Hi all,

Now that my Mac Pro is finally here, I've begun kitting it out. Installed my SSD PCIe card and 96GB OWC RAM kit which all looks to be working well. Got a dual 2.5-inch SATA Sedna PCIe card coming later today, will pop my 1TB Win10 gaming drive in there.

I'm coming off a homebuilt system that I upgraded a bit over 6 months ago with a Radeon 5700 XT OC, and I'm considering adding it to my Mac Pro to augment the BTO W5700X my system has.

Has anyone done something similar?

The alternative is I just sell it off, but if it's going to provide some benefit I might as well buy the Belkin cable kit and throw it in.

My main workflow is FCP X with Canon Cinema Raw Light footage (4K from C200, 5.5K from 1DX III, soon to be 8K from EOS R5).

You will be able to use the latest Radeon drivers with the 5700XT for gaming in windows. That’s a benefit I guess, although it’s kind of a waste of electricity.

Yes that is occurring to me, as the W5700X drivers don't seem to be doing me any favours for gaming so far.

I'm thinking worst-case I order the cables (they're overpriced, but not that expensive so...) and test it all out, and I can return them if I'm not getting the benefit.

Just curious but if you have 2 separate GPU’s, can you disable one in both Mac OS and Windows OS? In this case disable to run W5700X on Boot Camp and disable 5700XT on Mac OS, so you can save electricity and preserve more life out of those GPU’s?

Doubtful, and besides the electricity usage when idle would be minimal and I don’t think preserving the life on them is really a thing outside of mining rigs.

My Belkin cable kit came today but didn’t get a chance to get it installed. Aiming to add my 5700 XT tomorrow arvo.

Give it a try and let us know. That'll be very helpful!

Installed the card this afternoon, and it's working, though not really seeing any boost in FCPX. Background rendering a timeline, I'm seeing good utilisation of the W5700X, but the 5700XT isn't doing squat.

Going to switch to Bootcamp and see if my COD MW problems are resolved using the 5700XT.

Just to bump this thread while I wait for mine. Is there a need to keep the original GPU in there? Why not take it out and replace with a different card? I’ve ordered the new 5500 GPU option but if I’m going to add in my own GPU then I don’t need to keep the 5500 in there?

I don’t think you need to keep the original in there.

I can boot my machine with just the 5700XT connected to a monitor and I still get a boot screen too.

AMD just released new bootcamp drivers for Mac pros, have you tried those yet? The weird texture glitches were resolved with the new official bootcamp drivers.

Given up on using the MP for games, I'm just going to sort myself out with a gaming PC at some point soon.

As for making use of the two GPUs, I bought DaVinci Studio today which includes multi-GPU support, and it certainly seems to be working!

Been test exporting a 90 second clip, basically a single ProRes file with some noise reduction applied.

With just the W5700X it took 2 mins 44 sec, and with both it dropped to 2 mins 9 seconds.

Its a good idea in my opinion to have a separate gaming pc - from your mac pro work station.

You don't need to keep the Apple supplied GPU for any reason.

I'm running an Aorus RX5700XT in my NcMP. When first installed I was running DP to DP and I also had a boot screen. I replaced that monitor with the Apple recommended LG UltraFine 4K monitor. That monitor only has a USB-C input. I am running with a Monoprice Bidirectional USB Type-C to DisplayPort Cable. With that configuration I lost the boot screen. I have no idea why.

I'd been waiting for Octane render to use the two RX580s in my Mac Pro, plus a 5700 XT. Octane doesn't support the 5xx series because it's not in Apple's drivers, so we were forced to buy this rubbish, low-end GPU and Apple can't even be bothered to support it. I can already see a handful on eBay and – understandably – no-one's buying. I mean, why would they?

I use the non-MPX RX580 to drive my monitor, but the 580X MPX module may as well go in the bin. Total waste of money. I'm hoping pick up another 5700 XT while we wait for AMD's new GPUs to arrive.

I ordered mine with the new (base) GPU, but I've already ordered a WX9100 to replace it.... think I'll just be taking it out and replacing it with the 9100

Yeah I can’t see any reason you’d want to keep the 580X in unless you need to run a Thunderbolt 3 display.

not the 580, the 5500 (have ordered more RAM and the 4TB card from OWC, plus the 9100, and the Pegasus 8TB option

^^^^The base GPU is still the 580X, the W5500X is a $200. option. I'm running mine with an Aorus RX5700XT. I had pulled the 580X, but reinstalled it last week. My 5700XT was not providing a boot screen with a bidirectional cable and an LG UltraFine monitor with a USB-C input.

My boot screens with the 5700XT were running four screens - two displayport/displayport cables, 2 HDMI/HDMI cables, and one displayport->HDMI adaptor. (My 5700XT Red Devil had the pretty standard 3 displayport outputs, and a single HDMI). So, success with no USB-C connections.

Does that match your experience when you were having a boot screen with your 5700XT?

^^^^When I ran the 5700XT DP to DP with my old monitor, I did indeed have a boot screen. But as I said I lost it when I switched to the UltraFine USB-C connection and the bidirectional cable (DP to USB-C).

For what it's worth the new drivers did nothing for me, still broken.
From the conversation I still did not understand what problems the W5700X had in the bootcamp?

I am considering a similar Mac Pro configuration for working with EOS R5 materials and running a few games through the bootcamp in my spare time.

Call of Duty experiencing all sorts of graphics corruption with the W5700X.

To be honest, if the updated iMac had been out when I was considering the Mac Pro I would have given it a try first. 10-core i9, 16GB 5700XT and built-in 5K display for less than half my Mac Pro would have been seriously tempting!
