Apple knows this. They are priming us to be used to the button before they make it more "complicated". Example: Swipe up to go home introduced in software before the launch of the iPhone X's removal of the home button to condition us before throwing us in the deep end. Apple sees us all as idiots. It is what it is. Also, they are saving the ability to double/triple click Action button as a selling point for the iPhone 16 line. Apple prioritizes their bottom line before user experience. Just from this fact, you already know iPhone 16 will be an extremely incremental upgrade since they're saving "double click the Action Button" as a headlining feature the same way they did with "Titanium" this time around.

I guess I'm the only person who has heard the new alert and ringtones in iOS 17 ;)

I have my phone un-muted when at home as I just leave it on a table somewhere and I have friends and family who will FaceTime me in the evenings.

During the day when I'm out it's usually on mute, although I tend to un-mute it while cycling as I won't notice the vibrations.

I don't wear a watch.

I don't actually use the mute switch (iPhone 11) as I control it all via Focus modes.

If you have a phone with action button you can actually turn on silent mode without completely silencing notifications. It’s really nice.
Cool. I am looking forward for this to evolve, I am still on my 13 PM. Hopefully when I upgrade in few years, it can do lot more than a mute switch.

Never understood the always on mute use case. When I’m home my phone isn’t always near me, so a sound helps me not miss calls/text.
Are you the type that’s always missing calls and returning them?
I also keep my phone muted all the time. For one thing, I'm on the younger side, and frankly, I don't get a lot of calls... Secondly, I have an apple watch and I make sure that the call notifications are mirrored to the watch.

My main reason for keeping it muted all the time is because quite frankly i get a lot of notifications all day with all the messaging and apps. I'd go nuts if my phone was dinging outloud all the time. I don't understand how people DON"T keep it on mute all the time.

I don't keep it on mute, but do have a lot of settings to manage notifications. and different things have different sounds, so I can prioritize whether I want to respond or not.

Used to be on mute all the time, but I find this works better for me now.

Shortcuts.
Thats the key here.
I have my action button open my saved shortcuts of which it displays about 10 or I can press to see more.
Silent mode is the first shortcut, but I have a bunch of other very useful shortcuts all within 1 press of the action button.

This for me is leagues ahead of the toggle switch.

You can even create a shortcut to automatically silence your phone based on events in a certain calendar for example. Or preset to silence at certain times of the day, or for example when you plugin your phone.

Shortcuts are very powerful and can automate a lot but the implementation is still a touch rigid. I'm sure this element once refined will be much more accessible to all and I would personally like to see more complex AND / OR logic easier to setup.

It’s leagues ahead, BUT look how much more time your new process is taking. Long press, search for shortcut, tap it. Sure…it’s not dreadful. Just the quick slider was monumental for what it did.

I don’t get a lot of calls either, but I also turn most notifications OFF. I don’t want every app that wants to notify me bothering me all day with stuff I don’t care about. All those things I just keep ‘badges’ on When my phone makes a sound, it’s something I need to take action on. I don’t tik or tok, tweet or face

I just made change to do this when I press it. Let’s see if I can adjust.

Can you explain useless? You never walked into a meeting, quickly mute. Go to a school, class, church, dinner, graduation, movie….literally anything that you need to mute your phone with literally no thought. That switch action, up/down could be done in any situation and you’d know immediately what was happening.

Many of us always have our phones on silent. I also almost always have my phone on me so I'm not worried about missing calls. Don't get many calls tbh. Usually scammers

OMG OP has to learn a haptic feel, how will they survive this absolute travesty.... Prayers up for you OP

I have a shortcut that launches the camera in video if in landscaperight orientation, otherwise, it acts as a mute toggle.
You can however program any of the other 5 orientations to do other things if you wish.
I launched the camera in video since the lockscreen swipe or button launch the camera for photo.

Well. There is is right lol. That's your answer. Other people just mute their phones, You actually turn the notifs off. That's the crux.

I don't understand how people DON"T keep it on mute all the time.

I don't carry my phone with me at home, so if my phone is muted I would miss. Sometimes I work from home and I forward my desk phone to my cell and need to hear it.

As for app notifications, I keep everything turned off except for calls, imessage/facebook messenger, and weather alerts.. I hate, hate, hate, hate push notifications.

Odd…I thought it had a nice click when set. Have not tried widget you’re referring to. Which?
It's the accessibility widget that puts the dot on your screen. I check my phone before muting anyway, just in case, so having the screen activate to tap the dot isn't an issue for me. I also use a case on my phone so reaching the mute switch is basically impossible one handed.

How do you hear your phone ringing when it‘s always muted??? Do you carry it in your (tight) pocket at all times? Do all of you have Apple Watches to notify you??
I'll do you one better. If I forget to add a sound to an alarm, it'll still wake me up if I remembered to set the vibrate option. More, I have to rotate songs I use for my alarms because I'll ignore them after a while. I never ignore the phone vibrating.

Love it! Replaces a pointless mute switch (I’m always in mute/vibrate) and gives me choices as to what it’s for. Can still be a mute button, although I agree it functions less well in that regard than the previous mute switch.
