Talk me down from the cliff. I’d like to hear stories. I’d like to connect with people who have something intelligent to say regarding this. I’d like a little peace of mind. How did you break the cycle?
Thanks for the input.

My advice is to to break the cycle is to spent less time on online forums :)

There is always something better. Only buy a computer if you need one and the one you can afford and don't obsess too much about it.

If you think you might lack self control (eg. have excessive urge to buy expensive things you don't need and then having feelings of guilt) it could be a mental health issue, talk to a specialist. Do not seek help from random folks online :)

Will you be really be able to tell the difference between the base i5 27” iMac and what you purchased? Take the money you’d save and invest it wisely.

I paid $2300, including shipping, for my 2009 5,1 Mac Pro 41/2 years ago and added the drives and later some more memory. I plan on using it for at least two more years.

In 1997, I debated whether I should buy a new 250 MHz PowerPC 603e-based Power Macintosh 6500 to replace my struggling, 20 MHz Motorola 68LC040-based Macintosh Centris 610, or instead buy US $2,500 worth of Apple stock, which was then trading at US $12.75 a share.

Apple shares have since split 2x2x7-fold and increased 439 times in value. That US $2,500 would be worth US $1,097,600 right now!

I bought the Power Mac, of course. :p

Curious about how old you are? When I got into my 30s a few years ago, I started caring less. My signature might not reflect that, but I just underwent a huge upgrade cycle, some unplanned for various reasons since I usually pass down tech in my family because my wife doesn't give a crap but needs something that works. Anyway, the last Mac I bought before this was a 2012 MBP (the 2015 MBP is my work machine). It was still fun to see and play with new machines as they would come out. Just go to the store and play with it, or if you know a friend or coworker who has one. Be disciplined and don't buy it. Have a date in mind when you'll next upgrade (4, 6, 8 years or whatever) and think about how much better yours will be than whatever is coming out now. Then you can be excited when it's your turn to upgrade. Just watch the buyers guide and forums and news and don't buy at a stupid time. I just don't think Macs need to be updated as often because they don't increase in speed as quickly. Now is a good time to upgrade because we're finally getting some decent performance increases with these six and eight core CPUs after being stuck in quad-core hell since 2011. My threshold for upgrading was them releasing a 6-core 5K iMac, even better if they offered a faster GPU, so of course I went straight for the 8-core Vega 48 like you and I'm happy. This thing should last a long time. It's faster than only a few other Macs in existence.
