i can’t seem to decide if I want to upgrade to the XS Max. All the videos I’ve watched on it make it look amazing. It’s a lot of money though.

I was skeptical about the iPhone X when it came out and thought it looked strange. I then decided to get the 8 plus. Months later the idea of the X grew on me. I even went to check the X out again and the screen blew me away. I’m sure when I see the XS Max will blow me away even more.

The camera features are way better but I don’t take a ton of pictures.

I don’t know I just can’t seem to decide. What are your thoughts?

Very thing I did and I am personally happy with that decision. No one here can make that decision for you but lots of little enhancements make it worth it. Camera is amazing, love swipe gestures and a little better sound. All around a solid device. Sell 8+ to recoup some costs.

My advice. Go check it out in a store and make your decision off that. No one can really tell you if it’s worth it for you to upgrade or not...

I came from the X. Also had the 8 plus for a short while. To me this is the best iPhone ever released, and I probably won’t upgrade until I absolutely have to. And this coming from someone who had every iPhone since the 3GS. I’m just not sure what else they can do.

I don’t have my 8+ fully paid off. So I’d have to pay it off then sell it or pay $30 and turn it in.

I have the 8+ preordered the XS Max really liked the phone, screen was beautiful, didn't take long to get used to the face ID was quite fast, the phone was fast. I was having cellular issues so I returned it before my 14 days was up. I now ordered the XS but now wishing I just reordered the Max. I will see if I like the smaller size if not I will return it and get the Max again.

If the Max will give you the coverage you need and you’re happy with the service, it’s a great phone. I travel too much in marginal coverage areas and simply could not keep the same level of service on my Max that I get on my 8+, so I returned the Max. It really is a great phone, though it is VERY $$$$.

Last year I had pre-ordered the X coming from the 7+. I then went into the store and had the X in hand and compared it with my 7+. The screen just felt too small and things were harder to read, especially things seem to be narrower. So I cancelled the x and went with the 8+.

Now this year is a different story. No question I went for XS Max. The screen is just gorgeous and so much easier to read. Photos and Videos look stunning. Camera and Speakers improved quite a bit. It's fast.

Besides the screen best for me is FaceID. It's quick and reliable. Only last weekend when I got in a rain shower, it didn't want to unlock me being wet with sunglasses (rain drops on glasses). Once I took the sunglasses off it worked. Many Apps I use frequently take advantage of FaceID. So much simpler.

I am on the annual IUP so for me the XS Max was a no brainer.

But that might not apply to everyone. Good luck with your decision.

After I reset all settings my XS Max had similar coverage than 8+ in marginal areas. However my work 6 is slightly better. Even the old 4 with bumper was able to send a text or make a call in areas which today's phones struggle.

Last year, we were hesitant about the X, so we ordered both ordered the 8 Plus, which we really liked. This year, we decided we were ready for Face ID and traded in for XS Max. No regrets! It is so fast and Face ID is amazing. I haven’t missed the home button one bit!

Totally not worth it, compared to the 8+ the Max has, worse and much smaller screen, worse speakers, worse battery life, very bad camera when compared to the 8+ and a very bulky and outdated design.

I'm really leaning toward getting it even more now. Still have to see it in person. The Verizon stores in my area are currently out of stock.

Just got my Max on Tuesday, came from 8+. The main reason for the upgrade is that the 8+ has been sub par in so many ways. For whatever reason, from day 1, it never felt as snappy as my 7+. Multi-tasking was horrible, it was never able to keep many programs in memory. iOS 12 helped with the speed though. I was very happy with the camera though.

I was growing a little weary of the form factor too so decided I'd upgrade. Was sold on the Xs as it was a slightly larger screen with a much smaller case. Then I went to the store and held the Max and I was sold. Very slightly smaller case than the 8+ with a much larger screen. Operations are smooth and the extra GB of RAM is noticeable.

It's only been a couple days but impressed. Very easy transition to Face ID and swiping gestures.

Have the 8+. Passed on X as I wanted X+ last year. I’ve held and tested the XSM and I think it’s too big/heavy. Before the go workout comments .. I do. Not a small guy. The issue for me is weight/balance and what you get with the extra screen. From my testing the only real advantage the XSM holds is with watching videos.

I was going to get the XS but the RF issues have me holding off on that now. I do know I want a smaller phone. The 8+ is the best phone Apple has ever made IMO. I prefer aluminum/glass over steel.

At this point I’m holding out to see/handle the XR. I may be willing to give up some screen quality for size, feel and battery life. The 8+ is as heavy as a phone should be IMO.

Can't tell if trolling...
The Max has the exact same width screen of the 8 Plus. Because it is also longer, it actually has a larger screen than 8 Plus. Speakers were improved and the camera is an improvement. It's no more bulky than the 8 Plus as far as footprint goes, only a bit heavier. How do you figure the design is outdated if this is only the second year for X style whereas 8 Plus is basically a 6sss LOL

I thought I wanted a smaller phone too but the XS was just too small. Felt like a toy lol

It is small. My wife has it and, to me, it feels perfect in the hand. I love the screen of my 8+ but I think I have reached the point where I want something lighter. XS or XR most likely. After all the time I have spent ‘testing’ I really don’t see an advantage of the XSM outside of video. Good bit of ‘wasted’ space on the sides of the 8+ and the XSM.. and scrolling is pretty easy. I have an IPP if I want to really watch video/movies.

It’s all personal but what’s irking me about the larger phone is that it demands too much attention. We spend a lot of time at baseball and football fields.. as well as going out with our kids. The 8+/XSM cannot go in my front pocket and I am not tossing them in my wife’s purse. I am tired of having to find a place to put the big phone.. on a bleacher.. in a chair cup holder or the edge of our table at restaurant. I want my phone to have less ‘attention’.. looking for toss in pocket and grab when needed. I don’t wear tight jeans.. my body structure doesn’t work for that type of clothing.

I had a 6S Plus and 7 Plus and really loved the bigger screen size. Bought an X last year thinking it would have a bigger screen than the Plus phones in a smaller package. Well, I was disappointed with the X’s screen size, it felt like a downgrade from the 7 Plus. I kept the X because I loved everything else about it, OLED, pixels per inch, amazing (at the time) camera. But I’ve always missed the bigger screen of the Plus phones.

I bought a Max and it seemed like everything I wanted - all the advantages of the X, plus the bigger screen size of the Plus phones. I was thrilled with it. It was a little heavy - I think it’s about 0.7 ounces heavier than the 8 Plus and nearly 1 ounce heavier than the 7 Plus. 1 ounce doesn’t sound like much but the 7 Plus was already on the heavy side for me.

But I was willing to accept the weight because I LOVED the Max’s display.

And the camera: the X was a big upgrade over the 7 Plus camera, and the Max is a big upgrade over the X’s camera.

Sadly, I had LTE and wifi connectivity issues with my Max. I spent many hours researching these problems, chatting online with Apple tech support reps, and trying different things (resetting network settings, wiping the phone and setting up as a new iPhone, and other things), none of which fixed the problems.

Now, the problems I was having weren’t as bad as some people were describing on the Macrumors forums. Probably 80% of the time i had excellent or at least satisfactory connectivity. .

But I couldn’t live with the possibility that my $1200+ phone would have worse LTE and wifi performance, even just 20% of the time, than my X or any of my previous iPhones.

I think there’s a good chance Apple will address these issues — either with software patches that fix the problems, or by ultimately acknowledging the problem and offering to replace iPhones for the small percentage of units that have problems.

But I didn’t want to take the risk that I’d have to live with a phone that was less than perfect, for the money I paid. So I took it back after about 8 days with the phone, and I’m using my X again.

While there seem to be hundreds of people on these forums with problematic XS and Max units, and probably thousands more, I believe they represent a tiny, tiny percentage of the millions of units sold.

And if these issues are fixable, I think it’s likely that they will be fixed in the coming weeks.

So I will try again, and buy another Max.

Regarding the price: yes, it seems insane to spend so much on a phone. But here’s how I justify it:

I buy the phone on the iPhone Upgrade Program. In this program, a 256gb Max plus AppleCare is $60/month, or $2/day. I get way more than $2 worth of value from my phone every day.

The IUP gives me the option to upgrade in a year or to keep the phone. If I am concerned about the cost, I can keep the phone for 2 years and it will be fully paid off. (The program charges 0% interest and no fees - it merely divides the cost of the phone + AppleCare into 24 equal payments.). Once the phone is paid off, it’s mine to keep. At that point, I can sell it, it’ll probably be worth 1/3 or at least 1/4 of its initial price. (Based on eBay prices of sold iPhones, iPhones seem to hold better than half of their value after 1 year and about 1/3 of their value after 2 years.).

Of course, your iPhone 8 Plus is still an absolutely great phone and would continue to serve you well for another year. If you could hold out another year, you’d have the option to get whatever iPhone Apple introduces in September 2019, *or* buy a then 1-year-old 2018 Max for a reduced price.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

LOL that's my issue with the bigger phones, trying to find somewhere to put them. I carry mine in my back pocket when walking but when I sit I'm either holding it or putting it down on a table or in the seat next to me. Are the keys for the keyboard not bigger on the XSM like on the 8 Plus? That was one thing I didn't like about the XS, tiny keys on the keyboard. I also noticed I kept touching the camera while holding it so if I went to take a photo there would be a smudge there.

common now you have to see the 6 design as the current design. Its NO DIFFERENT. The X is just an evolution of the same shape and style of phone from 2014. Curved edges/glass.
The X isn't a new style of design.

How many different ways can you design a phone slab???
If we go by your logic, then every slab phone on the market now is the same design...most have back and front glass with a metal frame sandwiched between.

iPhone 3 series was completely different then 4.
the 4-5 was a different design completely even though it was still squared off. The 6 design has its own design shape that carries through the the x and xs lines.
There are different shapes a phone can get. Just saying the 6 design is the exact same shape as the X because it is. Its not a full redesign its an evolution of the same design.
The 4-5 was somewhat of an evolution in design but still very different. Glass/sandwhich style with band in center. The 5's was a unibody back shell with flush glass.

It was sarcasm for the fact that the OP is asking such question when it Max is totally worth upgrading from the iPhone 8 Brick... oops 8 Plus.
