The point is, the most basic of element; text, is not razor sharp.

Do a test. Stare at the text on a 5k screen for a while. It's blocky.

You yourself said your very own eyesight is chit.
Looking at a 27" 5K retina from 12" is proof you have issues.

Like a deaf person saying their high end surround system sounds like crap.

I've reported the OP of the threat to the moderators - the fact that I'm jumped on within seconds because of a whiner making noise the OP has allowed to suck oxygen out of the forum without a single moderator doing something tells me all I need to know that nothing will actually be done.

The 5k is not infinitely smooth. Technically everything is 'retina' if you sit far enough away. there is no such thing as 'normal' viewing distances. Everyone is different.

Not sure why this thread has personally aggrieved so many people. 8K is obviously just around the corner. An 8k was released just a couple of months ago. Plus LG let slip earlier on in the year that Apple was going to release an 8k display.

The 5k has choppy text. Its just a fact. Roll on 8k. Although as someone pointed out, even 8k won't be good enough to produce completely sharp text.

It's going to be awhile. The GPU requirements, bandwidth limitation, etc etc aren't quite up to the task for real world use.

8k is more than twice the amount of pixels of 5k.

@Macmamamac: Instead of bringing your head really close to the screen, maybe try zooming in on the text?

8K will probably come, but in several years, as the GPU power, size, and cost limitations are overcome. The 5K iMacs have been out for less than 14 months, and are a huge step up from the prior 1440p models. And it's true most people look at their smartphones closer up than a desktop, it simply makes sense with a smaller screen.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing more content optimized for 5K.

Keep sitting that close to the screen and your eye sight will degrade to the same as us mere mortals.
