You do realize the iPad is already foldable and there is even a youtube video of the guy on "Will it Blend" folding it so it will fit in his blender. Of course as was already mentioned in this thread, this would void your warranty. :D

I like that iSpine concept but I think the iPad is the first serious attempt to liberate us from the awful "L shaped" computer. I don't mind having an accessory that turns my iPad into a netbook for an hour or two at a time such as the clamshell case or an Apple BT keyboard along with a plate holder, but if I wanted an L shaped iThing, I think I would go for a Macbook Air.

Ok, so i carefully ran tape around
the center of my iPad (to eliminate
chip out) Fired up the table saw
with the 200 tooth plastics blade.
Set the center at 3.7" and ran the
iPad through. It came out perfect.
I then used an epoxy (fast drying)
to glue a clear piece of silicone, 2"
wide across the back attaching the
two pieces together. I cut up and
used my Belkin Clear Case for the
strip as it would no longer fit after
the mods. It folds with the BACK
together so when you fold it flat you
can barely see the seam. It looks
AWESOME an takes up half the space.
The problem is only the half with the
switch turns on, any ideas?

Sent from the left half of my iPad.

L-shape is not what I was thinking of: although folding a flat device produces an L, the L-shape concept you are mentioning consists in having the keyboard on one half, and the screen on the other. That is, the usual computer.

The concept I was trying to address is more like a V-shape, where the two halves have the same function (two parts of the same screen) but are conceived so that the overall device is more portable. That's all.

Since I saw this picture of iBooks, I thought about a hypothetical mechanical feature on future iPad versions.

iBooks is one of the principal iPad Apps, if not THE main App.

Not only is iBooks NOT "the" main app, it's not even one of the core pre-installed apps than can't be uninstalled from the iPad. If a user wants iBooks s/he has to download it.

What is so brilliant about the iPad is that it is whatever the user wants it to be. Making it a clamshell diminishes its utility.
