Airfoil is capable of adding a lot of magic to the mix. For example you can manually adjust the delay per device to compensate for speakers with a longer lag. I have an airport express connected to to my Sonos Play:5. It will airplay to all of my Sonos speakers with about a 3 second delay. With Airfoil I can use all of my Sonos and Airplay speakers together and still stay in sync.
I don't expect that Apple will allow this versatility natively.
Yes Airfoil is awesome, I have used it since it was conceived. Adjusting the latency is a great feature. It will more than likely be the way around if Apple does any major changes with the protocols and or device requirements.

True, but the protocol is obviously capable of it, so I'm wondering why we needed an "AirPlay 2", which obsoletes existing speakers, including my rather pricey JBL Authentics, for this. :)
the answer to this lies in your question

Has any information been posted about AirPlay 2? I'm just wondering why it needs to exist. Apple says that it allows you to play the same music on multiple speakers around a house, but AirPlay has supported that feature for years; I play music from iTunes on my Mac on the Mac itself, an AirPlay speaker in the bedroom and an Apple TV in the living room and they are perfectly synchronized.

So what does AirPlay 2 bring to the table? How will AirPlay 1 devices be supported? I figured we could use a thread for gathering this information as it comes available.

Multi speaker support is not available for iOS. Hence AirPlay 2.

I have no sources to back this up but for me there's absolutely zero chance Airport Express will be updated for Airplay 2. You'll still be able to stream to them one speaker at the time with iOS 11. But no multi-speaker support.

Is multi-Room Airplay for audio working for anyone? I’ve updated my iPad and two Apple TVs and I’m not given an option to choose multiple target devices.

I installed iOS 11 yesterday on my 6s Plus but it does not work for me. I didn't think it's a hardware or firmware issue - just a software issue that iOS 11 solved. I still can't stream to multiple Bowers & Wilkins speakers from my iPhone (but I can through iTunes).

AirPlay 2 is not included yet in iOS 11. It will most likely be released together with the HomePod.

Are you implying that it's solely a software issue that will be solved through a future iOS update? Do we have any idea when Airplay 2 soft ware update will be released? Thanks.

Yes, it’s a software issue. I guess it will be added to iOS in December.

Also, your speakers will require firmware updating so you might want to contact B&W.
