My 5,1 Mac Pro only came with one hard drive sled which was fine for a while, but I'm looking to add additional drives. 3,1; 2,1; 1,1 HDD sleds seem to be easier to find and cheaper. Would they fit in my 5,1? They look similar but I'm not sure.

They are longer. Also if you put in the older sleds they don't slide in all the way and you can't put the side cover back on.

Did you find an alternative to the factory fitted drive sleds?

OWC make drive sleds. Here's one for SSDs.

I like these actually! I have a Sabrent mounting bracket that I use for an SSD in my 4,1 but this seems like a much better solution for people who are missing some drive sleds.

I also like the blue color to help distinguish HDD vs SSD in your unit.
