There are rumors of the Mini 5 having the A14. Last refresh got the A12, just like iPad 8th generation, with rumors of this one having a faster processor, which can only mean A13 or A14.

Do you guys think it's possible for the iPad 9th generation to get the A14?

In my book that would seriously hurt the iPad Air 4.

Maybe with an upgrade to the Air at the same time? Strategically one would want to sell the higher tier model so it needs to positively stick out still, somehow.

Rumors also point for 2022 to an upgrade for the Air, so that's why I think it would be weird for the ipad 8 to have the A14.

Either it gets A13 and maybe maintains 3GB RAM or it retains A12 and gets bumped up to 4GB RAM. I don't foresee it getting A14, since it seems too soon for the entry level to get that chip. It received A12 last year, which is a 2018 processor. The Mini 5 got the A12 in the spring of 2019, when it was still relatively new. The Mini gets the Air treatment, which is why it will get no less than A14 this year.

Yes, I think it is possible. I hope it doesn't happen because a 9th generation with an A14 and the current chassis and price points would be irresistible to me.... and so far I've been successful in my migration away from iPad. :D

I can. It's not wishful thinking... the base iPad is due for a RAM upgrade. My Galaxy Tab S6 which was released 2 years ago comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and cost as much as the base iPad 8th gen.

Yeah but iOS works differently than Android.

Of course. But RAM prices are the same regardless of the OS that will be using them. And if anything, Apple is in a better position to get a better price for RAM given the volume they're dealing with. So it is easily possible for Apple to bump up the base iPad to 4GB RAM and still be within their cost and revenue targets.

While A14 and 4gb would be an amazing deal for a base model. That would piss off a lot of the Air 4 owners lol

Don't really see why. It's already been around a year since the Air 4's launch. Didn't really see any 2019 Air 3 owners getting pissed off when the 2020 9th gen got A12/3GB.

That said, if Apple goes A14/4GB on the 9th gen, they really should release the Air 5 at the same time.

Mind, the 2018 6th gen A10/2GB and 2019 7th gen A10/3GB had the same chipset so it's also entirely possible that Apple goes a similar route for 8th gen to 9th gen.

Imo the base iPad will basically be the iPad Air 3. A12, 3GB RAM, and the "upgrade" from the current iPad is the laminated screen and thinner/lighter profile.
Meanwhile, the mini will get a re-design, thus still having differentiation at higher price point than the base iPad.

I believe it will mirror the upcoming iPhone SE 2022 on CPU, and Ram, so..

I expect iPad 9gen will feature iPad Air 3 design, A14, 4GB of ram, and hopefully 64gb of storage, but due to older design, lightning-port and only pencil 1 support and maybe lower base storage it will not compete directly with with the iPad Air 4 and especially not the upcoming Air 5 on design/specs.

But it will and should be the best value/option for most people out there (even with just the A13), just as the current iPad 8gen is. It is basically Apple‘s product to ensure total domination over the tablet market.

No i would not be annoyed at all. I believe products should get the best spec possible on release (within its price point), and not purposely gimped just to please those who purchased a higher cost option. A Ipad 9th Gen with A14 and 4 GB RAM would be incredible value and performance for a lot of people.

Apple does need to make 4GB the baseline for the iPad because even 4GB cause quite a lot of reloads when you move a lot from app to app and from tab to tab. And if they ever introduce external monitor support even 4GB would be very tight if you can use the external monitor and the iPad at the same time, both with different apps in split screen etc.... A12 instead is plenty fast. If past is any indication, it will be A12 and 4GB, with a laminated display. Apple cannot upgrade the base iPad too fast since there is a new one every single year. So A14 is for next year... And they need to milk lightning as long as possible...

I don’t expect them to introduce proper external monitor support on the entry level devices - and 20 years ago a Macs with 128 MB RAM could already run Apple’s 30 inch Cinema Display- RAM isn’t really the holdup here I think.

you may have misunderstood me on this. External monitor support does not require more RAM by itself, but if done like on a PC, or even a Samsung high end tablet, it enables a much more sophisticated multitasking than it's currently possible on iPad (4 or more separate apps at the same time, interacting).
Where Apple will put the entry line for this feature, if it ever comes, is anyone's guess...
