iPhone XS Max which I have is more a computer than any other iPhone before it for the simple reason the size of the screen makes so many things possible, business wise I could just run off this iPhone XS Max but I still own a MacBook Air hooked up to an LG ultra wide monitor but really I could do away with the MacBook if I really wanted to. Size matters when you do business. iPhone XS Max isn’t a toy.

It seems to me, you want to ignore what others have struggled with Face ID, when it’s not perfect. When laying down, face ID does not always lock successfully, that’s been a known issue for quite some time. It’s not ‘user error’, that’s known as a ‘potential drawback’ to this new technology. Can I make the same insinuation if somebody has damp fingers and they use touch ID, and their phone won’t unlock, is that ‘User error?’ No. That would just be known as a drawback to that specific technology.

TouchID & moisture are accepted not to work well together. It was the limitations of the tech & I accepted it, despite it being frustrating.

If they include both TouchID on the back of the device & FaceID in the future then everyone will be happy but I can't see it happening.

Some people struggle with FaceID because they are not using it properly. ...That's not a tech issue, it's user error.

I have trouble with Face ID too. I have difficulty unlocking my phone if I'm trying to check something from bed. It doesn't work when it's held too close to my face. There's a sweet spot where it'll unlock. I don't always find it and just resort to punching in my passcode.

Calling that user error is a real clever way of not admitting that it doesn't work under some conditions. Whether it's really user error or not is kinda pointless. The point is that it's not performing better than the tech that it replaced for my specific use case. The new and improved feature introduced friction into my use case.

Your mileage may vary and I'm not going to suggest that my view is superior. I'm only going to say that my view isn't wrong and isn't less than yours.

Anyway, I don't like Face ID, but I'm not going to throw a tantrum over that they took away Touch ID in favor of it. It is what it is.

I have no problems with my iPhone XS Max laying in bed. I was surprised it worked so seamlessly after reading posts like yours.

Wow what a thread. I like touch id but my fingerprints ... I have dry skin so my finger prints cracked a lot and this affected touch id. I was one of those people who if I washed my hands or exercised, I couldn't unlock my phone with a fingerprint. But I think it's my not so normal fingers.

Face ID - I absolutely love. I realize I'm not supporting some of my favorite posters here by saying this but, works for me very well and I love it. :p But my mis-shapen head and beard probably help vs most who have normal faces.

This thread is hilarious . Yep because of Face ID and the all screen design iPhone X and any phone with a notch are destroying society (but thank god the 4.7” phones are here to save us).

I do think there are concerns with smartphone usage, and distracted driving. My friends now ex-wife is addicted to her phone and sometimes ignores her kids to be on her phone which is definitely a problem. But she has an LG phone with no notch.

Weird advocacy much?

We’ve gone a bit crazy with many seemingly feeling the need or entitlement to upgrade something perfectly suitable on the basis of status alone. There’s probably a character flaw there.

However, I do not think that having a modern iPhone is any problem at all. It is not in the having or not having. Problems arise from the love of money, not money itself. That idiom translates here.

Then OP goes and contradicts themself by stating that superior security is insulting because it doesn’t provide an easier experience. Non sequitur.

At the risk of getting slammed on here...

I think I KIND OF get what dude means.

But maybe not. I don’t know lol.

But the way I kind of see it, and I’ll say it poetic form my way, it’s like:

“Yo these iPhones be addicting man like why we need all these features ima get back to the older iPhones cause they do the same things but ain’t as addicting yo”

In summary,

Maybe it’s true I can check Instagram on an older iPhone and tap likes for whoever’s posts I need and then put the iPhone in my pocket and live life. But now that I got this fancy iPhone X that’s so BUTTER ima just sit on IG all day and feel bad my life ain’t as good as so many of these dudes on IG.

Maybe something like that idk.

And that’s fine but to place the complete blame of addiction to the X line and going to a smaller iPhone is like saying I gave up Budweiser for Bud Light because I am addicted. Doesn’t really make sense.

I’m no expert on this, but I can say that for me personally, I use my iPhone X a lot more than I did my other iPhones.

Ugh especially with those two beer brands. #beersnob #decadence #beerfordecadentbread

This is one of the more entertaining threads on the iPhone forum for awhile. On a serious note I can see the value of FaceID for many people and am pretty sure both it an TouchID as Apple did it are among the better implemented versions in the tech world.

All that drama only to say you are going to another smartphone which performs all of the functions you just railed against? I think this is a piss poor troll job.... Perhaps if you ended your diatribe by saying that you were going back to a dumb phone I would have taken you serious.

It seems ironic that OP has taken the time to gripe this out on an anonymous online forum where countless people can read it and reply. This is actually one of the root causes of phone and internet addiction: unnecessary attention from strangers for taking the time to make public something that really doesn’t need to be. The size of the phone is irrelevant. Until we stop relying on very small positive feedback loops for brain stimulation, nothing is going to change.

And that's perfectly ok but to say that it's that way across the board for everyone doesn't seem right. I use my phone much less since getting an Apple Watch but don't think that's a universal thing.

Exactly this. It's not the phone that's to blame for addiction. I'm confident in saying that social media is the issue for probably 90% of the population. I know this because my XS is the phone that I've used least out of any iPhone I've owned and I dropped all forms of social media shortly after buying it. When you see people in public on their phone ignoring the people they're actually with, they're mostly likely scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. My family and friends know I won't put up with that. I've walked away from meals because I was tired of looking at the back of someones phone.

I see it at the gym all the time too. What should be a 45 minute workout turns into 2 hours because they're facebooking for 5, 8, 10 minutes between sets. Nobody in the world I wanna roundhouse kick more when I'm waiting to use something.

Well for each person it’s different but for some it might also be similar

I like my Xs and am glad I bought it. Don’t like the size of my 7+ so I didn’t buy the Max. Dislike the XR — too big and camera zoom requires two hands.

I voted with my pocketbook and got the iPhone I wanted. In two years, if 5G is available, I’ll upgrade and vote again.

End of story.

I would agree that the iPhone XR, to me, feels a bit big.

Otherwise nice phone. Wish it was thinner and maybe less heavy. Less bulky overall.

Love the screen size though. Wish the X or XS was that screen size.

I use my phone to make payments with Apple Pay, turn on my lights, and soon start my car. Don't forget all of the other stuff like listening to my Apple Music, etc.

I don't do social media, yet my phone is still a very important piece of technology. Oh and then there's that calling app too, I forgot how to use it, uses some antiquated system where you have to remember 7-10 numbers.

It's a phone. A tool.

That's all.
