Due to issues with my 7+, I have moved to Android. I looked at the Note 8 (have owned the Note 5 and 4).
They are all great devices. After using an Android device for almost a month now, I miss the ability to move from phone to tablet to MB when using iMessage the most.
That said, my current experience with Android has been significantly better (less crashes and issues) than I experienced with my 7+.

I did not go with a Note 8, instead I went with the Razer. If you are interested I have a lengthy review posted here.

Home screen? Not sure I follow the process you're asking about.

If I have an app on the screen when the phone locks, the app is still on the screen next time I unlock the phone.
If I'm trying to reply to a message from the notifications on the lock screen and I unlock the phone, the app for that notification will take over the screen, or the notification shade will until I'm done composing and sending the message (depends on the app).
If I had no app on-screen when the phone locked and I'm not attempting to reply to a notification from the lockscreen, if I unlock the phone it takes me to whichever homescreen panel I was on prior to the phone locking.

What I meant is, when I receive an iMessage or text and my phone is locked I simply 3D Touch the notification and reply straight there without even unlocking the phone. On other devices you can swipe right and click reply which pretty much does the same thing without 3D touch. I find this really useful and fast responding

Hi sorry I missed your reply. I would be interested in reading your lengthy review if you don't mind posting please.

Also I read somewhere the other day there is an app that you can use on android phones for iMessages. It relays through your MB. I'm not 100% sure on the app or remember the name but nothing Google can't sort out. It might help you though.

Try each phone in the store, play with the system, with the apps, with scrolling, etc. Only way to find out which one you prefer the feeling of.
