Just got a new iPad Pro today. How do I get HDR movies and is there a way to check if it’s playing with HDR on?

Go to films section in iTunes, tap on the film you want to buy, if it supports HDR it was say HDR in the same place where it says things like HD, it may also say Dolby Vision that is also HDR. I’m guessing you have brought the iPad Pro 2017? Only they support it.

iPad Pros and Air 2 only have a screen resolution of 264ppi. I think that equal to 720i screen resolution. iPhones and iPad Minis have 326ppi for 720p screen resolution. The iPhone Plus has 401ppi and is 1080p or HD however. None of the above can show 4K images or video in true 4K!

The iPads have a resolution greater than 1080p but not up to 4K.

Everyone realizes that HDR is not exclusive to 4K content, right? It is truly awesome you can watch movies with HDR on the new iPad Pro, but they are NOT 4K. So by all means, make a list of movies with HDR, but please do not claim they are shown in 4K on the ipad because they aren’t. If you are watching a movie that has 4K resolution, you will be watching at a resoltion below 4K as the 10.5” iPad Pro does not have a 4K screen.

Watching movies or shows on the new iPP will be higher res. than 2k, but not full UHD 4K.
The iPP 12.9” is 3k so when you watch movies it will be a smidge clearer than traditional 2k (1080p) displays, but hardly noticeable.
The same would actually be the case for 4K as it’s the pixel count, P3, and HDR that makes 4K stand out most. Since iPads and iOS devices have smaller more compact pixels with HDR and P3 there wouldn’t be a huge difference when watching movies on a 3K iPad vs a 4K iPad.
*even when put side by side not much difference would be seen.

The iPP can play videos at 1440p with HDR and P3.
In the end you miss out on a few pixels but since the iPP is so small it’s not something so noticeable even when put side by side to a 55” 4K tv. In fact, the pixels are sharper on smaller phones or tablet displays.

Let me go back... I did a few different things to figure this out.

So, it definitely does support DolbyVision right now. This is the iPad 10.5 on iOS 11.1 (newest beta). Here's the different. You have to DOWNLOAD the 4k/HDR movies, not stream them. Putting Pacific Rim side by side with my 10.5 and Air 2, like for like settings, the 10.5 really shines over the Air 2. So, it does support HDR10/DolbyV. I stand corrected by correcting myself lol. It doesn't do HDR streaming though at this point.

This is using the TV app and downloading Pacific Rim and streaming it from iTunes.
