My other half has a really old Windows surface pro - with a ‘MiniDP ’ connector - like the one in the back of the Mateview monitor, infact.
What generation is the Surface Pro? If you’re not sure, check what processor it has (right-click on “This PC” and click “Properties”). This helps determining how high a pixel clock the system can push i.e. whether you’ll be able to get 60 Hz refresh rate — or just 30 Hz. :)

The 3:2 resolution itself shouldn’t be a problem.

Would a cable of [‘MiniDP ’ to ‘MiniDP ’] - work for 4K 60MHZ - for the 3:2 Aspect ratio?
Yes, as long as it’s a DisplayPort 1.2/1.4 cable and thus supports “4K” at 60 Hz. DisplayPort doesn’t actually have a resolution limit — it has a bandwidth limit. A cable that can handle “4K” at 60 Hz can also handle 5K at 30 Hz for example… not that many people would do that ;) (I have LOL)

Hi a,

It’s a model 1

Does dp v1.2 same as the Mateview. That’s got to be a good sign ?

I’ve ordered the monitor now, looking forward to it!

Thanks for your help

That has a Core i5-3317U “Ivy Bridge” CPU. DisplayPort’s pixel clock limit for Ivy Bridge is given as 348 MHz for 8bpc.
Running the MateView at 3840×2560 and 60 Hz is definitely beyond it, but 30 Hz or a slightly higher refresh rate should work using a custom timing.
Or 2160×1440 at 60 Hz. :)

You guys are brainiacs! ?

Sorry, I should have said, the missus is getting a more recent whiz bang, in a month from work, a Microsoft surface laptop 4.

Happy to run a lower res until then.

Heck, I even run standard HD res for my 2 eletriques - as the vpn won’t scale up nicely for 4k

Screens fine for work laptop - and awesome for the m1 mba ?

2820×1880 at 60 Hz might also work. I happen to have an Ivy Bridge system and am going to do some tests.

Thanks Amethyst!

It would be great if I can show the Mrs exactly which config setting would be best for text on the screen, Word documents, PDFs et cetera, based on her old laptop.

Your help is much appreciated, to a monitor screen numpty like me :)

Best wishes
Martin

Good news Mr A! ?

We set her laptop up on the mateview yesterday, and it happily runs the full Res - 3840×2560 and 60 Hz!

I didn’t go into the laptop specs etc, but imagine it must have had top specs when ordered etc.

We set the W10 laptop up with ‘looks like 200%’ in the end

The monitor is awesome….. huge… like the Death Star hovering over the dinning table, next to the old monitor! ?

I have been on the hunt for a 4K 24 inch monitor, and finally I found one! The Electriq Eiq-244kMHDR.

View attachment 1775153

It has a light matte AG coating, 10 bit IPS panel, 300 nits, and costs £140 ($190). Text looks ultra-smooth like a printed page on this screen! It works perfectly with my Mac and is detected as a Retina Display. Even though it's only 185 dpi (instead of 218 dpi), 200% scaling looks fine sitting 20" away. Calibrating with a colorimeter I get 99% sRGB, 82% DCI-P3, 285 nits brightness, contrast ratio 950:1, and deltaE 1.9. The default manual sRGB values 50,50,50 gave a color temperature of 6700K, and 48,50,48 gave 6500K - perfect for desktop usage.

The driver board is also great. HDMI 2.0 x2, Displayport 1.4 x2. I can use this with my Linux laptop too. Flawless switching between multiple sources and sleeping/waking up.

What panel is inside?

There are only two 4K 24" panels in the whole world currently being manufactured. One is the glossy LG used in the Ultrafine, so this must use the BOE MV238QUM-N20 panel. The larger version of the BOE also appears in the Asus ProArt:

Repair-ability

The monitor case unscrews at the back. The LCD panel and driver board are widely available on AliExpress. The power supply is a standard 12V external power brick. If the monitor dies in a few years I'm confident I could repair it.

Where can I buy it?

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ele...c-hdr-gaming-monitor-eiq-244kmhdr/version.asp (UK, Europe)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163291137904 (Many countries)

https://shop.tbfocus.com/item.php?id=555251609724 (Same panel, world?)

I have also seen monitors with this panel on several websites dealing in CCTV products.

Why not get the P2415Q second-hand?

The Dell has many issues: horizontal gray lines on display, poor backlight uniformity, grainy AG on white backgrounds, unreliable driver board, only HDMI 1.4 on older models.

Why not get the LG Ultrafine 24" or 21.5"?

My usage is coding, writing, reading, web browsing in a moderately lit home environment. I find the small reflections from glossy displays annoying, and having to keep the brightness high to minimise them is fatiguing on the eyes. The Ultrafines are not fully laminated glass like the iMacs, so not up to the same quality.

Also, the Ultrafines seem hard to repair if they go wrong, and could be difficult to connect with non-Mac computers (although bi-directional displayport-usb c cables are now on the market).

TL;DR

Finally a solid 4K monitor for Mac and PC users who aren't photographers. Why isn't this more popular?

Small criticisms

Viewing angles are good, but not the best I've seen on IPS monitors. 350 nits would be better for bright environments but I've not seen that on 1080p 24" IPS monitors either. No DCI-P3 color gamut, but not something I currently need.
Great write up. Shame about the BBC website being depicted though🤣

Well I received the monitor today. A couple of thoughts.

1. Then screen really is great. It makes the LG IPS screen I was using look poor. It's obviously sharp, but it also seems bright and uniform. The very faint lines are visible, but in practice you would have to be sitting very close or have very good eyesight to be bothered by it. Viewing angles seem fine to me, if not exceptional.

2. The stand is solid, but way too low for me. I'll be getting a VESA stand from Amazon ASAP.

3. The ODS is pretty fiddly, but I don't suppose I'll need to change any settings once I'm happy with them.

4. Value for money wise this screen is ridiculous, it would be a good deal at the original price but at under £100 as I paid, with next day delivery as well, I would defy anyone to find something better.

Thanks to tornado99 for posting about the screen in the first place.

p.s. For people in the UK the Huawei MateView is currently available for just under £400 directly from Huawei UK, if you get the £100 cashback offer and order before 29th March.

Thanks for the tip off ‘KB579’ - For the Mateview deal.

Just what the missus needed in a monitor - it can do - 2 full sized A4 document pages side by side on the hamusive screen!
Awesome for less than £400.

You are very welcome. It does look like a steal. I'm quite happy with my cheap 24" 4k electriQ, other than it spoiling all lower resolution displays for me. :)

I think my next monitor will definitely be some sort of ~4k 3:2 display. Really I'd like that Microsoft Surface Studio display — 28" 4500x3000, 10 point multi-touch, pen input, mics, cameras, fancy stand — just without the PC attached and the price. Being a bit more realistic I'll be keeping my eyes on Huawei's monitors, they do seem to be the next best option to the Apple Studio display, at a fraction of the price.

Good news for US folks. I heard that one of the chinese brands on Amazon is intending to release a 24 inch 4K soon.

This seems to be an issue with very high pixel density monitors. I experienced it on my 4K 24 inch screens. One of my panels it disappeared completely after a few weeks use, the other panel it is still faintly there but only if my eyes are about 20cm from the screen, at normal distance 60cm I can't see the lines.

Try leaving it on a while.
Bumping this thread just to mention that this has happened to my screen too. I could see the lines before but I noticed today that they have all but disappeared. I've not changed any setting or done anything I can think of to cause this but they are now essentially imperceptible. I have to stare very closely to see anything at all now, and they are so faint that at a normal distance I can't see a thing. It's a bit odd that a screen would change like this, but I'm not complaining, this monitor was a steal.

Any update on this? The link is dead.

Kicking myself that I didn’t pick up the P2415Q when I had the chance several years ago. Had no idea 4k monitors below 27” would go extinct.

I hate that 1080p monitors even exist in 2022 (almost 2023). They are so horrible, even at 21.5”. Text is a blurry mess, but people seem mostly fine with it.

Still see the occasional “4k is pointless below 27” comment, as if we’re talking about a living room television. It’s a bloody PC monitor. It’s right in front of your face.

They’re shipping 4k panels on 13.3” laptops now. But we can’t get anything below 27” for a desktop monitor. Crazy.

This seems to be still available. You'd have to import it though:

Lots of positive reviews in chinese at the bottom!

Am I reading that right? $790 US for that monitor... before shipping?! Second link has it listed at $550 before shipping.

At that point, might as well go for the 24" LG Ultrafine made for Mac at $699 Canadian.

Seems like I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get an iMac.

Yes, it's strange that it's so pricey, yet it has over 600 reviews in China, so must be fairly popular there. From the photos accompanying the reviews it seems quite a few Chinese customers are using it with their Macs.
