Thanks everyone for all the info and advice. I decided on going with a XR. Just seems like the best bang for the buck for me. Only thing I know I will miss is ID touch since I use it for a few different log in's on my apps.

That was my biggest beef when moving to the newer phones, which is a big reason I didn’t go for an X last year, and instead opted for the 8+, but I love it. Most of my apps automatically switched over to it, just asking me if I want to use Face ID to log in - so easy!

Looking to replace my old 6 Plus with a new phone. I keep my phones for a long time so trying to figure out the best phone to get now. My carrier is Cricket which means I’ll have to purchase the phone outright. I’m use to the plus size of a phone and mainly use my phone for normal calling, texting and emailing. I do a lot of web browsing and watching YouTube videos. Also like to use the camera for different pics. So if you had to purchase one phone that you would keep for at least the next 3 years which would it be?
[doublepost=1542117241][/doublepost]I have an 8plus and love it. Not buying anything else

If I had the 8 plus already then I wouldn't be shopping for a phone but my 6 plus has the "touch disease" and it's just getting worse. I know apple can fix it for $150 for I just don't think it's worth spending that money on a fix when I can use it towards a new updated phone.

I swapped with my wife 8 plus and she gotten my previous X.

I doesnt know if I should sell my 8 plus and go for xr. Should i?

If you like the 8 Plus, there's little reason to go to the XR unless you want a smaller overall size device and smaller top and bottom bezels, not to mention the new gestures and FaceID. For some, that's enough reason to change. For others, they love their 8 Plus.

Totally couldn’t make up my mind on topping up few hundreds for it. I miss having no home button for some reason after swapping thou.. temptation is real dea . Lo

I upgraded from a 6s to the XR, but if I had an 8 Plus, I wouldn't have. For me it would not be worth the difference in what a used 8 Plus would sell for and what a new XR would cost. I really like the XR, but I chose it because of its value to me over the XS and XS Max. If I already had an 8 Plus, it would be more valuable to me to keep the 8 Plus for a couple more years. YMMV.

OP ... you said you watch videos and take pictures.

Based on that:

1. Max (bigger OLED screen ... HDR for videos ... dual modern lens camera ... larger storage for pictures 512GB ... FaceID)
2. XR (bigger screen ... modern lens camera ... longer battery life for watching videos ... lower priced ... FaceID)
3. 8+ (dual older lens camera)

(If you are on T-Mobile though ... then I would definitely consider an XR or Max as these are equipped to handle T-Mobile's newer frequencies.)

The list in brackets are items you would probably notice. Processors and other stuff from an experience factor probably won't make a difference. Videos will only run so fast ... surfing the web and pages loading probably will not make that much of a difference.

You will need to ask yourself if the extra $$$ for the Max though is worth it over the XR.

I'd say go for the XR, only if you want something different. If I hadn't purchased my 8+ this past February, I would've gone that route. I too was coming from a 6 plus phone and really wanted the X but I felt it was too small (and expensive) and now the Max is too big and very expensive lol. I've made a vow to myself that I would never spend $1000 on a phone. Whenever I get tired of this bezel design I'm moving to the XR, it seems like a pretty good phone.

I've bought an 8 Plus. I don't like the new design and Xr bezels are horrible. 8 Plus is optically without a bezels because they don't interfere with display.

On the topic of missing the home button, after playing with the Xr (and Xs) in an Apple store for about 30 minutes, I found that the swipe gestures on the Xr which replaced the Home button presses to be easier to use than physically pressing down on the Home button. It made things a lot easier ergonomically, especially when operating the phone with one hand.

Now if the reason you'll miss the button centers more around giving up TouchID for FaceID, then I have nothing to say; that to me is completely personal preference as I feel they both work well in general.

All of which I agree with, but if you have the XS Max, it is a little bit more difficult to use your thumb to reach down and swipe up to invoke gesture controls. Especially if you’re doing this one handed. Gestures are sleek, but that ‘Extra reach’ is somewhat cumbersome versus using the home button to push, which was slightly easier versus reaching down to the bottom of the phone towards the black bar.

I spend last night comparing the screens on my wife's 7 plus and my Xr. Can't say that the Xr screen is bad, but it certainly is not as sharp as the plus screen. I was enjoying the 7 plus screen much more.

As much as I love and prefer about everything else about the Xr, especially its size, I'm returning the Xr. I just can't get over the screen and that's what I look at every time I use it.
Already have a very good deal on a mint second hand 256gb 8 plus, so that's what I'm going with this year.

If Apple comes with a Xr kind of phone with 1080p screen next year, I might jump on it.

Why is there no XS/Max option to get 128 GB?? This is one of those incomprehensibly maddening things like no headphone jack or SD card slot that Apple does that almost puts me off them.
Well as we know Apple never supported micro sd on iPhone and the headphone jack is dead because = buy our Bluetooth headphones. Upsell at all times!

I agree on 128GB but again it forces that higher tier purchase if you need more than the pitiful 64GB.

I'd have said 1080p was definitely coming to XIR next year but Apple need the margins on selling cheaper components now more than ever with recent stock dip.

Watching movies on an iPhone XS Max?
You do know that iPhone after iPhone X has 19.5:9
Most youtube movies has 16:9 or 4:3 anyways, witch can things makes smaller watching on an iPhone. Still smaller than iPad by 2.1 - 6 Times, cuz iPad and Macbook or desktop will be much more greater to watch movies than a tiny iPhone XS Max or XR/Plus.

For Web Browsing and camera, of course get the XS Max because it is slightly bigger and has better night time shot photos. Never bother with 8 Plus, XS/XR will be supported bit longer.

Viewing content on the largest device available or accessible at the time, of course usually makes the most sense.
The XS Max still being a phone...it usually goes more places than an iPad or Macbook would go for many people.

If video was popular since the days of viewing on iPods when the screens were only 2 inches, and very low resolution,
a XS Max is plenty better than that lol.
