else.

Is TomTom perfect? No, but it has gotten me where I need to be, every time. It's not as pretty as Navigon, but it does everything I need it to. It's caught up with features too, text to speech and lane guidance were missing at first, but no longer. I have played around with Google Maps for Android, and it is very cool, but the jury's out on when or if Apple will allow it on the iPhone for free. For $50, I think TomTom is a bargain. Other people have had good luck with Navigon, I'm sort of dumbfounded as to how poorly it's worked for me though.

List of turns is coming in Navigon 1.4 among other features.

As far as I can find, you can only view the list of turns during navigation! Unless somebody whos used it knows how to access it any other way?

That seems to be the case for those who have downloaded the UK version. I'm happy they finally brought this basic feature, not sure what took them so long. I am eager to try the google search, the POI database never worked well for me, and I would have to enter the city first to find something, unless there was an easier way to look for places that I missed. If this would work well, and they speed things up a lot so it's usable on a 3G, I may try it again. Still, I'm quite happy with TomTom.

What other option is there? ... don't you have to identify a destination and initiate a route before the app decides a list of turn-by-turns? What am I missing?

Also, what about under "More" and "Route" where you can plan and save multiple routes? ... does that part of the app provide list of turn-by-turn?

Well, as say TT does, enter your route and you instantly can get a text summary of the route. With Navigon you have to start navigation then route around the menus to find the option. Just could be better in my opinion!
