Is it supposed to be from the same menu that has "Install Cydia" and "Enable battery percentage" checked? I'm afraid there isn't an "Activate" box. There IS a "Deactivate" box however...

OK - it happened like the very first jailbreak that started this whole fiasco. It went up until the pineapple and progress bar, which made it to about 40% (just finished Flashing NOR and started Moving Applications) and then shut off.

However, I did check TU before I did it and managed to get this info which has never been there before:

Device model: MB496J/A - INVALID
Installed Firmware Version:
ECID (Dec): 1733758358413
ECID (Hex): 193AC0D138D
Serial Number: 888352F0Y7K

Anyway, now it just sits on the apple logo, but I can get it back to where it just sits on the itunes logo and demands a sim.

Alright! So, 0.9.6.rc16 got me through the jailbreak! After, iTunes asked me if I wanted use the backup of my old phone and I said yes - I assumed that was ok cuz the system stuff was done. Now it behaves normally and has Cydia, except the phone shuts off randomly (I had battery issues before, but not like this; like every few minutes, depending on what I'm doing) and there is a message on the screen saying "This phone cannot make or receive calls - Restore from iTunes". The wifi option in the settings is grayed out. Sometimes iTunes and the phone are restarting and doing things by themselves! TU doesn't give any new info (except saying that the phone is connected) and the phone's settings themselves confirm ios4.2.1, but Modem Firmware is blank. Bluetooth is out too. But, progress! What's next! Unlock? Redo?

Reflash the iPad BB with redsn0w, make sure you read the tutorial on iClarified.com

After that you can either use that or downgrade to 5.13.04 BB

Also read the tutorials on that before doing anything!

OK - attempting to reflash BB following this iClarified tutorial:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12947

I notice that this tutorial has me doing the jailbreak and the BB change in the same process, which was what dhlizard told me at the very beginning was something to be done in 2 separate processes, and maybe was the beginning of my whole problem.

Anyway, jailbreaking/baseband-updating with 0.9.6rc16, phone shut off RIGHT at the "flashing BB (don't interrupt!)" part, after the progress bar hung there for about a minute. Can you believe it...

So then when I try redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 again the program closes itself after the first click! Won't stay open.

So I download redsn0w 0.9.b5 and try again (the phone is still in it's menu-able/non-wifi mode). Phone shuts off at about the 20% "flashing NOR" part - AND when I finally get the phone to turn on again, there is no apple logo.

I start the process again from the very beginning, but can't get apple logo back, just glowing black. I try the old 0.9.14b2 again and during the phase where all the code rushes up the screen it repeats "Please Wait" about 20 times, line after line, then starts spewing code again ...only to shut off. No apple logo.

redsn0w 0.9.rc16 starts to work again, so I give it another shot: while waiting for reboot redsn0w suddenly is gone.

I'll try again from the beginning...

btw - after these failures the phone is in a state where it doesn't want to turn on - sometimes I can jailbreak through it, sometimes not.

Anybody? My phone keeps shutting itself off in the middle jailbreaks and baseband changes and getting itself into problem after problem. Should I try a new battery or just smash it to pieces?

if redsn0w doesn't work try sn0wbreeze for the ipad baseband upgrade, needs to be done on a windows machine, or virtual windows.

Did you ever manage to fix the phone? My iPhone 3G has a similar problem. It started rebooting several times a day so I tried reinstalling the firmware and now it's constantly stuck at the Apple logo and reboots. I've tried reinstalling custom firmware as well as stock for 3.1.2 up to 4.2.1
