Advice re: iMac

I am pretty sure that you can bring it aboard as a carry on item (call the airline and check to see if this will be okay first). On my recent trip to Miami, Florida I brought two laptops with me (iBook G4 & MacBook Pro) so I am pretty sure you could bring one iMac onboard with you.

Well, Dubai (and the country itself) is tax free. So I assume I won't have to pay extra for duty tax? I'll make sure to double check, though.

Applecare is worldwide for laptops only, for desktops they are country specific. There was a previous poster on MR forums who brought his iMac from US to the UK and got hit by exactly this when he tried to send it in for servicing.

I am not too sure if the normal warranty coverage is country specific as well, but Applecare is definitely out (ie: you can't buy Applecare from Apple US and have it work in the UK for desktops)

I've just checked Apple's webpage out re: Applecare and and I'm afraid that Desktops aren't covered worldwide. But if I buy Applecare from Dubai, will it be valid? Will it cover the iMac?

A different place- Lebanon, PA area code 17042. It is near Hershey and Harrisburg if that gives you a better idea of where I reside.

Applecare bought in Dubai should be valid for a desktop computer bought in Dubai but not for one that was bought in Hong Kong

That's a shame. So what happens to people who move to a different country with their desktop Macs? Do they automatically lose their warranty?

yes, well, I suspect that a lot of people faced with such a move sell their desktops before they move.

They don't really loose it, the computer could be shipped back to it's original homeland for warranty service after all......not the cheapest solution of course

Around a $1,000 for the 20 inch. And I'm only planning to buy it in Hong Kong because I'm going there anyways. If I were to go to another country for my vacation I would probably buy from there too.
