Aha!

One solution to your problem would be to get the new ear phones which have the remote control in the cable.

This was Apple's plan all along! :p

I was thinking of getting a new 16GB, but now not so sure. Will have to wait and see if anything gets done.

I understand the frustration of those who bought the Nano 4th gen and have this very ANNOYING feature eating away at the battery life....

Am kinda relieved I did not buy mine and the one I want to give to someone...
The reason I did not buy Gen 3 is because it seemed too compact and not user friendly.....if something is eating away at my battery life and I have to hassle too much for it not to...then it defeats the object of listening to music "hassle free"...

All those geniuses at Apple should've tested this and made it an option instead of a constant feature.......they were WAY to eager to show off to gadget addicts....

I'm holding my money in my pocket till they do something about this in some way....

I have this EXACT same complaint  Please, everyone that is annoyed by this problem, send Apple feedback asking them to add a menu option for disabling Cover Flow when the nano is rotated (go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodnano.html). I was waiting for the bus today and was holding the nano in my pocket and I had to pull it out every couple minutes to change the volume; it's driving me crazy!

Send Apple feedback! Hopefully they'll change it if enough people write in.

Stongly recommend everyone does this. Send Apple your feedback and hopefully get an option to turn off the Accelerometer within the new Ipod Nano's settings.

I too had this problem. I went to the Apple Store ready to return my Nano (4G) + Armband setup, but then they informed me that the iPod Touch has a built-in Nike sensor, and thats what I was really aiming for. They waived the restocking fee for me since I couldn't help with the accelerometer dilemma. So far I'm loving not having a transponder stick out of my iPod.

well to stop battery from being wasted

There is a thing called a hold switch. You switch it and voila no more accelerometer problem. You should get some headphones with an inline volume control.

till you get the option of turning off the accelometer another way of not wasting battery would be to change your backlight to nothing or real dim,and the timer to a couple of seconds..I keep mine off as I usually shuffle songs

thank you all for these posts, just talked myself out of buying one until there is an update or just sticking with my 2G and my mom will be tracking down a 3G for her car. Had no idea!

Me too... Sounds like a heck of a production to run a 4G Nano:). I'll wait for a while.

Holy crap

I hate the damn accelerometer. I sent feedback to Apple, but I have this sinking feeling that it will fall on deaf ears.

The most irritating part about it is that the Nano defaults to coverflow when it is upside down... EXACTLY the orientation that it is in when it's clipped to your waist. As such, attempting to change the volume simply scrolls through albums. I hate this feature and I will forever hate my 4G Nano unless they offer a fix ASAP. I was so happy to finally have 16GB... and they ruined it with this stupid feature.

That means that you'd need to switch the hold switch every time you wanted to skip a song, or change the volume - provided you don't buy the volume control headphones. There's no way I'm going to buy Apple's headphones JUST so I can play with the volume of my iPod. Besides, I already purchased $140 headphones for it about a month ago. I'd rather not sacrifice sound quality just so I can change volume when the issue shouldn't exist in the first place.

^You're exactly right!

I returned my 16GB Nano because of this dumb accelerometer problem. HEY APPLE, YOU JUST LOST $200! YOU BETTER RELEASE AN UPDATE SOON!
Coverflow is useless on a Nano. And if I want landscape mode for watching videos I'd rather just CLICK the option on, not be forced to use the accelerometer. Apple, you're stupid.

Please

Please... everyone... I must reiterate: Scroll back in this thread and send feedback to Apple on this matter. I hate my 4G every day because of the stupid cover flow, but it has the potential to be great without this hellish feature.

PLEASE SEND APPLE FEEDBACK.

Thank you. :)

Yep, I sent them feedback after you first posted the link. Thanks :)

So did I. Not so bad for listening to music but when listening to a language course and you want to keep going back a few seconds without having to think about what you're doing it's a real pain.

I was considering buying the new nano (would be my first), but seeing this has really put me off. If I can't discretely change the volume without pulling the unit out and reorienting it every time, it's impractical to get one.

I sent Apple feedback on this issue, telling them I won't purchase the nano as-is, and no other models suit me. FWIW, you don't have to actually have an iPod to leave feedback.

Thanks to all who take time to contribute here. You saved me some bucks and grief.

worst ipod ever
can i get a witness?

You're not getting one from me. I reckon it's the best one they've made, although I do agree that coverflow should be an optional feature.

If they made a remote in which I could change the volume and skip forwards and backwards (a la FM Radio Reciever for the 5th Gen iPod), I'd get one.

This is assuming that this would be a simple software/firmware fix by Apple. Do most people here think it is?

Oh dear god. On my $2 Sandisk Shaker you needed to press a button to activate the shake-to-shuffle feature. I thought FOR SURE Apple would at least have that much insight.

You nailed it on the head. I have to grab the Nano, flip it over, and wait for it to detect the new setting before I can change the volume or maneuver within a song. It's terrible.

To ask the question that somebody else alluded to... COULD this be an easy software fix? I'm not tech savvy enough to say.

I'm hoping that when the first firmware update for the 4G nano comes out we see a configuration setting to turn on and off the accelerometer mode. In short, no sale until they fix this problem.

Yeah, you're lucky you didn't buy one yet. It is maddening. I'm almost thinking about throwing another $200 at a 16GB Zune because of this. Dammit.
