I have a 12.9" iPad 128G - one of the best iPads I've ever purchased. I was thinking about getting the new version, but now the 256G version is more expensive. The resale value of my current model is pretty poor. Apple will take it for $315, but I'm wondering if the 2017 version is worth a net spend of 700+, or if I should put that money towards a MacBook or something
I'm glad your waiting, I'd give that one a minimum 2 more years before you even consider upgrading.

I just picked up a 12.9” 2017 256GB iPP today to replace my 2015 model and certainly the price rise was a bitter pill to swallow and made me wonder if I should wait for “iPad X” in mid-2018. I went into the store planning to get a 10.5” but having compared the two sizes side by side for about an hour, I decided to stick with the 12.9” model. I did forego cellular this time round as my circumstances didn’t really make enough use of it over the last 2 years on the gen 1.

I got a bit of a business discount which wiped out most of the £80 increase and it’s certainly nice to have the British English format keyboard this time around. I’d say the 2017 Smart Keyboard also has improved feel compared to the 2015 model but more importantly the key layout is the same as my MacBook Pro.

Having just finished setting it up, I’m very happy with the upgrade as it definitely a substantial upgrade and I already have a buyer for my 2015 iPP and keyboard for £500 which helps soften the blow. I did go a bit crazy and bought a saddle brown leather sleeve for it which is a bit on the pricey side to say the least but it is very nice so I’ll try to convince myself it was £69 and just enjoy it!

One nice surprise was the simplified setup experience under iOS 11 because just having the old iPad near the new one during initial setup, you can transfer settings really easily. Avoids the need to enter the iCloud or WiFi passwords and generally simplifies setup.

So, all in all I’m very happy but could well have the smile wiped from my face next year when the 2018 iPad X is released! :D

Did your new iPad already come with iOS 11 factory-installed?! If so, that was fast.

No, when I mentioned the quick setup between two iOS 11 devices, I neglected to mention that I had already done the iOS 11 developer certificate install and upgrade. That required me to run through new iPad setup but I just skipped all the non-essential setup steps (Apple ID, Siri, Touch ID etc) to get to safari to install the cert and then restarted to install iOS 11. I then did a reset to go back to the “welcome” screen at which point I got the option to automatically set it up through proximity to my 2015 iPP.

I’m sure you’ll understand, I wasn’t trying to be misleading about the setup process because in a few days time, everyone will have iOS 11 available and the extra steps above won’t be necessary.

My first gen 12.9” iPad Pro has had zero issues with running iOS 11 betas. Feel zero reason to upgrade based on performance.

I have an iPad Air that I’ll be keeping on iOS 10 for my 32 bit apps. Now that I’ve disabled slideover, the Air is responsive again.

My son has the iPad mini version of the iPad Air. Got him it for Xmas in 2013 and he still thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

As much as I was interested in an iPad Pro 10.5 this year, I have no need to upgrade. All my equipment functions fantastically.

Depends on what functionality you really want/need, plus are the other improvements important to you. For me, with a 128GB LTE Air 2, the answer is no, it's not worth updating.
Same. I keep wanting to upgrade and get a new iPad, but there’s nothing wrong with my iPad Air 2, so why waste the money? I still don’t feel like my iPad Air 2 is slow/sluggish like any other iOS device I’ve owned in the past for this long.

I’ve been using my first generation iPad Pro 12.9” AT&T with grandfathered unlimited plan since the day that I stood in line to get it. Each time I consider getting a newer model, I think about the fact this one is still working fine. Buy a new case so it will feel new, save your money for another Apple product.

I recently grabbed a student discount deal from Apple. 5% off ($41.56 discount) the 10.5" iPad but crucially gave me a $190.29 discount off of Beats Solo 3 wireless headphones (which I need as my next phone won't have a headphone jack because smartphone manufacturers hate me).

Now I would have bought the 256GB one if they hadn't upped the price but I wasn't even using 64GB on my 128GB Air 2 so I just couldn't justify spending the $191.06 extra to get there.

I hope 64GB will be OK, it's already making me anxious that I've halved the available storage from my Air 2.
