I'm calling the cops
How should I do it? I don't have Applecare and I want them to send me a duel 2.3ghz machine after paying the difference. Should I tell my dad everything he needs to know and have him call? Or should I do it cause I am a kid. I just don't want a G5 that freezes after 2 hours of use. I am stil under parts and labor though. Any thoughts? I plan on calling today and I am pretty sure they are open until 6(I live in California).

-Please help quick! G5Unit

You call, tell them everything, and then have your dad ready to talk if they give you a hard time. If you're paying the difference with your dad's CC, then he'll need to do it anyway most likely.

So your daying I should talk first and then let my dad talk? I mean, how hi are the chances that they will give me the deal and should I wait for PM updates? I didn't even buy the PM for Apple, I got it from MicroCenter. Since I dont have applecare will this all work? I also dont have the box or anything(manuals yes)

I'm sorry to say but your chances of actually getting Apple to swap your machine for another model are pretty low. From my dealings with Apple I believe you have to have them repair a machine for the same problem 3 times before they will even consider swapping for a new model. If you don't have Apple Care your chances are probably even lower. Sorry!

I would say that it doesn't hurt to give them a call. Just have all your facts at hand. Be firm, but very polite. Since you know the information it would be best if you make the call. You could just have your Dad there for stand by and as advisor. Good luck. ;)

Calling Apple won't kill you. I called Apple when I was like 7 years old because my ISP (at the time Erols) told me to call them about a problem. Was on the phone for about 2-3 hours, but we got it fixed (good ol' system preferences getting corrupted in the ol' OS 8 and 7 days... *sigh*). Didn't owe Apple a penny. And I was way off warranty.

When you say you're "under parts and labor" do you mean Apple's warranty or MicroCenter's warranty?

If it's Apple, you might as well try calling. But if it's MicroCenter's, you probably have a small chance of saying it's not quite the machine you wanted and are returning it and want it replaced or something to that effect.

Just called and the first guy couldn't help me so he said he'd transfer me to Costomer Relations. Bad news is he transfered me to like Canada. The lady was French Canadian so she was very nice but she was only in the iPod department. But she helped me and she ended up saying in order to have a good chance a paying the difference for a better PM, I should go to an Apple store and have the check it out. Then come home call the REAL Customer Relations ad say I have tried everything including going to the apple store but nothing works, then I may have a better chance at them giving me a dicounted PM.

Save yourself a trip by calling again and claiming you've done everything you can, even going to an Apple store. :D Not sure if that'll work, but I don't think the Apple Store will help you out much considering Apple isn't admitting there's a problem.

if you bring it to the apple store they'll log it and when you call the tech on the phone they'll see the history of the machine and that it indeed was taken to the apple store. IE: if you didn't it will be obvious

A few things

Dude, I'm 13, and I've called the apple people a few hundred times. How old are you? Much more importantly, how computer savvy are you? If your dad is more computer savvy than you, I would let him talk. I happen to be the opposite with my dad, so I do both of our talking. Most Importantly, what is any kid doing with a dual 2.3 G5 tower? People wonder what I am doing with a 12" iBook, and the 2.3 costs at least double that? I'm not attacking you in any way, just curious. Don't answer if you don't want to, what a kid with a $2,500+ comp.?

I am 13. I am WAY more computer savvy than my dad. And I am really into movie editing and photoshop. I also have a really good job right now that I am taking full advantage of along with saving a bunch of money. The 1.8ghz was very fast but it has it's limits in gaming, After Effects and LARGE Photoshop files. I would even get a single 1.8Ghz(the one without the bug from 2003) but if I am going through the hassle of all this, I at least want to get something better out of it. I also want this compuer to last till my senior year.

Should I wait for PM updates? This would bring down pricces for sure which makes it cheaper for me :D also, should I leave my airport card and graphics card, memory, etc in the PM when I bring it to the apple store? And is that the only thing I should bring? Cause I just was wondering how to carry a 44 pund PM halfway through a mall to get to the store.

I was checking out Think Secret earlier today and it says that 10.4.3 is meant to address all of the issues with the 1.8 SP G5s locking up, if you don't do it soon you might just get some one installing an update for you and giving the machine straight back.

Quoting: http://thinksecret.com/news/0510briefly.html

...that a bigger priority for Mac OS X engineers involves correcting recently acknowledged issues with 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 systems. Apple is hoping to eliminate the issue and satiate frustrated owners of such systems...

yep apple is hopefully going to fix the troubles with the single G5s. And i have only heard of one case in which they bought back a machine and then the person paid the difference to get a newer better one. And that case was mine upgrading from a wacky iBook to a 12" powerbook :D

your SOL in my opinion on getting the dual 2.3

I have a dual processor G5, and have never noticed an issue... Is this problem only associated with the SP 1.8?

G5 Unit has a valid gripe, because his SP 1.8 has a KNOWN issue and he should not back down, even though it may be difficult to remain polite.

Even if Apple replaces his motherboard, that motherboard
could also develop problems after his machine is fully out of warranty. More than likely any replacement parts for this
out of production unit are back stock, if available at all.

This is precisely why he should work with Apple to get it resolved.
