i felt the same way moving from my 1GHz PowerBook to the MacPro. Just the speed increase within OS X was eye-opening.

iMac G4 800mhz -> iMac G5 1.9ghz -> Mac Pro 2.66

The G5 was fast, but the Mac Pro puts its bonfire out :D

Centris 610 @ 0.020GHz x 1 --> Mac Pro @ 2.66GHz x 4

That's 133 fold increase in processor speed (not counting the fact I have 4 CPUs vs. 1). You guys don't even come close :D

Man, I had a Centris 610 in college (and two pcs in between, not counting secondary laptops...).

cheers.

My computing history looks like this:

Commodore Vic 20 -- 1 mhz

...many years passed

Pentium PC 75 mhz

Pentium II PC 350 mhz

iMac G4 800 mhz

iMac C2D 2330 mhz

The most significant speed jump for me was the latest. My iMac rocks!

I just made the jump from my Powerbook G4, which was really a tank for the 5-6 years I beat it to death. I finally made the switch to a Mac Pro and the jump in speed is amazing

Has any one else experienced such a jump? It really shows off the power of a workstation like this one.

I do have some ?'s

Now I decided to get the Dell 2407WFP and I am planning to hook up my Xbox 360 to this monitor via component cables. All the monitor has (that I can tell) are video inputs.

How and where do I input the audio for the 360?
Bear in mind that I didn’t get speakers yet, so if that’s the answer what are a good set of speakers to get to do such a thing (I don’t need anything crazy like surround sound or anything right now I just want the sound for my 360 to come out)

Thank you all in advance, this forum always seems helpful.

i am probably going to make the biggest jump ever

I am on a 700 mhz G3 iBook with 648 megabytes of RAM
and i am getting a 2.66 ghz mac pro with 5 gigs of ram this june

i cant wait for the speed increase

Wow, your setup is identical to mine. Mac Pro 2.66 w/ Dell 2407WFP and Xbox 360. I purchased the Xbox 360 VGA adapter to plug into my Dell monitor (resulting in a better picture than component or composite). For audio, I plugged the Xbox 360 into the same Onkyo 500 watt receiver that my Mac Pro is plugged into.

Gaming on the 2407WFP is sweet. :D

when I made the switch to Mac, I went from a 3.6 GHz Pentium 4 to a 2.16Ghz Core Duo. Even though the proccessor was clocked slower, the Core Duo beat that P4 hands down. Plus I think that OSX is very streamline.

but it was an odd power jump. :) good move.

My speed history:

.894MHz--> 1MHz--> 25MHz--> 266Mhz--> 533MHz (x2)--> 1.4GHz

Or by CPU (all Motorola chips!)

6809 --> 6502 --> 68040 --> 7451 --> 7455

I also had a 2.5 GHz Celeron, but the less said about that the better. :eek:

My original Mac was 6 MHz.

No typo, no missing digits :)

I also can remember buying a DayStar Digital 32 MHz accelerator for my 16 MHz Mac SE/30.

And I thought that was fast! :)

I guess... but it's not all that uncommon with how far technology has progressed in the past 5 or 6 years. I guess if a person upgrades every year, their increases in performance will be less noticeable. I'm not going to go through all the machines I've had, but I'll just go with my two most recent Macintoshes, which also represent the largest increase in speed.

iMac G3 500MHz -> 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook.

EDIT: Oh, and congratulations on your purchase! Hopefully it serves you as faithfully as the Powerbook G4. :D

If you need an interim boost, the Sonnet Encore really does work nicely in the Cube -- my cube server is rock solid. Provantage sells the 1.8GHz kit for ~$260.

Nah, hopefully I'll only have to survive two more months with my trusty but slow cube. Then on to dual core Intel goodness!

I'm still waiting to break the GHz Barrier with my Macs. My fastest Mac is a dual 500MHz G4 (still fast by todays standards), but hope to get an Aluminum Powerbook as my next main unit.

My PC speed bumps have gone 167MHz, -> 700MHz, 3.0 GHz
Apple speed bumps 16MHz -> 500MHz (G3) -> dual 500MHz (G4)
although I recently recieved an 8100/100 as a gift :)

wow... I love the older macs. I dont know why, I have a bit of a soft spot for the PPC. it was trusty, worked hard, and did what we all wanted it to do. Then intel came along, tucked PPC into bed, and now getting what we want doing... quicker!

Same here, I fondly remember the days of PowerPC- there was just something 'magical' about using a chip different than anyone else.

That being said, I think that the move to Intel was for the best (especially in terms of notebook processors). :)
