They sell 30GB and 80GB HDDs on ifixit for the iPod 5G. I'd fix the thing and keep using it. They're pretty easy to get open, and with the Hard Disk, all you have to do is unplug the old and plug in the new. Give it a shot!

I have the 5.5g 80gb in black and that thing is still going strong about 4 years later, and it is still in decent condition! Probably one of the better iPods Apple has produced

5gen 30gb Black reporting in!

Needless to say, but still worth it to mention, this iPod is a tank!

I bought mine off of a seller on craigslist (lightly used, but still brand spanking new + accessories for a great deal) back in January of 2006. I remember the day, too....

Anyways, this thing has been through so much with me.
- It's lasted my whole college career, keeping me up during all day-all night study sessions, kept me company walking in between classes, and kept me sane in boring lectures.
- I skateboard with the iPod in my back pocket. It's given jumping down stairs, grinding rails and ledges, and cruising the streets its own theme song. As a skateboarder, falling is part of the game, and I've fallen on it many times and it still allowed me to play a tune to dust myself off with. One time, I bailed while grinding a ledge and landed completely ass first on the corner of the ledge, straight onto the iPod.............it still worked.
- It's made long drives much more entertaining. I was so psyched when I found out that my car had an auxillary jack to hook my iPod to.
- Over the 4 years and some change with this iPod, my older brother went through many iPods. I can't count on my fingers how many times he's had to get a new iPod or rather how many times he's had to go iPod-less.

It started showing it's age, not too long ago, though. I noticed the screen light was a bit dimmer than it once was. The screen was starting to show many broken pixels. The plastic housing was starting to separate from the aluminum housing (I'm not sure of the correct terms). Just of yesterday, the headphone jack stopped working....

I'm looking to try and fix it (the jack at least), but, sad to say, I am considering the option of buying a new iPod. :(

Still have my 2005 5th Gen 60g white Ipod in pristine condition. One of Apple's best devices indeed. I use my Iphone G3s Ipod app, but not the same. Am in need of a new battery and if anyone knows where to purchase it online (USA) I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

still in love with my 5.5gen 80Gb model, got it in a job lot with a macbook and an apple ipod hifi, which i still use to this day, it's great!

The pod goes with me everywhere even tho i have my iphone, at 80gb it has all my music on not just my iphone playlist ;-)

Buy a replacement headphone jack (and hold switch, it's one part) on ebay and replace. It's cheap, and easy especially if your housing's starting to separate on its own.

I've replaced mine twice already :( There're loads of videos on how to do it, a good tip though is to make sure you buy a part with the whole hold switch on it. Most of the time you have to disassemble the current hold switch housing (the bit with the actual button that you slide on and off) and then reassemble it with the new part slotted in.

This is a pain in the arse, so make sure you buy it with the hold switch housing ready attached so you can simply replace it all.

Thanks instaxgirl. I'll definitely look into that =)

The other day, I also tried to play my ipod through my iHome radio dock. No dice there also =\. It charges like normal, but it just won't play music through that jack also. I dunno if the headphone jack is connected in some way to the iPod connection jack on the bottom.

Nope, definitely not. Mine plays fine through speakers even when the jack's bust. Maybe it's something gone wrong with the logic board then, in which case you're better off replacing it :(

Well, over the weekend, in a valiant effort to fix it, I got the sad ipod icon. My mom had a white ipod video, broken, but the jacks were still good. So I toyed with that a bit over the weekend and it's hard to avoid the inevitable....

But all good though. My mom found a lady on craigslist selling her 8gb nano for $60 and was able to talk her down to $40. So she went to get it (I gave her the money) and my little brother wanted that nano instead of his 5th gen 60gb video and we traded because he said it's better for him to use at the gym and he doesn't have as many songs to put on as I do.

Looks like I'm still part of the 5G video ipod club =)

I was thinking the same a few days ago., My 5G Black 60GB was purchased November 2005. I've run 300+ miles with it before getting something smaller, carried it with me for years, and it still holds a good charge and works good.

I have a 60GB black 5G, it's had an invisible shield on since day 1 so it's still in great condition, and it's still running. While other iPods are nice in their own way, I still feel that the 5G/5.5G were the pinnacle of iPod design. The larger screen, flat front and smaller clickwheel really made the thing look great.

Based on some comments in this thread I'm under the impression the 'classic' models don't hold up as well?

mine has seen better days but it has yet to fail me...

going to be buying a new battery and a whole new housing for it pretty soon...

My 30GB white 5G was the first Apple product I've ever owned and ultimately makes me want to switch to Mac. It's very durable (had it since 2006, still running like a champ). A while back the hold switch stopped working and I decided to poke around on the inside to see what the problem is. I had a small flat-head screwdriver and somehow it hit the end of one of the ribbon cables and I saw sparks and I heard a sound (the kind of sound you hear when a computer shuts down). I assembled everything again and I got the dreaded sad iPod icon. After looking it up on the internet I found that for most people it was a software issue, but I know in my case it wasn't. I tried hard reset, restore, everything but my iPod was still unresponsive. Then, I finally got the idea to reinstall the battery ribbon cable and it worked! (Turned out that the clip wasn't pushed in all the way.) I was so happy and relieved when I saw the thing power on. But unfortunately the hold switch still doesn't work.

Whew I didn't know this post would be that long.

so glad to hear these are lasting. My GF got one for Christmas when they first came out, so I guess 2005 and she still has it. I just recently sold my ZuneHD and since I'm going back to Mac I needed an ipod again. So she's going to give her old 30GB video ipod to me to use for now...

So I'm using my GF's 5G now, awesome, after coming from Nanos 2G, 3G, and 4G. One quick question - I know the backlight turns off, but I notice the screen doesn't... I swear my 4G nano's screen would turn off while playing. Just wondering if this is the design of the older ipods?

Anyway, I found a hacking forum and applied a sweet firmware, so loving this oldie even more - especially since I'm broke and needed an ipod =)

60 gb

I have a 60 gig in the glovebox of my 2004 BMW 325i. I pray it doesn't break, because I don't think the current iPod Classic will work with the BMW iPod hookup. I tried one once, and I couldn't get it to work. With the hookup, I make 5 playlists in iTUnes, BMW1, BMW2, etc. and then when it is hooked up in the glove compartment, it charges, and buttons 1-5 on the car stereo start the respective playlists, and button 6 plays the whole iPod. THe volume controls on the steering wheel adjust volume and skip tracks. I have a 32 Gig iPhone 4 for when I'm off for a walk, but on the road, my 60 gig holds everything else, ALL my music, plus most of the video, although I use the iPhone for video, with more than double the screen size.

The newer BMW's will display artist, track info, and you can search by artist, etc.

I absolutely love my 5.5G U2 model. Battery is great, video quality is quite good. I hope though in feature to replace the HDD with a flash drive.
