That seems a bit extreme. He may be right, but I've found with movies and TV shows, the meta data isn't updated in the iTunes database after I've made metatag edits to the files in the iTunes folder unless I then go back into iTunes, select the show of interest and Get Info on it (Command-I within iTunes). At that point, what is displayed in iTunes then updates visually. Maybe it works the same way with the Music folder items. Delete and reimport? I doubt it. But I haven't tested this idea with music.

Note: I don't actually do ANYTHING within the iTunes Get Info window -- only view the file, select the next one, and next one… and click on Cancel in the end. All data, including the parts that are not editable within iTunes such as MPAA rating, populates from what I added with my tag editor of choice (Subler).
You are correct, totally doable just using the Get Info method. But with 1100 files (and I'm not sure how many of those were modified but I got the impression it might be a lot), the easiest thing to do is to rebuild the library. It's also something that everyone that uses iTunes should learn and feel comfortable doing (she mentioned she was new to Mac's and iTunes). Occasionally the iTunes database may have to be rebuild do to corruptions that occur. Of course, having backups of all of your media is really really important!

Thank you both for your help.

I used the 'get info' option in the end because the only files that I'd had to fix were recent ones so were listed at the top - yes, a bit of a pain going into each one individually but they are fixed now and I'm happy.

When I feel a bit braver I'll look at deleting and reinstalling stuff.;)

Refreshing tags in iTunes

Hi,
After reading this thread I downloaded Tag Editor this afternoon and imported my itunes media files to it. I then 'fixed' all I wanted to fix (adding Album names, and ensuring 'title' & 'artist' were in the right columns etc) and then hit 'save'.

However, I've obviously missed something because when I go back to I-tunes nothing's fixed.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to apply the changes within i-tunes?

I noticed that, too. Before i just ignored it, because iTunes refreshes tags when playing, so it was ok for me - i always getting right tags for currently playing song.

So double-click on songs one by one does the trick - but it takes too long for dozens or hundreds of files, found couple of solutions,

Refreshing iTunes, after adding metadata (Apple Discussions)

Script for refrershing iTunes tags, with instructions for installation

How to force iTunes to re-scan your library

Also google gives a lot for query "iTunes refresh metadata"

Hope that helps

Jeez, I just tried 3 recommendations from this thread and it's tough to believe nothing matches the sheer power/flexibility of an MP3 tagger I was using on Windows 10 years ago.

Not often I come across things that Windows is better at.

Can't even remember the name of the program MP3Tag maybe. But it let user easily set templates/formulas for naming to and from the filename and it made sorting thousands of messy tracks much easier.

I still have yet to find anything that works like Tag&Rename on the windows side. I just received a code for a new program called "Tag Editor". Will see how well it does.

And no I do not work for them... I just really like their editor!

I saw the branch here for promo codes, but now it disappeared. Strange.
Where else can i get it ?

It should be in the Mac App store... ala you might have to spend a few bucks. I do not know if there are any reviews for it yet or not. I haven't had time to really sit down and play with it yet so I don't want to make any sort of recommendation, either good or bad.

I download a lot of music for DJing and need to keep it organized. It takes forever to manually rename hundreds of files to keep them uniform.

Tag Editor allows me to quickly keep everything organized and uniform.

Great solution !
