Hey guys, i totally love my iphone, but i have 1 regret. That i got the 4GB instead of the 8GB. Do you think apple will waive the restocking fee if i go in and return the phone to "upgrade" to the 8GB ? Also, will activating it be as easy as swapping SIM cards ?

My guess is 'Yes' on the restocking fee, since there is nothing actually wrong with it except that you want more space and switching it over will probably be easy.
LOL, probably not. I guess what i'll do is get the 8GB when it's available and give the 4GB to my wife
All lot of the people in line on Friday at my local ATT store (including myself) bought 4gigs and ordered 8 at the same time, since the 8's ran out within 5 minutes. My 8gig is arriving tomorrow, and I will be returning the 4 to the store, happy to pay the $50 restocking fee for a week of Iphone rental.

I bought a 4GB on Monday, figuring I could cancel my order for the 8GB with AT&T -- but then they told me I couldn't cancel (even though it hadn't shipped at the time). So I'm getting an 8GB via FedEx today. I figure....I'll switch and keep the 8GB.
Is swapping the SIM cards all I should do? I shouldn't hook up the new one and activate it that way? What do I do with all the crap that's sync'd to my 4GB?

Just switching the SIM card will not activate the phone. You will need to go through itunes again and there will be a new activation option - somethign along the lines of use existing number to resync iphone. doesnt take very long and will transfer everything to your new phone - including previous sent sms messages and bookmarks/favorites from other applications.
That doesn't seem right since they said they could give you a loner iPhone if yours had to go in for service. In that case all they would probably do would be to swap the SIM card.
I feel your pain a little bit. The AT&T store told me there IS a restocking fee since I opened it. They also said there's no way around the fee since Apple is being very strict with them and how they handle anything iPhone related. So, I guess I have 1 week to decide if its worth $150 to upgrade...

It's only a no-brainer if you mean someone who has "no brains."
4GB of NAND flash is like $30, and 8GB is like $30 more! (Probably less with bulk discounts.) Why is it $100 more expensive?! Why is it worth a $50 restocking fee?
Ridiculous, IMHO.
That said, I'll probably still get the 8... just in case. I'll get a big drive on my next MBP.
Thank you! Finally someone with some sense. 4GB of flash is not worth $100, even when bumping 4GB to 8GB. Maybe a third of that or LESS, not factoring in bulk discounts.

You will pay a 10% fee up to 14 days, after that you will not be able to return it unless it's defective. I went for the 8G just because I figured spending an extra $100 would be better then being disappointed,
I changed the 4Gb to 8Gb - had to pay the restocking fee they repeated like 50 times I'd have to pay the restocking fee - like they had to remind themselves - or thought I was creazy to actually accept to pay 50 bucks.
Had an argument with them - they say 10% restocking fee, but charged me $50 even, instead of $49.90.
They looked at me as if i was creazy - I told them i was already paying too huge a price for my impatience, to want to loose an additional 10 cents told them my bank charges my $35 if i go overdraft of 10 cents (also pointed that, if out of all these new customers they had at least 100 000 people who returned their phone, 10 cents would becomes $10000 which is not bad for a week end ....)
Fight for your 10 cents!!!!!! - but exchanging the 4 for the 8 is possible and you DO NOT need to change the SIM - Itunes activates the 8Gb, deactivates the 4Gb, syncs everything the same way your 4 was - and off you go - changing the phone took me 5 minutes ---- very easy
oh - and 4 Gb more MAKES a difference it is clear that with the iphone , you actually HAVE to manage your library - while walking around with 250Gb of music doensn't make much sense, movie + podcasts + a few songs DOES take a big amount of space and 4Gb os not enough for a trip, for example. 8Gb gives you enough room to have some entertainment ready while on a plane, etc.

Or you're 25% of the way towards buying the next generation with 16GB when it's released in 9-12 months.
If the rumored software upgrades to the iphone happen those with 4 gigs will be at an extreme disadvantage.
Well, I swapped my 4GB out for the 8GB that AT&T sent me. It was fairly easy/painless...now let's see that AT&T doesn't start billing me for service on two phones.
