This isn't even remotely true. An SSD on the J2I carrier will be limited to SATA3 speeds, which is 6Gbits/sec. An NVMe running at full tilt can hit anywhere from 24-32Gbits/sec depending on the model. They're literally 4-5 times faster than SATA3 drives.

Almost anything would be faster than the surveillance spinner it ships with. The bar is much lower than NVMe drives.

But that wasn't what I was replying to. The person I quoted asked the folks at Promise:

how an SSD in the J2i would compare in terms of speed with an NVMe M2 PCIe card

and they were apparently told the SSD in the carrier would be "faster". Which is comically false.

Exactly.... 👍

Yeah, I totally agree. He was either high or confusing the J2i with the RAID module.

Add me to the list of Samsung 860 QVO victims... mine (the 2TB version) worked fine for a while, in the ODD bay then on a dedicated SATA3 PCIe card.

I've now experienced runtime disconnections that took a reboot to cure (so far). Needless to say I've lost all trust in this disk to store my data.

Any recommended alternative (besides going back to HDD)? Should I avoid any 3D NAND SSD? I only paid 169€ for this SSD and prices have gone up again... I start having second thoughts about putting much more money in my aging cMP...

Several 2TB EVO 860’s have been fine for at least 12-18 months and may be purchasing more in 2020. Had them internally in SATA sleds for awhile without issue. Moved them to a USB-C 10Gbps multi-drive bay recently and no issues. Faster read/write performance externally and around 50-100MB/s faster than Apricorn Velocity Duo X2.

PERSONALLY do not trust them. Samsung EVO’s have performed well with Macs for a long time. Newest generation EVO 860’s are some of the best SATA SSDs for the price. The PRO models are always “better” but implement standard data backup strategies and it’s not a big deal.
