So I followed the instructions in reply #5, but it wouldn't let me perform the first of the two commands, since this is not a virtual machine. However, I ran the second of the two, turned the rootless back on, rebooted, and then it allowed the install to go forward. I'm waiting for it to finish, so not sure how well CS5 will perform once install is complete, but I am optimistic. I'll post the results here after I test it.

Update: Illustrator seems to work, except that I am having the same issue with the whole thing crashing when trying to use the eyedropper tool, as mentioned in another comment. Rather annoying, but I can probably work around it if I have to. Anyone else found a fix for that?

Stop! Just install the Java 6 runtime mentioned in the post above - supplied by Apple. NO NEED to go through all this terminal hacking!

I have CS5.5 on my Mid-2012 cMP and it works just fine with El Capitan (provided you install the Java runtime mentioned above in this thread).

Thank you for that feedback. I have the CDs for it, will do the install tonight, hopefully. Is it better to install the Java version mentioned before hand? Any tips there as to the sequence of install steps.

If you install it before installing CS, everything will go smooth ;) - If you don't you'll get an error message saying "this software needs a Java runtime etc...." No biggie. :) Once Java is intalled, CS5.5 will run perfectly fine.

I have adobe 5.5 production premium and managed to get it installed on elcapitan after installing java 6 but The longer I used each app the longer it was quite clear that it was not supported anymore. Various tools didnt work some seldom used menus crash. Things like fonts menu doesnt show up in illustrator. although there is a fix for this there are other errors in illustrator.

On the surface adobe 5.5 seems fine after java 6 but thats not the case the longer you use each application. I would not want to depend on its current condition for real work. I switched to cloud because random crashes are NOT cool.

No question the single most important 'feature' of any video editing software is that it be as stable and virtually crash proof. Without that, its effectively useless.

any feedback? Thanks

yeah it works on el captain but its a bit buggy with the eye dropper tool on the canvas. Overall the speed el captain and major improvements on the system is almost a bad idea, not worth the trouble of downgrading.

so my advice is get a newer CS or install the old 5.5 CS on the newest OS. If you have problems with the 5.5 CS you may have need of downloading java 6 runtime. it doesn't come pre-installed.

Also if the fonts don't show when you hit the drop down under paragraph or text selector.. --> the easy fix for this is to go under accessibility options and check the box for increase contrast. but this usually means you have a font that is in conflict with the default os font. "San Francisco" since the update its been added as a new default font for all mac os.

Bought a new Imac today with El Capitan. Unfortunately Im using adobe cs5 and tried to install it; I download a install fmg from the adobe site, but when I tried to install I got the message that the installer was corrupt/damaged. I tried the sam on and older mac and there was no such message. I installed the Java downloaded from Apple, as mentionewd abobe but still cannot install the file. Any known issue?

I'm running CS5.5 Creative Suite under 10.11.2 and it works well (with proper Java of course). Dreamweaver crashes sometimes when quitting but otherwise is stable. Illustrator and PS seem as solid as ever. Even Quicken 2007 and Bias Peak Pro work fine!

The problem with older apps is, although many run well if already on the hard drive, the installers often don't work under 10.11. So you need to use Apple Migration to transfer them from your prior system disk/Mac if you bought a new computer. I cloned my old OS drive on an external and used it to transfer all my old apps to a new iMac. Didn't even have to input serial numbers as that info was transferred too (except for Finale 2012). Also saves a lot of time over using old DVD install disks and installing each app separately.

Will a time machine back-up do or do I need to do a clone some other way?

Reuinstalled El Cap on my imac and transferred a TM-backup from my previous computer. I have CS 5 and they don't work that great, keep crashing etc. Did install Java 6 as mentioned. Is it solvable?

I have read many, many forum posts on Apple Support, Adobe Forums, here, and others. El Capitan breaks CS5/6. It may limp along but it will not work reliably any longer. My understanding is that downgrading to Yosemite or previous will restore functionality, but I have not personally attempted it.

So far 10.11.4 has been the most stable with CS5.5. PS is near 100% reliable and tools are fine. Dreamweaver is normally fine but often crashes when closing the app. I haven't used Illustrator enough to judge (PS gets used daily) but it seems to work okay. Premier Elements and Arobat Pro are 100% functional as well. Some of the earlier El Capitan variants were very crash prone so things have gotten much better for me.

PS CS6 has worked fine for me since the inception of EL Cap. The only real problem I have is with Bridge. I have both Bridge CS6 and Bridge CC installed, and neither will download pics from my Canon 7D. The latest Bridge does have a new download menu item "Download From Device", and that will download from the camera, but only the jpg, not the RAW file. And unlike Download from Camera it does not place the images in a folder. There is a thread about this issue on the Adobe Forums, but from what I can tell Adobe really doesn't give a darn about fixing this, IMO, major problem.

Can't you download from the card via a card reader?

^^^^I don't use a card reader, but reports in the Adobe forum say that is not possible either.

You can always drag 'n drop from the card to a folder of your choice and access said folder from within PS. I've been doing this for decades mainly because I use multiple photo apps--PS, Aperture, Affinity, DDP, etc.--and need to control where the RAW file is stored.

App Q&A testing by request.
Just as annecotal add...I did a fresh install of 10.11.3 then installed CS6 and have had no issues with Photoshop or Bridge (only 2 I've tried since ). I only use bridge for file organization, though.

^^^^As I posted above, Bridge CS6 & CC and PS C6 works just fine, EXCEPT for the "Get Photos from Camera" function. I even tried it with the trial version of PS CC, and still no Camera recognized. And, as I said, Adobe apparently has no interest in fixing it.

Hi there,
Some reassuring info'!
After downloading the combo 10.11.5 update and installing it on my 27" Retina 5K, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 2014 iMac, I have had no problems whatsoever - Photoshop CS5.1 works perfectly as does Dreamweaver CS6 and CS3, although I do not use Illustrator or InDesign.
I did however download and install Java SE 8 DMG sometime ago.

By the way, I refuse to buy into the monthly 'rental' scheme from Adobe - it appears to be hugely expensive over long periods!
