Serious party foul! This could come as a shocker for people moving from 11 non-pro to a 12 6.1" variant for people who have come to appreciate more perceived 'screen real estate'

I really wonder what the thinking was behind this

This was one of the first things I thought about after checking out new screen resolutions with the change to OLED on the 6.1".

I think the XR/11 was always a bit funny. It had the 326ppi going all the way back to the 4, but the point-width resolution of the Plus size (and Max size) phones. Always seemed kind of out of place. I'm sure those who understood it definitely appreciated getting a larger point resolution on the 6.1" though.

I guess now with the change to all OLED with @3x scaling they adjusted the entire lineup and its where they were intending to go all along. The XR/11 they just cut costs with that 326ppi LCD and squeezed as much life out of it as possible.

Never liked this on the xr and 11 when viewing in store, could never understand why text was smaller than the 11 pro. On a lot of websites it made the text too small.

How does the new resolution compared to iPhone X? Is it more screen real estate or smaller?

12PM: 2778 x 1284 (more real estate)
12/12P: 2532 x 1170 (more real estate)
X/XS/11P : 2436 x 1125
12m: 2436 x 1125 downscaled to 2340 x 1080 (same real estate as X)
all 3x3

Apparently the iPhone 12 mini uses the same screen resolution as the 5.8” iPhones, according to the iOS Simulator, which makes this a 495ppi iPhone UI. The actual device screen resolution is 476ppi, which suggests everything will run scaled

What exactly does this mean? That it is like the iPhone 'Plus' models where the point resolution was rendered at 3x but then down sampled only here it is being up sampled?

Not a problem, Xr and 11 support Display Zoom, 11 Pro and 12/pro does not. So comming from an 6s using display zoom I am actually more worried about things getting to small for my deteriorated eyesight on the 12 pro heading my way.

Mostly correct - its essentially like the Plus models where the point resolution was rendered at 3x and then downscaled.

The point resolution of the X/XS/11Pro AND the new 12 mini are 375 x 812.

375 x 812 @3x is 2436 x 1125 (the resolution of the X/XS/11Pro) but for the 12 mini it gets downscaled to 2340 x 1080.

FWIW, there's less of it happening here. For ex, the Plus phones had the point height @3x rendering as 1242 then downscaled to 1080 (where as the mini has it 1125 downscaled to 1080).

Ok. Writing this on 12 pro. It does indeed have zoomed mode. Guess apple just haven't updated the list.

For whatever reason I’m not really finding it to be an issue at all so far !

That’s good!

Coming from an XR I am finding this shift quite jarring. I am sure I will get used to it eventually, but right now things just don't seem right.

Same. Everything seems too large and cramped now. I've got the font size set to the lowest, but a lot of apps don't use it. This is a potential deal breaker. I realize I'm in the minority here, but I also use an Android device of around the same size (where you can adjust the scaling) and the 12 has significantly less real estate.

How small do you want the text to be? Don’t you want to be able to read the text on your screen. 🧐📱

I was worried since I’m upgrading from a xs max to a 12, thought text might be to small to read, looks like it’ll be the same size now. 😁

Well here's the comparison to my Pixel 3 XL from what I'm used to. The 12 resolution isn't quite as wide as the 3 XL, but the horizontal real estate still isn't proportional. But like I said, I know I'm in the minority and it's probably much too small for most people here, but I have no problem reading it. Had Apple left the width scaling the same as before (414pt), it wouldn't have been as bad, as I had no problem with content sizing on the 8 Plus that I had.

Ironically, Google's apps are the few third party apps that actually allow you to use the dynamic text size:

What app is the first one? Looks like web content and in safari you could get closer to your android screen by lowering the zoom level. It can be done per site or general in settings. Maybe that app has zoom setting or rely on safaris settings.

Think I’d go blind trying to read text on the pixel 😂 text looks perfect on the iPhone for me, if you ain’t happy return it.

Here's what it looks like on device: (iPhone 11 - iPhone 12)
Unfortunately this means we also lose the landscape split screen view in some apps. (Settings).

I noticed and experience the same on the 12 Pro. I even called apple to escalate this issue; really annoying that paying a premium (from iPhone 11 to 12 Pro) and get less screen real estate. Here's my Tesla app - can't miss how much this sucks.

Feedly. No zoom options unfortunately. Though I wonder if maybe it needs an update to better support the new 12 scaling width.

Web content is fine - Safari I can change the default zoom to something like 85%, and Chrome there's an experimental setting to match zoom to ios text size.

That's the dilemma - I much prefer the stability, fluidity, and quality of iOS over Android, among other things. My Pixel is dying so I need a new device and the Pixels this year are borderline downgrades. Not a fan of Samsung. I'm almost thinking about getting the 12 Mini at this point - if I can't match the real estate, I might as well just embrace the smaller scale and enjoy having a compact device again.

"Apps built with Xcode 12.0 or earlier will see a zoomed up iPhone 11 Pro resolution of 375×812 when run on the iPhone 12 or 12 Pro at its native resolution"

Looks like I may just have to wait until apps are updated. Later in the article it mentions that with Display Zoom on, apps will render as either the 11 Pro or a letterboxed SE 1st Gen depending if they're updated yet. I turned on zoom and most of the apps that look too big are letterboxed, meaning they have not been updated yet (and thus not taking advantage of the increased 12 resolution in standard view)
