Thanks for the feedback everyone... Just a few more quick updates...

I didn't mention it before, but she's very mentally acute. At 86 you get set in your ways a bit though, so change comes more slowly. Anyway, assuming I make it to 86, I hope I'm as together as she is. She lives alone, with a little help from family & friends... still drives during the day, and gets around pretty good.

I spent a half-hour with her on the phone tonight. She'd had a bunch of questions for me, but had figured most of them out by the time we talked. One thing that threw her off a bit was navigating from folder to folder in the e-mail app. She'd moved a bunch of things to trash, and couldn't figure out how to get those back in the inbox. We figured it out, and she was like "oh, that's how you do that...".

The difference between "sleep mode" and "off" was something that needed some explaining, but I think she got it... I think.

Searching & browsing is really new to her. I didn't realize how little of this she did with the webTV. Google search "results" are really misnamed. These aren't search "results", they're search "suggestions" or "links"... The results are what you get after you click on the links. I think that was throwing her off a bit. Maybe the whole concept of hyperlinking is something that I need to explain better.

One thing I always keep in mind in these situations; with any luck, we'll all be "in their shoes" someday, so I try to see myself in that position. I wonder what new technolgies will be beyond our grasp, as the younger generation rolls their eyes at us. And the same will happen to them. So, help out an older person. At one time, they were younger than you are right now, and were probably better looking too ;-)

This is something I have always wondered about myself... and kind of look forward to seeing in a strange way.

I look at my cousins kids (all 5 years of age and under) and just laugh to myself. For them the internet was always there, iPhones with always connected internet, 10,000 songs in your pocket. I can't imagine what will be going on when they are in their 80s.

This is an excellent thread. It's nice to see something of this nature as opposed to all the "When do I get my iPad" threads. :)

I went through this with my Grandmother before she passed away. We tried the WebTV, a NetBook and like you said, it was just too much for her to learn. The entire boot up the computer, find and open IE, minimize, maximize, files, folders, start menu, shut down, etc. She had never used or even laid a finger on a computer in her 74 years so imagine the learning curve on that one. :p

Unfortunately, nothing like the iPad existed at that time, but I'm sure it would have been perfect. Sleek, efficient, easy to use and intuitive.

Great post, OP! I'm upgrading my 32GB to the 64GB (not sure whether to go 3G or not) and my 84 yo father and 81 yo mother are going to take my current one.

My dad has had computers since around 1982 (Vic-20, anyone?) and carries a laptop wherever he goes. He's always having trouble with them, though, and I think the iPad will be great for him to do email, games, and web surfing. He will LOVE finding new apps in the AppStore and I will love the fact that he can install and delete as many as he wants without causing trouble. I've spent months of my life doing over-the-phone support for him! LOL It will be interesting to see how he handles the UI.
