none of the new machines Apple has on offer now strike a balance between price and performance. It’s either a large iPad dressed up as a computer, or a $7000 beast with $500 wheels you buy separately. What a joke.

the Machine Apple should have made is already here:

goodbye Apple. Nice knowing you.

Best to wait and see what the new big iMac will bring then, as this seems to be the machine you're missing. It should come within the next few months.
Think that's good advice. But sounds like OP has made up their mind.

OP, If you believe the other computer is better suited to your needs and you can extricate yourself from the eco system then you should probably do so. As long as it makes you happy and you're willing to invest the time in learning the new system, then I don't see a problem with you changing.

Not really sure why it matters. If this computer is more in line with what you want. Get it instead of an iMac for your next computer. It's not like the days where you'd be comparing DOS with Windows 3.1 vs System 7. Where there was a huge UI difference.

For a laptop. I've got a Macbook Pro 2015. Because I like what Apple offered with their laptops. My next one may not be a Mac. Depending on what other vendors have to offer compared to the Mac. When I'm finally ready to upgrade.

For desktops. I switched to Windows a long time ago. During the PowerPC days.

👏🏻

What a quick lovely story and one that shall be written down in the history books for "Most uninteresting piece of information ever"

edit.. The HP machine would cost me nearly 22000 danish kroner while a high-end recent 27" iMac will set me back around 18000 danish kroner. The 24" Apple Silicon M1 iMac is at 15000 danish kroner for the high end version.

Unless I am switching platforms entirely then I'd rather stick with Mac computers and continue living within the Apple eco-system... I have tried Windows 10 and it's nothing to write home about. Go ahead.

It's so confusing -- tonight I'll be mostly eating mashed potatoes - in case any one wanted to know. Also, I'm not wearing any pants.

Although your message is a bit childish, I actually quite like the HP you've posted. I think more manufacturers should be making beautiful machines so Apple is more under pressure. Competition is good and when it comes to AiO Apple didn't really have anything to worry about for a very long time.

The fact that 27" iMac is still neglected (understandably though) is annoying for a lot of people (OP included) and the waiting is killing us.
However, your machine you have now (2020 iMac) is actually very good so not sure what you are missing there.
You can easily wait a year or 2 more with that one and then I'm sure MxX will again be ahead of competition.
The transition period is always annoying but I wouldn't be coming here and ranting like that.

So, take it easy and see what Apple comes up with before you leave. After all, even the HP is not available yet so its kinda pointless at this point to show something that you can't buy anyway.

We will know soon enough what the M1X will bring and then spring event you are most likely get something awesome :)
If not, then just go. For me, Windows is the deal breaker so I'm sticking with Apple or if I have to go I'll go Linux way.
:)

If we are talking AIOs then the iMac is not neglected at all. There is no AIO in history that has the attention that the iMac has had. All of brands have spotty histories with their AIOs and most are crap to be frank.

Microsoft had a neat idea with the Studio Surface but it's completely underpowered for the price they were asking and that is what I would call neglected(4 core i7 is the max you can get).

HP Envy is good attempt at this market on paper(not the version OP listed but the current 32" model with the Bang & Olufsen front speaker bar. But if you dig into review there are lots of issues with reliability(over heating...etc).

I would never get a Windows AIO based on history so far. Windows bread and butter is desktops.....get one of them and a proper monitor. Heck I would get a Windows laptop and connect it an external display before an AIO.

I've been building my own Windows systems for over 20 years as well as using Windows at work for more years than that. With my latest home-built system getting on in years, I decided to take the plunge and get a 27" iMac a few months ago. Just upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 32GB yesterday. Very happy so far and not such a big learning curve. I'm glad I made the switch.

I've just purchased a full set Windows PC. I let the shop pick the parts and assemble the PC for me.
Specs wise, it's a little bit higher than the base model iMac 2020. (core i5 gen 11, 32GB DDR4, RX6600 XT, gen 4 nVME 512GB)
For the expense, my mini PC cost me $1630
The monitor cost me $1050, it's only 4k, but very big (48")
Total cost was $2680, slightly above the mid-spec iMac 2020, but less in screen resolution, and more in screen estate.
I can attach my old iphone SE as a 4k webcam (80$)
In general, I'm happy with this purchase.

I actually agree with this sentiment. There are no pro machines in Apples line up that I can buy right now. They are in a weird limbo due to the platform change.

I find the answers on this thread quite rude, as it is a valid point made. What exactly is the OP supposed to buy if they need a new computer, as I certainly wont buy Intel macs for my business, and there are no M pro macs.

The HP AIO is a good alternative.

About three years ago I was running a MacMini to an lg monitor and decided to jump ship to an windows machine. Long story short, soon realised what a massive error I made and within months sold the computer and then a new MacMini. In my opinion the OS for a Mac is far slicker and intuitive than windows, in my opinion.

Depends what you are doing. As a business we are far more effective on windows and massively increased productivity since dropping macs in the office (mainly due to lack of roadmap on pro models, and no option for a mid level workstation)

Did you order your HP yet? 😏

From the original article above:
"Its 34-inch 5120 x 2160 (aka 5K) factory-calibrated IPS display sports a 21:9 aspect ratio and rather slim bezels, all contained in a clean silver color."

Hmmm...
This is one of the first 5k larger-than-30" panels I've yet seen.

The article doesn't say who the display's manufacturer is (unless it's HP, but I'm thinking possibly Samsung or LG).

Might Apple be using the same (or similar) display panel for the upcoming "large screen" iMac?

As I'm older and my vision isn't what it once was, I find the 27" 5k iMac (running at "looks like" 1440p) to yield an image that is "too small" for my needs.
I reckon that a 32-24" 5k display, running in HiDPI mode @ "looks like 1440p" would "hit the spot" for me instead.

But there weren't any on the market previously, that I could find (at least at a reasonable price).

I'm wondering if the 34" 5k display will be available as a "standalone monitor" as well?
Could be perfect for the upcoming m1x Mini...
