Is it stupid that the Power button of your TV is nearly impossible to find or reach?
my remote turns my tv on and off. I basically never need to touch the remote.

sometimes a mini needs to be powered off and it is frozen so you pull the plug. and you need to push the button to start it back up. 🆙

in that case if you programmed correctly when you plug it back in it will turn on.

if you shut the mini off with a mouse and software you do need to push the button on if once again you did not program it to power on with a keyboard or mouse touch.

I have not done this in years so I am not sure you can still program it to turn on with a mouse click.

it is pretty much a zero issue.

my issue is what m4 to buy.

I really want to know if I can boot the m4 using my external samsung t9.

i do it with my

m2
m1
2018 intel.

if it boots using an external ssd I could keep the smallest internal ssd and boost ram

the base m4 would be 539+180 or 719 for 24gb ram and boot it with an external 2tb samsung t9

??? The power button on my TV is in an obvious position just under the red standby LED - unobtrusive but easily accessible and you certainly don't have to lift up the corner of the TV to press it!

(Which is good because the remote on my TV is badly designed - instead of just putting a round button with the usual "on/off" symbol printed on it they've actually made a rubber button in the shape of the on-off symbol which is uncomfortable to press, doesn't reliably activate the underlying switch and only works 1 out of 3 times...)

You know, it is possible to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe Apple made a dumb decision with the power button and could have done better, but that it doesn't completely ruin an otherwise OK design - rather than coming up with ridiculous rationalisations. I don't think anybody is claiming this as a total deal breaker - it's just that Apple could have done better. The teardowns show that the button is on a wire and could have been located anyway - Apple have just saved a few cents (which they certainly won't be passing on to us) by not incorporating it into the aluminium case.

they seem to busy to post...

like to know how accurate this poll is given results show 25% are so upset they are returning the new machines... yet almost every comment is "press it once". more manufacturer outrage it would seem... ;)

sure a side or top placement would have been better but honestly if that's all you can complain about they did a great job of the redesign.
I’m pretty sure all or most of us that picked that last option read it as sarcasm…

So I will be buying one once they are available locally, and that switch location is idiotic. I've been turning my computers off at night since 1995. My youngest is a 2011MBP and it's still going strong. So obviously turning on and off does not shorten their life.

Any warnings on the box about mounting it upside down or on its edge???

The only time it was a pain in the neck for was having to press it twice to set up the Touch ID on the Magic Keyboard but that’s only because of where it‘s placed. Not lost any sleep over it and I’m pretty sure i won’t either.
Fantastic machine though (base model)

Old problematic drives should not be in anyone's life when cheap/fast/reliable modern drives are ubiquitous.
Heh. It turns out they were just really, really, really slow, probably because they were nearly full (and old hard drives). Once they were formatted, they were fine. So, I just filled them up again with backups and will store them as secondary backups.

:D

This is actually an OEM Apple Hitachi hard drive, that was harvested from a defective 2009 Core i7 iMac 27". After repeated attempts to fix it, Apple gave up and just removed the hard drive and handed it to me, and then got me a new 2010 Core i7 iMac 27".

BTW, when I started the file copy, it said it would take "About a day" but then it settled down to "only" about 12 hours.

No prob, but they could have put it in the bottom without requiring you to pick it up by making the gap a little wider between the button and the surface.

I do turn off my computers every evening.

The solution for the power button placement on the mini was to place a 4" coaster under it. Not only does it make it easy to reach under and press the power button, but since the coaster can barely be seen from a sitting position, it makes the mini look like it's floating. It actually looks quite nice.

I also have a Mac Studio and find the button on the back, with its minimal indent, often not quite so fluid to press. Actually prefer the mini with the coaster for ease of startup.

I have to unplug my TV to turn it off, if I can't find the remote.

I mean power-off your TV using the remote control is similar to putting your computer to sleep.
Pressing the keyboard will wake the computer.
Pressing any button on the remote control will wake the TV.
There is a power button or switch on the TV to completely power it off. Many TVs place this button on its back, or somewhere not easy to reach or find.
My point was: The power button on the Mac Mini is just like the one on the TV. They are rarely used.

The power button is less annoying than macbook ones.

Want to clean the thing when it's turned off? Press any key and it powers up.

Want to open the lid when it's turned off? Powers up.

Glance at it from across the room? Powers up.

.... now the mac mini ...

Want to clean the thing when it's turned off? Fine!

Want to open the lid when it's turned off? It doesn't have one!

Glance at it from across the room? Stays off.

Agree completely. The Mini power button is a non-issue for me. The Macbook turning on whenever the lid is opened drives me bonkers. I can't understand why Apple won't allow the user to control lid function via settings. Geez...even Windows does that.

Interestingly, this is the exact SSD enclosure I use.

Having just had to drive a 90 minute round trip to help a new Mac mini M4 owner (mid 80s) turn on their Mac mini... I get a lot of people don't turn their Macs off, but putting the power button on the front of the Mini would have made so much more sense. Holding patience while trying to describe over the phone how to turn the Mac on and then having to abandon ship and waste 90 minutes is just ridiculous because Apple made a poor design decision.

Meh. While I'm not a huge fan of the location of the power button, trying to blame Apple for this is really, really reaching.
