...analysts expect Apple to report total revenue of $95.51B, against $89.58B for the same quarter last year. That would represent growth of a little under 7%.

Analysts anticipate revenue growth for iPhone, Mac, and wearables (Apple Watch and AirPods). The only area where they expect revenue to be flat is iPad, the consensus view actually predicting a marginal fall year-on-year.

Services are forecast to be the biggest growth area, revenue expected to climb from $16.9B in fiscal Q2 2021 to $20.03B the same quarter this year.

Why would it be different, iPad is a solid product and in comparison to other relatively mature products like Mac hasn’t gone through any huge cpu transition that would have impacted sales a great deal.

oh boy... another thread in the iPad forum that will lead to a holy war between those that think iPad platform is a toy, niche product with an identity crisis, being held back by its OS, etc. against those that have little to no issue with iPad or iPadOS and thinks we should not expect any more than Apple gives.
I'll admit - I'm in the former camp simply because I bought an iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard for over $1500 only to find out it can't do tons that $999 MacBook Air can do. If I had bought a $600 iPad Air and found it an amazing way to get what I needed from a "computer" I would be in the later camp. iPad is polarizing like that..... some experiences on it are like magic and others frustrating as hell.

As a non-analyst here's my guess: M-series processors in the Mac suddenly have everybody talking about the Macs again, and buying them, because it's been landscape-changing, and a 16" 2019 MBP suddenly became an obsolete toy overnight (ok not literally don't flame me). Whereas iPads...list me five things you can really only do on an M1 iPad that you just cannot do on one 3 years old...

My take is that the iPad is a mobile device which can serve as a computer but with certain limitations. The pros are that it’s super portable and with cellular connection you can get online anywhere, the anti are it’s limitations. Because of this I would always go for the base iPad or the Air. Owning an IPP is like living in the centre of London and owning a Ferrari, lovely to have and to look at but basically expensive overkill.

depends, are you comparing a 2018 11” to current if so probs nothing, or a mini 5 v a 12.9 M1 would be like comparing my wife’s Suzuki swift to my Nissan Navara lol

I don't think you could have nailed it more perfectly, it's exactly why I've just ordered a poverty-spec iPad 9 to replace my mk1 Air.

But what if you want the biggest 12.9” , the rest are too small for me

I guess the crux of what i was saying is M1 has brought a huge amount of power to a device which debatably can't use it. I respect others have opposite opinions. But let's say I had a pre-M1 IPP, I'd see no point in upgrading. Which is why the analysts are probably predicting the market won't grow.

I’d say the fact that it will last a good 7 years with M1 power is enough to me v the gimped throw away cheaper models, also there is no cheaper 12.9” the rest are too small for me.

I think they did that deliberately. They realised most people wouldn't see the point in an M1 processor but they might at least be drawn to the Macbook-sized screen, and if that's a make or break reason for you then fair play.

Not sure I agree that 'the gimped throwaway cheaper models' will be obsolete in any less time than a current IPP. Ask me in five years.

iPad is in a weird place. What does Apple think people want to use iPad for?

I reckon a lot of people have been upgrading their Macs because of covid, and there is less cash in the kitty for buying ipads, which are still mostly seen as a different/secondary device.

List 5 things you can do on an M1 Ultra Mac Studio, that you can't do on a five year old Intel Mac Mini.

Tim always finishes his keynotes by saying we can't wait to see what you do with the new technology, so I don't think they know. They just throw it at us and hope. lol.

$20 billion in R & D. That’s how they know we want widgets and App Library a year after iOS but definitely not a weather app.

Here's seven...sorry for the edits I keep thinking of more:

- Use four 6K displays and one 4K
- Max it out with 128GB RAM
- Render multi-stream 8K videos
- Create ultra high resolution 3D graphics renders in about 1/4 of the time
- Mix huge multitrack audio files in Logic, ProTools and Ableton, loaded with real time effects and processing, without the processor screaming for mercy and the whole thing collapsing in an overload error
- Compile code in a tiny fraction of the time
- Have a hope in hell's chance of playing AAA games

Your go...

From my perspective - I was a heavy iPad user since 2018 when the iPad Pro 11 form factor came out. Absolutely loved it and used it as my primary device for many years. 2022 I decided that I wanted to go back to laptops because I wanted more capability in front of me. So I got a 16 MBP and I love the device so I sold my iPad Pro 11 to another Macrumors member here.

I only really used my iPad for consumption, book reading, and light communication/forum posting. And I usually only used it at home so switching to a MBP for all that was really doable for me.

Obviously I can't take my usage sample and apply it to all users .... but if I did I'd say that iPad does its job well but the market for it is saturated and since there really hasn't been many new advances, it won't see a lot of growth. People continue to use it for a notepad, art device, consumption device, and its other abilities, while they're beginning to grow, can be done by a MacBook a lot easier.

While I really like my 16' MBP's screen and have spent many hours reading on it. There's nothing quite like curling up with an iPad Pro 11 to read a book for a weekend with a matte screen protector. Almost makes me want to go out and drop $500 on a refurbished iPP11. :p

Been enjoying reading on this (MBP 16) for the last month and the fact that I don't have yet another device sitting around anymore. Reading magazines is actually doable as well:

Not sure if I'll ever go back to iPad. But it is a GREAT device and does its jobs well imo.

its polarizing bevause people have no other hobby then figting over what they think is better. Just shut the f up people and let everyone use waht he wants to use and what he think is the best to use
