Just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Go to "Users" and click on your folder; you should see a folder called "downloads." Just drag it onto your dock right of the dotted line.

Yeah, I needed to go to the name of my Mac (i.e. 'MacHome') and drag the Download folder from there, rather than the Download folder under 'Places' in Finder.

Thanks!!

I had the same problem.. I now have the downloads back in the dock, but it doesn't show most recent downloads or in a list, like before. I can't right click the Downloads in the dock, nor "long click" it so I can change the view..
It opens downloads in big bricks and one option "Open in finder"
Maybe it's because I have 10.8.3? Any solution to this?

I tried dragging the Downloads from Users, as well as the one in Finder. There I changed the settings to sort by date created but nothing seems to work.. :(

Try dragging it off the Dock again and re-adding it, using the instructions linked in post #35 of this thread. You certainly should be able to right-click anything on the Dock. Have you tried right-clicking anything else on the Dock?

Try restarting your Mac. That is a basic step in troubleshooting that resolves many minor issues.

If that doesn't work, delete the /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist file, then log out and log in again or open Terminal and enter the following command, followed by pressing the enter key.
killall Dock

1. Go to finder.
2. Select Downloads.
3. Drag Downloads to the right side of the line on the dock.
(Optional) 4. Right click downloads on the dock and click 'folder'.

After reading the first page of this thread, I became frustrated with the know-it-alls that smugly answer questions without fully understanding the question, therefore provide no help at all. Several others have answered the questions but they're in different posts. So here is a comprehensive answer on what to do when you accidentally delete the 'downloads' folder from your dock. I hope this helps:

*In Finder, click on your 'Users' folder
*Click and drag 'Downloads' onto your dock
*Right-click the 'Downloads' icon you just added to your dock
*Under 'Sort by', click 'Date Added'
*Right-click the 'Downloads' icon again
*Under 'View content as', click 'Fan'

Et voila. Good as new.

You Sir, Are a someone with a good understanding. Thanks a lot!

This is the most comprehensive and helpful answer that I've read. Not only did I get my folder back, but now I know how to restore the "fan" look again. Thank you stephmce. I actually registered for this forum just to say thanks! ;)

Putting Stacks back on the Dock

Hi all

I read the posts about doing this (I too, accidentally deleted it!) but I am afraid I am a bit Mac illiterate  Where do I find "Users"? Thanks so much for your help.

First click on Go on top. 2) click on download then Right click on download then select add to dock. 3) Right click on download from the dock click "1) Sort by : Date added -2) Display as: Folder 3) View Content as: Fan." And it will be the same way as it used to be. Good luck

Hey, I was looking for a solution to the same problem. Some of us still appreciate it! Golden advice. I'll repeat it for anyone else here:

*In Finder, click on your 'Users' folder
*Click and drag 'Downloads' onto your dock
*Right-click the 'Downloads' icon you just added to your dock
*Under 'Sort by', click 'Date Added'
*Right-click the 'Downloads' icon again
*Under 'View content as', click 'Fan'

I have followed the instructions above, but my Downloads folder won't enter the Dock. It will go beneath it, but that is all. Between Trash and Systems Preferences there is a line where Downloads used to be, also a line with arrows at both ends. I can't make it enter the Dock, and in trying I have made the Dock very small. I have it on the left as my screen is so much wider than long. Please help....
