So I've noticed that when I hold the home button to activate Siri, it just vibrates. There's no sound like before. The same thing happens when I use voice dictation in messages. Is this a new "feature" or am I missing something in settings?

Honestly, I prefer the audible cue that it's been activated. Especially when I'm in the car and responding to a text via voice. Hearing the "ding" lets me know it's activated.

Wish there was a toggle for it.

Well it's pretty easy to feel the vibrate for it. Plus you shouldn't be texting and driving anyways.

Personally I prefer the vibrate. The first time I used it and noticed the change I was like "ooh, nice!". The old sound was kind of annoying.

That's what the dictation was for. Ask Siri what the message said, dictate a response, etc..

Anyway, that's off topic. I was just curious if anyone else had noticed.

I tested "hey Siri" (since you wouldn't be holding the phone in that case) it still had the closing sound with that but no opening sound. (Probably just missing in this build.)

My guess is vibrate for if you actually press and hold the home button and the old sound still happens if you use "hey Siri". I believe hey Siri works if plugged in a car.

According to the Bug-Fixes thread:

  • iPhone 6 - Siri will vibrate, but will not play the distinctive sound. It will, however, play the sound when headphones are connected or connected to a bluetooth speaker.
Given that it works with other speakers it does seem likely that it's absence is simply a bug.

A shame, that sound is what keeps me from using Siri most of the time. I was happy it seemed to be gone but it looks like that may not last.

It never makes a sound on Apple Watch, so I'd figured this was intended. I much prefer it, because oftentimes i'd hit the button and the sound would delay or distort if something else is going on in the foreground that requires lots of resources. That aways bugged me (pun).

The missing audible feedback is really telling. I constantly feel like Siri isn’t ready. I do think that this is a bug.

That's a shame it's a bug. I was quite pleased the first time I activated Siri on iOS 9 public beta and didn't have the obnoxious sound.

I think it must just be a bug with the built in speaker and Siri. There is a 'beep' when I activated Siri in the car, connected via bluetooth.

I am using an iPad Air and I get the sound. From reading the thread, I guess you are talking about an iPhone. Does your Mail App work? Mail crashes on a first gen Air.

I added that to the bug fixes thread, and I'm starting to think it might not be a bug, but intended design.

When you have your phone in your hand you're going to feel the vibrations, letting you know Siri was activated. The sound plays on the iPad because it has no way to vibrate. The sound also plays with headphones and bluetooth because most likely your phone won't be in your hand.

There is a setting for Siri to turn on or off audio feedback

That option doesn't apply to this situation. Previously it did, but now on iPhone it only toggles wether you get Siri actually talking or not. Sound won't play over the phone speaker regardless of that setting.

At first it was spotty. Deleting a mail would immediately show that same mail again like I never deleted it. It's kinda hard to explain, but it was glitchy. Now it seems to be working fine on my phone.

On my iPad Air, I've had issues where the content of the mail message took up the entire mail app, which was weird looking. It seems to have cleared up today though and I'm not sure why.

I hope so and that's what I thought earlier in the thread until someone brought it up that it was posted in the bug thread.

To me it makes sense for vibrate when actually using the home button to activate. And sound when on BT or using "hey Siri". (Like you said because it probably isn't in hand in those situations.)

I can't get mail to open at all on my iPad air. I reported it. I get nothing, a white screen then it closes. I do however still get notifications, but when I follow them the mail app opens and crashes again.
Off topic, but notes is stuttery as hell.

Not sure if you know this, but when you say 'hey Siri' you can start speaking immediately. You don't actually have to wait, as it'll start transcribing txt, commands, etc immediately. Definitely useful for driving! A toggle would be nice though. My phone is generally on ring, and I don't have vibrate on with ring. I only use vibrate on silent mode, so it's definitely odd pressing the home button and getting no audible cue...but for 'hey Siri' I suppose it doesn't matter.

I was thinking this would be to make Siri more in parody with the Apple Watch, but some other things I am seeing says it may be a bug. We will have to wait and see what future betas bring.

I have the same issue with 9.1 beta. I thought that the volume was turned down on Siri or that I disabled the ding-ding sound that tells me that I can speak. I checked my settings and the volume for her voice is maxed and the prompt is set to only.

Glad I am not the only one! At first I had not sound or vibration. I tried to turn up the Siri volume as I knew it was independent to the other volume setting. I di note it was working on my car BT and External BT speakers. Last night out of desperation I reset All Settings and that at least got me the vibration when summoning Siri (it also fixed an issue where my 6+ would not go into landscape on the home screen despite toggling the orientation lock on and/or off).
