Canva is the one that bought Affinity.
OP is referring to Photomator, not Affinity. Canva bought Affinity, Apple bought Photomator and Pixelmator.Canva is the one that bought Affinity.
Once a software becomes an industry standard, the devs rest on their laurels and jack up the cost. If you're in such industries, it's cost of doing business unfortunately. Not that Adobe was "cheap" prior to CC.Unfortunately Adobe apps remain dominant among pros because that is what we all learned and shared. So folks working full time designing just pay Adobe every month because they must. In my case I now spend far less monthly hours on design issues so I can do without Adobe. Affinity apps are plenty competent and do not disable one's intellectual property when a monthly payment is missed. Also the cost of Affinity is much, much less, but cost is not why I personally left Adobe.
I tried to switch. But, to my dismay, it was too hard to change my workflow after 20+ years of using Photoshop 😤. Affinity is great! Alas... not for me.Anyone made the switch from Adobe CC to Affinity 2 ?
Getting tired of paying continual subscription fees with Adobe, and wondering if Affinity is a viable solution
Any pros / cons, catches?
TIA for any advice / insights
Yes, Apple acquired Pixelmator.Didn't Apple just acquire them? (I hope I am wrong.)
Yes GIMP is very good and used to be free. I found it hard to understand coming from a decade+ of PS. Never heard of Seashore until just now.GIMP or Seashore are good enough for 95% of the population. No need to pay money and no need for subscription taxes.
What do you mean GIMP "used to be free"? It is free and always will be. Don't buy it from third-party parasites.Yes GIMP is very good and used to be free. I found it hard to understand coming from a decade+ of PS. Never heard of Seashore until just now.
Thanks for the replies, but the query is more than just photo related applications, ie. Illustrator and Indesign alternatives..
Amen, Brother ;(This is why we can't have nice things...
Does PDF Expert have an equivalent to Acrobat's output preview - an ability to check ink densities and overprints (and other print production tools)? The full power of Adobe Acrobat is Adobe Acrobat. The option that I prefer to use in place of Acrobat is PDF Expert, you can find in the Mac App Store. I like it better then the other app I was using for that functionality and it is a one time purchase, which is the only option to me.
For print production, Adobe is it. PDF Expert (like other middle priced tools) is mostly a PDF creator/editor.Does PDF Expert have an equivalent to Acrobat's output preview - an ability to check ink densities and overprints (and other print production tools)?
With having Affinity Publisher I would have full preflight before making the PDF in the first place. No real need for a separate preflight app.Does PDF Expert have an equivalent to Acrobat's output preview - an ability to check ink densities and overprints (and other print production tools)?
Thank you for the detailed reply (and yours too gilby101), most useful. With having Affinity Publisher I would have full preflight before making the PDF in the first place. No real need for a separate preflight app.
For print production, Adobe Acrobat is considered the bare minimum if you have no other apps that do that kind of work.
Everything else that has prepress abilities are made for businesses and only have subscriptions. Many that are doing prepress go for Foxit, PACKZ or ArtPro+ (ArtPro+ makes Adobe look cheap and lacking LOL). I just needed good solid PDF editing abilities and a pay once option, not prepress features.
I found it an upgrade from the older version of PDFpenPro that was taken over by Nitro and I wasn't impressed with the new owners or the app compared to PDF Expert.
There are over 100 PDF apps from cheap nothings to ArtPro+ which is considered the gold standard with a price to match it and there may be some options that I missed that might have print production tools in a cheaper package. Just too many to sort through for my limited needs for just editing PDFs.
There is also other Mac apps that do just the print production part but I have lost the links to those. They are out there somewhere I just don't remember exactly where at the moment. Also, some companies have you install a preflight app they made just for that purpose, before you send them the files from that app: https://accuformprint.com/online-tools/pdf-preflight/index.html.
