The challenge is that Steve Jobs got it right. It's a niche product that compliments the core phone and notebook. iPad is only superior to a mobile phone and a notebook in 4 of these 7 functions (reading, photos, video, games), and none of these 4 functions have grown or changed in a manner that makes upgrading an iPad a necessity.

It's not some sign of disrespect when analysts say that there won't be huge growth in a category where a 7 year old iPad Air 2 does an identical job of large screen reading, photo viewing, video watching, and gaming.

Here's seven...sorry for the edits I keep thinking of more:

- Use four 6K displays and one 4K
- Max it out with 128GB RAM
- Render multi-stream 8K videos
- Create ultra high resolution 3D graphics renders in about 1/4 of the time
- Mix huge multitrack audio files in Logic, ProTools and Ableton, loaded with real time effects and processing, without the processor screaming for mercy and the whole thing collapsing in an overload error
- Compile code in a tiny fraction of the time
- Have a hope in hell's chance of playing AAA games

Your go...
So basically it does the same things faster, just like the M1 iPad does.

Yeah, I upgrade because I'm a retired engineer who likes shiny new tech toys but my wife, daughter and sister are all using older iPads (Air 2, 10.5) and feel no need - or desire - to upgrade. What they have does everything they want from a tablet.

Not sure I agree that 'the gimped throwaway cheaper models' will be obsolete in any less time than a current IPP. Ask me in five years.

We’re replacing a 2016 iPad Pro 9.7 and 2018 iPad 6th gen at the same time. The 2GB RAM makes these devices stutter/freeze too much particularly on iOS 15.

Meanwhile, the 2017 iPad Pro still works pretty well if you’re not multitasking. Reckon it’s got 2-3 years of life left for someone like my mom.

While I really like my 16' MBP's screen and have spent many hours reading on it. There's nothing quite like curling up with an iPad Pro 11 to read a book for a weekend with a matte screen protector. Almost makes me want to go out and drop $500 on a refurbished iPP11. :p

Been enjoying reading on this (MBP 16) for the last month and the fact that I don't have yet another device sitting around anymore. Reading magazines is actually doable as well:

Not sure if I'll ever go back to iPad. But it is a GREAT device and does its jobs well imo.

I don’t think I’d ever wanna go back to reading on the laptop. iPads (and e-ink readers and smartphones) are just so much more comfortable for that.

I’d often get neck pain and leg cramps reading on the laptop in bed. With tablet/slate-type devices, I can toss and turn all I want to get a more comfortable position.

Very much agreed. I do 100% of my reading on a relaxing chair with a body pillow as a prop to bring the device to eye level. I did this with my iPP 11 and I do this with my MBP. If I was reading in ANY other way I'd be going iPad definitely.

My back kills me if I lay down and read (whether on my stomach or back). lol.

I dont think so. We are in the beginning of a recession.

People will keep a roof over their head, pay for medicine, buy food.

Rather than keep up with the jones and buy the latest high end APPLE Toy.
