I am in Florida at the moment (on holiday from Scotland) and hoped to pick up a base 13" with the 4gb upgrade at a retail store - so far I have been to a couple of retail stores around Naples and they stock 2gb models an the 4gb ultimate - i am travelling around Florida and just wondered if the bigger stores were more likely to stock the 4gb base config? or should I just go for the 2gb - It is my sole machine and I mainly use it for office/Internet with occasional light use of adobe cs4 and also handbrake.
cheers
Tim

I have the base 13" MBA with 4GB - Most stores dont carry it - so i ordered it via 2 day delivery from Macmall.com - Could'nt have been happier.

If you can - follow that route.

That is not true, you can get the 4GB with different processor's and HDD's.

Where at? Becuase I haven't seen them and I've been to just about every retail store that carries Mac's. Not only that, but every single one said "no, you've got to order that" when I told them the specs I wanted which were 13" 4GB ram 128GB SSD and base processor model.

Thats exactly the one i have - as they told you - most stores dont keep that in ready stock and its usually built to order - however Macmall.com usually carries a stock of it and you may also try micro center stores (http://www.microcenter.com) - they sometimes carry it.

Both are authorized retailers

Does anybody thing Best buy will ever carry them? I strongly prefer to buy from there because I have a CC with them (rewards points!).

BB was the first place I went to to get mine because I had a $300 GC. They only had 2GB models at the location I went to. No 4GB ones, not even ultimate.

I don't think Best Buy will carry the 4gig ram option anytime soon. I think maybe the next update that I think Apple will get rid of the 2gig. I have to say I have had all four models....the 11" 2gig ram, 128 SSD. and the ultimate 11". The extra ram and just a bit faster really made a difference, then I had the 13" 2gig ram and 256 drive....then I returned it for the ultimate. NIGHT AND DAY between the two machines! I wouldn't recommend buying a machine with 2gig of ram. Always go for the 4 at this time. Hope that helps....good luck.

That sucks, dealbreaker for me.

I live right next to DE and could easily go there and save $100 in taxes at BB.

Do you think there's any chance of them getting 4 GB models later? Has this happened with previous models?

a third party retailer (The Mac Store) told me that had a couple 4GB variations in stock recently. Mac Mall seems to have them, so there are some in the channel.

It depends on the store.
I called the 5th ave store in NY and they had a pretty good selection of configurations. Other stores only had the base models.

Here are all the configurations available:

you are wrong...

I bet the apple stores dont stock much other than base models is because people who want 4GB may also want other custom changes....they dont want to end up with thousands of higher level customs in store stock rooms considering how often apple seems to come out with improved revisions. Thats my guess.

thanks for the replys - just called the Miami store to ask if they had base spec with 4gb and was told that they can upgrade to 4gb in store?!? I asked the question again just to be sure and he was adamant they can which contradicts everything I have been told so far.....

The guy is wrong. He's just telling you that to physically get you in the store to buy what they have in stock.

Yes...these are the available configurations...just not at an apple store.

You have posted something from macmall or the like. So what.

As of now, always subject to change, the only 4 gb models available at an apples store are the so called ultimate configs.

it is not the same for all apple stores.
each store stocks different quantities of each configuration.

I called a few stores in my area and they confirmed for the macbook air that they stock some of the custom configurations in the store but not all stores will have them. this was not the case with other mac computers, it seems like the air is a special case.

When I called one of my local apple stores they said the same thing. When I went there however it was another matter. The only 4GB model they had were the ultimate. Not saying that will apply to you, just making a point that just because they "said" that doesn't mean it's true until you've actually verified it yourself.

Miami is really far from Naples (if that is where you are right now).
I wouldn't drive all the way to Miami to get the Air, unless you were planning on driving down to Miami anyways.

Finally bought my MBA from Naples and I settled for the 2gb because I could not justify the cost of the Ultimate and given the work I do 2gb should be fine - it feels pretty quick! Now after using it for a few days I am thinking that I should have got the 11.6 ultimate (I have spent ages in the store and have read all the 13v11 threads on here)

Just a quick question - if I wanted to swap it for a 11.6 - can this be done at any Apple Retail store or do I have to return to the same store (I am traveling around) - I still have the box and the receipt.
