I view that ad as getting people to rethink just what it is they really want in a computer.

When you think about what many people buy a laptop to do, it’s really just to access the internet. But they don’t really want a PC, just internet access. In this context, the ipad is a better tool for the job, because it lets them access web content from the comfort tof their sofa without having to deal with all the complexities of a PC.

I realise this doesn’t exactly justify the existence or the price tag of the iPad Pro, but I think the value of an ipad comes when you realise that the majority of consumers are actually being overserved by PCs, in that for all the technological improvements we have had, we still are not giving users more of what they want, but instead just saddling them with more issues to contend with.
This is exactly why my mom uses an iPad all day.

will be funny to see the next iPhone Pro powered by the M1 chip announced in another high budget video announcement... only to find that all it does is give us a few camera improvements and a new memoji and still using the same old lightning cable. oh wait, apple's done that for years :p

Camera improvements are one of the few things that get me to upgrade my phone - the 12 PM now. I have a ton of DSLR & compact gear but the improvements on the iPhone (e.g., ProRAW) have made it a much more viable alternative.

Oh I don’t disagree at all. But marketing the new CPU M1 in the iPhones will trigger some people for not being able to run MacOS on the iPhone

That does not make sense. the M1 is a fantastic upgrade from last years model. Geekbench of 7700ish vs 4600ish. Not to mention the neural engine, better graphics, the super duper display. But I guess, nothing to see here, move along folks

Of course it makes no sense. The very same person kept on telling everyone what a “beast of an iPad” this was until she found out it’s not going to turn into a Mac.

I'm debating to get Adobe's photography plan, as that will give me two things.
1. The ability to use my iPad and that's something I'm kind of aching to do
2. move my pictures to the cloud

I'm not sure I want be committed for the foreseeable future to a subscription, I'm a hobbyist and I'm not sure I'm wanting to pay $$ for something that will probably be used rarely.

I totally understand the hesitation with software subscriptions. On the other hand, if it’s a really good offering that brings you joy, why not?
How much is it anyway and could you run it as a trial first to see if you maybe even start doing more with it?

I think the worst part is the planned obsolescence for the Intel MacBook Pros. I never would've guessed they'd start phasing out features from them this quickly. Truly is a sad thing to witness.
I'm not worried. Bought my MacBook last year fully aware that this could happen. Can't wait to run Win11 via BootCamp when available. ;)

Apple is a multi trillion dollar company.

Take a second to think why that is. Really think about it and then you'll realise you only have yourself to blame if you're disappointed.

edit: for those who can't think for themselves. with the M1 iPad Apple saved and made themself A LOT of money. saved money by not creating an entirely new SoC just for iPad and more importantly made a lot of money from people who will blindly buy an Apple product and specifically one that has a higher number (8vs16) just to brag about it.

it's these kind of decisions that got them where they are.
So wrong. iPhone IS what makes Apple. Mac and iPad are just along for the ride...

More like saved money by no longer buying Intel chips and just using the same chip they make for iPad Pros.

Because people still like their products and at least on the tablet side, the competition is poor (I speak from experience as an owner of 6 Android tablets from multiple vendors). On the phone side where there is more competition, Apple still lags Android on overall world sales.
Now, to be fair, Android is an O.S. sold to numerous phone makers world wide. Apple(iOS) is only on their devices.

The new processors have always been about enabling the new camera features in each iteration of the iPhone. For example, my understanding is that the A14 chip is what allows the iPhone 12 to generate live portrait mode previews on the fly, before you actually take the photo.

Also helps with Siri. Machine Learning processes requires few important steps:

1. Create ML model
2. Train the ML model
3. Use the ML model to do predictions

With iOS 15 the idea is for the ML models to be deployed directly on the device. Up to now they were remotely. The training of the model still can't be done on the device (from what I understood) but once the model has been sufficiently trained, it can be deployed on the device. This is not possible if you won't have sufficient power for computation. So things like Live Text, Portrait mode, Deep Fusion, Scribble, Siri suggestions do rely on that new SoC.

Now the thing is how much Developers would generate ideas about ML features that we as consumers can take advantage of.

Simple truth is there are few choices for OS and we are at a point where everything is being streamlined with incremental changes across the board on all platforms and little innovation. There is really not much difference anymore between all of them. Like choosing between a Ford, Chevy and Dodge pickup. Since the early 90s there have been a few huge paradigm shifts that change the way we use technology. The popularization of personal desktop computers, the widespread adoption of the internet and cellular devices, then the shift to making cellular devices into mini pocket personal computers. From there it has been small incremental changes to lead into today. We are looking for that next big innovation to change everything. Personally I stick with Apple for a couple main reasons. Their focus on giving the user privacy controls, consistent updates and long term device support. I ignore any shortcomings they have for those two reasons. Anything else they add on from this point is just extra for me unless they have one of those paradigm shifting moments. As for now, I like that they are boringly consistent.

The chip also plays a big factor in the Lidar for portrait mode and at night

The HDR video recording also uses that power well
