Only utilities you'll need are VBE7 and AtiFlash and they can be found at TechPowerUp.
But you'll also need Bootcamp or PC as it all needs to be done in Windows environment. :(

Yes, it's Bootcamp and Windows that are the gating factors for me. :(

Didn't you say that you have a PC and you put the card in for the test???

You can use that to dump - mod - and flash the firmware, right?

No, I don't have a Window's PC of any sort, nor bootcamp on my 3,1 (and it would be massive work to put it on now due to RAID on an Apricorn card, etc.). Must be thinking of someone else. At one point I did try to flash my card using virtual box, though - heh, should have known that wouldn't work!

I'll just take it easy on the card/computer until that 110% absolutely certain nnMP announcement is made at WWDC. :) It's quite unstressed except for that one game anyway.

Thanks.

Sorry, I mixed you up with OP. He said that, not you.

Anyway, do you have any friend that has a Desktop PC running Windows? I will be very impressed if the answer is NO :D

Take the card to your friends home and flash the card should be very straight forward.

So... I just installed the new motherboard and I am having the exact same results -> mac 5770 card works @ 16x flashed 7970 only works @ 8x.
I think it safe to say that something happened to the card - something weird considering that the card works fine @ 16x when used on a normal PC.
So mac pro motherboard was not damaged.
I will be keeping this card for the time being (which will end in my PC), probably sell the old mac pro mobo (which operates perfectly) and use the change to buy a new card generation graphics card which supports El Capitan and metal...
