Quad core, 2.8Ghz, 1TB, 3GB.

I've been waiting for the new mini but have a chance to buy this to replace my MP 1,1.

I know I need about $200 in RAM, and a USB3 card would be nice, but this seems like a good deal.

Thoughts?

I think it's a good deal as I paid essentially the same price for the same configuration a few months ago. The 3GB of RAM was a little low so I kicked it up to 32GB of RAM for $280.

macofalltrades.com has that same model MP right now for about $1,300 (I've found their prices to be very competitive). See screen shot below. Yep, looks like you got a great deal, especially if it's in excellent condition. Congrats! :)

Thanks Lou, that's a great doc.

Not a lot of difference between it and my 1,1 but it's good to know the differences.

^^^^It's not a choice. It would be a CPU replacement. There are threads on this site outlining the procedure, or download this:

http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/macpro_mid2010.pdf

You should download the Tech Guide anyway and learn about your new machine.

Lou

Yes agreed that is most excellent, thanks! You suppose I can use this guide as reference for my 4,1-->5,1? They should be similar enough, yes...?

I want to reiterate that when upgrading a single CPU 4,1/5,1 it is wise to use the X5xxx series CPUs as they can use all 4 RAM slots fully. The W3xxx CPUs are currently limited to 56GB.

It will be interesting if we get 32 GB sticks

Okay great! Thanks again I appreciate it. Just downloaded that. :)

So just curious: Did you buy the 5,1 yet?

Thanks MVC for the reminder. Am using a W3680 and probably won't go beyond that for the duration that I use my current MP. Curious to see what Apple does for nMP gen2 (personally I'd still like to see them change it back to the previous form factor). :)

.................
One question Lou.
Is there a similar Tech Guide as good as that one but for the nMP?
If you know one please give me the link.
Thank you very much :D

That's a great deal on a 5,1 provided it's not broken. Keep us posted. We are all living vicariously through you since we can't buy every good deal that comes along. :p

That is an excellent deal for a 5,1 :) I paid $950 for my base model 4,1 almost a year ago. I flashed it to 5,1; upgraded the RAM, processor, graphics card, and added a couple SSDs and its a hell of a machine.

I repeat, $950 for a 5,1 is a great deal. I'm excited for you!

$950 is pretty good, I reckon I recently got a pretty good deal on a 5.1 mid 2010MP. $AUD1100, dual quad core 2.4GHz, 6GB, 1TB. Now in the process of upgrading. Good fun.

That's a good price. I paid not quite that for my 4,1 last September. Did the same flash to 5,1 and upgraded the CPU to a w3680. Added a PCIe SSD too. Haven't upgraded the RAM or GPU yet but looking forward to doing so! :)

May I ask where you bought yours from?

For anyone interested, it looks like the OP may have bought that 5,1. Check out this thread:

Yes, I got it yesterday. Had to drive 90 minutes each way to get it but it is in great shape. She had taken it to an Apple Store the day before and had them run diagnostics on it, wipe the drive install a clean Mavericks and clean out the innards. It looks and runs like new. Paid $900.

She is an audio engineer and had purchased it only to run one audio editor that I forget the name of. She has a job that supplies what she needs so she decided to sell the Pro. She had it on Czl, I don't understand why she didn't have more takers. Her price started at $1600 with the audio program (I forget which but she said it was worth $500+). She pulled the program and dropped it to $1000 and at the exchange came down to $900 with no negotiating (I asked how firm her price was she said she could take $900, I said done).

Ordered 16GB last night, installed a 500GB SSD, am in the process of copying my main drive to the SSD then install Mavericks on it. Will then just move 3 drives from the old to the new and I should be running.

Will start looking for a cheap USB3 PCI card now, although with 4 bays it is not critical.

I'm also thinking I should get a couple 4TB drives as my current drives are 3-6 years old.

I just wish it support 6GB SATA but all things considered I don't think I'll really notice it
