Just got one myself (4,1 flashed to 5,1)

:apple:

I just picked up a late 2009 4,1 single proc Mac Pro for $800. Flashed the firmware to 5,1. Bumped the ram from 16gb to 24gb and added a PCIe SSD adaptor for an existing Crucial M4 500GB SSD I had. I also added an nvidia GTX 550ti that I already had lying around to hold me over until I find something better. I have two GTX670s in my gaining rig that I will eventually upgrade, may cycle one down to the Mac Pro.

I went back and forth for ages between a nMP, a mackintosh, and upcycling a 2009. Decided to take a chance with the 2009, as I really like the form factor and potential value.

Sor far, it working well. Had the system lock up on me once, and I'm pretty sure its the 550ti graphics card. (It's an older guy that has had issues in the past). If that continues, I'll throw the stock card back in to rule it out.

My priority now is to find a "new" processor. Probably going to go with the w3680 or w3690 unless someone has a better suggestion. Main plans are to hold on to this for the next year or so until I get a feel for how the nMP is going to take hold (or not). Main uses are light video editing (FCPX) and photo editing PS CC. Gaming will continue to live on a dedicated gaming computer, but it would be nice to have a second system that can run Minecraft for my daughter, I'm guessing once I upgrade the CPU, it will run Minecraft without issue.

Big thanks to this forum for the info that got me to this point.

That's a good price. I paid not quite that for my 4,1 last September. Did the same flash to 5,1 and upgraded the CPU to a w3680. Added a PCIe SSD too. Haven't upgraded the RAM or GPU yet but looking forward to doing so! :)

May I ask where you bought yours from?

For anyone interested, it looks like the OP may have bought that 5,1. Check out this thread:

Sorry for the late reply! I've been pretty busy the last few days. Anyways, I bought mine refurbished on Amazon! It literally looks and works like brand new, inside and out. I was very impressed!
