I use to say it's worth it to use as a Blu-Ray player and that was it. Then I discovered that they do not support internally decoding DTS HD Master Audio or even shoot out as PCM to a Receiver that can decode DTS HD Master Audio. I got a lot of Fox Blu-Ray Movies that I was looking forward to listen in DTS HD Master Audio. Which by the way blows Dolby TrueHD out the water! :D

I can appreciate your dislike of the fact that that feature is missing. I will say it is far from a waste of money. As of Tuesday (fw 2.20) it became one of the first Profile 2.0 blu-ray players on the market. And as a media device it does quite nicely. And surfing the web using a keyboard and mouse on it is quite enjoyable as well. Short of the video rental it's a better device than the Apple TV. And using Nullriver's Medialink on the Mac it accomplishes the same tasks. And to add to that not many standalone blu-ray players support the DTS-HD right now either. You have to get into a serious player before they do.

Yeah watch the next 5 years and comeback to this and say I was right! ;)

I don't think your all that off the mark, but it seems impracticle cost wise for a mini. I wasn't aware the high speed SSD's were out yet. The current technology is going to get blown away in the next 6-9 months in terms of both read and write performance. I fully expect Intel to validate the market. They wouldn't be in it for low returns though. They can put all those old fabrication plants to work churning these things out.

I've been using SSD's in the corporate environment for a number of years now (at least 15). The payback really isn't there for most applications. I didn't really see the point of using one on the desktop / laptop until you talk about power savings for batteries. The rotating disk market has been more or less keeping up all this time.

ONLY thing is I'm shocked that I would be the first. I thought with all of the MacManiacs somebody would have done this already. Times must be really tight!

I would check the xlr8yourmac forums. That's where you see most of the Hard Core upgraders among other places.

Do we really need to figure out his reasoning of installing an SSD drive into a mini? His signature indicates he is a Monster Cable believer. That is all we need to know.

Yeah and your point? I been hearing regular cables then Monster with more insulation and more material for better signal transfer. I been using Monster Cable for 16 years now. I will be that customer. It just I don't like Bose that's the brand that brainwash people into spending $2,000 on a system whereas a $500 on system can do the same job. I mean lot of my friends come to my house and hear the Mac Mini on the Logitech Z-5500 using Monster Cable Optical Cable. They was impressed. I mean I can hear my iTunes purchase with lot more detail one Apple audio output on their products is mind boggling and then Logitech I feel make some damn good speakers. I only had X-230 and then when I get the chance got the Z-5500 for $218 from Buy.com. I'm happy with my purchases because of research and product testing. :D

If you want to really max out your mini, you could always check out this thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/297040/) I started a while back. The guys over at 123macmini (http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14446&start=90) have managed to get a couple of RAID cards working in the mini using a similar technique. Surely, RAID is faster then any SSD!

What???
Hell NO! I'm not doing that! I'm put a 128GB SSD and that's it anything extra then I do a Western Digital 2TB External Hard Drive. :D

Why all the hating ? This guy is trying to max out his mac, its his money. If i had the money i'd do the same thing. :apple:

No Crap all I see is PowerPC processors in your line of Macs. :D

OP, I like your sense of humor (in your responses). Don't worry, I have no intentions of questioning your budget or reasoning, hehe. I'd love to see how this turns out (post some benchmarks or something). I'm waiting for an update to get a mini, and am mainly attracted to the form factor. It will be a secondary Mac system, so I doubt I'll be following in your footsteps, but I still find this interesting. And now I'm off to play solitaire on my new Alienware laptop. :p ;)

the c2d will support 3.something gigs, like the last generation c2d white imacs. apple will only support 2gigs. then again, apple doesn't support solid state drives in the mac mini, either.
Is it best to put in one 1Gig stick, and one 2Gig stick then? It seems a waste putting in two 2Gig ones: unless they have to be paired in some way...?

I think having matched (paired) ram sets (even two 2gig's on a system that will only utilize 3.3gigs) allows you to reap certain benefits over having a 1gig and 2gig ram chip. How much of a difference this makes in theory vs. day to day usage is not something I'm certain of, but I did the same (4gigs) in my MBP 2.33 ghz. Even if the boost is purely psychological, I'm happy with the results. :)

I got Kingston 4GB Kit (two 2GB PC2-5300) online at www.frys.com they was $72.99 but I got mine locally for $79.99. The system shows 4GB plus I get 128-bit memory addressing. This better to have to equal matching pairs then the odd couple. The system is way faster plus it definitely more responsive. Which brought me to the idea since my memory is max out why not complete it with Solid State Drive! :D

Agreed. For goodness sakes, he's asking for advice on an SSD for his mac mini, and instead of any advice, he gets analyzed/criticized to death.

Criminey, I want an SSD for my Mini as well ... I'm just not sure what's out there and would love some specific examples of what drives would fit/work in the mini.

So I go to this thread and discover nothing but a bunch of people cracking on this guy for asking the question. :(

the responses in this thread (like the one above) are f---ked.

How about we analyze the way everyone here uses their computer, and the purchasing choices they make and then make fun of them if we think they are silly.

That would be endless fun.

BTW, sorry about the buzz kill, but I just think people are being ******s here.

Wow, Blast from the Past!

robeddie, now I hope this hasn't been bothering you for a WHOLE YEAR! :D

Just kidding. I would have not seen this thread, and would have missed out on a good laugh about the monster cables.

Ok, that is funny. I hadn't even noticed till now that these were comments from way back in 2008. I was just thinking '2009'.

That said, I had just noticed this thread, and am in the thinking stage myself about getting an SSD for my '2009' mac mini.

I sleep now.

how to upgrade a HD in a 2009 Mac Mini. It even comes complete with a cheesy, 1980s style rock soundtrack that's a cunning ad for the company who made the video
