Well well well. It arrived. And did not work.

Only two of three monitors(a 23", a 24" a 32", all native HD), would run. 2 on minidisplayport adapters, 1 on direct HDMI. It was like a round-robin - any combination of plugging and unplugging resulted in only 2 of three monitors in different combinations turning on. Three hours with Applecare confirmed it was a hardware issue. Called in to sales to see what they can do about a fast replacement - turns out sales doesnt handle it, but the saleswoman was kind enough to tell me it was almost a three month waiting list if I had to order a new one. And then, at 3 am, she says she is going to tranfer me to the customer service people who can help me. Of course - it transfers to a closed office.

This entire experience is turning my apple sour. If they cannot make up for this in an expedient way, I may well go back to premiere and buy a good ol, reliable workhorse Dell.

P.S. welcome to the haiku wagon, cap'n

What?

They shipped you a defective computer, and the waiting list to get a working replacement is 3 months? I can't say I've ever heard that one before from Apple. I've ordered plenty of systems from them over the years and the very rare few that were DOA or stopped working shortly OOTB were replaced immediately without question.

Oh, if you're considering a Dell, I'd almost recommend an HP z800. They're great machines and very solidly built. Likewise, I've heard good things about Lenovo's warranty support these days- I recently witnessed them send out a repair man to my friends house to fix his workstation for free. The quality seems to be decent and he's happy with his machine as far as I know.

Do you live anywhere near a Apple Store. Maybe brining it in there and talking with a real human would be more effective

You are using a pair of adapters but do not specify what they are translating to: mini displayport to what?

If they are passive adapters (either to single link DVI or hdmi) then this is not supported. In that case your mac is not broken.

The graphics card driving displays can only support up to 2 simultaneous hdmi or single link dvi devices.

If the 3 displays you are trying to use are all hdmi, you will not be able to use all three of them. If one or more of them have DVI connectors, at least one of them will have to be connected using a usb powered, active DVI adapter.

waiting...endlessly

I ordered two stock 6 core MP on the last day of December (through CDW due to our workplace). Originally scheduled for February, then March, and now they are saying April 23rd.

So in the meantime the SSD in my current Mid 2010 MP died last week, and yesterday one of my two 27 inch monitors suddenly went black. The monitor is fine, but only one of my MiniDisplay ports will function at one time. I can get 1 monitor working from either port, but not 2 monitors. I ended up with one monitor running nicely at 2560x1440 and the other stuck at 1920x1080 running from the DVID port on the card.

I'm somewhat wondering if 10.9.2 had anything to do with the monitor issue, but since it happened suddenly (not after an update) I'm guessing a motherboard issue of some sort. I replaced my video card with an identical one from another computer and it showed exactly the same problem.

Between waiting for my nMP and watching my 2010 slowly drop dead I'm really getting pissed. But not much I can do. Tick tock...tick tock. Ugh.

So here's the latest in the continuing saga...

After finally resolving the monitor issue, there was another nagging problem. Once in a while, on boot, the nMP would mount, then boot and re-mount any drive on a FW800 line, running from an apple TB to FW adapter. Sometimes, when I booted, the computer would not see any WiFi device and there would be a red X over the menu icon, with the explanation that no hardware was attached. After a while, either one or the other would happen on boot - never both at once.

AppleCare only had a few possible solutions - a PRAM reset did nothing. Although creating a new account showed the Wifi card when it was created, it soon began disappearing on boot. And when the Wifi card was missing, the strange FW behavior resumed on the new account.

My replacement nMP should be here tomorrow. This time, its only taking 5 days to get the new unit.

Hey Cptn,

Thanks for the info on the HP. I might need to get something just to manage media in the near future, and with the right hacks that might work. I built a Leitch DPS based edit workstation on a Dell 'round the turn of the century, and it was an impressive machine. But if I just need something for multiple encoding and things best handled in automated batches, that could work.

Actually, the waiting time is only 5 days. I had to go through a number of calls and attempts for Applecare to figure it out, when I finally said - "hey, this is supposed to work out of the box. It didn't. Please send me a new box." They agreed. They weren't sure how long it would take, would make no guarantees other than it was in an expedited list and would be here within a month at the latest. They were very nice about the whole thing, and let me hold on to the hobbled Mac until the new one arrived ("we want to give you a day or two to transfer any files"). It shipped today for overnight, so I'll be putting it through its paces tomorrow.

I feel your pain. The waiting was a real bitch. But even though I have been playing with a hobbled computer for a few weeks, it will be worth the wait. Granted, I was upgrading from a G5 Quad (which I will argue was better for video/editing than the intel equivalent until the 2010 versions), so the difference was pretty dramatic for me. But its very responsive, and I was blown away by its RT playback when stacking six or seven effects on a clip in FCPX. A remarkable machine that is worth it if you can wait that long.Would be nice if the first one worked perfectly right out of the box; I only hope the second one does.

Maybe he meant "forsummer" instead of "prosumer"

In what world is this a prosumer machine? Not for every pro sure, but prosumer not a chance.

.............................
Couldn't be that he misspelled it and meant the delivery being in "summer"...
Instead of "prosumer" "forsummer"?
I suppose that even Austin could made it until summer...
