This is very disappointing that they haven't enabled iPhone 4 videos yet. I was really looking forward to it. Oh well, iOS has evolved well over the years with updates so hopefully they will continue adding features. I like what they added to iOS in this update but I wanted more. So far using what Airplay actually works on, it is absolutely brilliant. They just need to expand it out to more applications. Maybe they're just doing it in stages to work out the initial bugs but it seems to be pretty bug free to me.

There are jb apps out now that let you mirror the entire screen to a tv using video cables. Theoretically they could update it to mirror the screen using airplay. At least i would think so

Yeah, I'm not interested in jailbreaking.

I have to imagine that there are apps that can open and play videos from camera roll. It could then have it's own AirPlay functionality. I'd pay for an app that could fix this.

Would you mind posting a link to that video, along with the time that he promises this?

I failed to type the word "didn't" in one sentence of my post. Unfortunately that changed the entire meaning. Steve did not promise iPhone recorded video would be able to be transferred via AirPlay.

Wow. I coulda swore Steve said you would be able to do this.

Yeah... me too!! Actually so much I had to turn on my ATV and tune in to the keynote podcast of SJ introducing AppleTv and Airplay to figure out if it was just my wishfull thinkin, or SJ is screwing with us here... and actually... Jobs says: "... come home with a bunch of photos on your iPhone and watch a slideshow on your flatscreen"... he DIDN'T say recorded videos in any way!!

BULLOCKS!!!

SO disapointed!!! And for the life of me, I just cannot see the reason why not to include your own recorded and edited videos... just cannot!!

4.2 User guide even says you can't stream videos, apparently. I guess I just got all caught up in the moment. I figured if he was streaming content from the iTunes store, I'd be able to stream content from the Rob Store. :)

I've not got an ATV2 yet, just the first one. I'm happy to upgrade as long as I get some new features to make up for my lack of local storage. I had hoped airplay was that killer feature (well, after apps but I've resigned myself to the fact it won't have them for a while), but the more I read about it the more I'm getting a little disheartened :( Can't believe it wont stream home movies from iPhone :(

Please someone renew my faith and tell me how cool airplay is... ;)

I'd love to tell you how cool it is, but I can't. With AirPlay I can:
1. Stream movies from my iDevice to my AppleTV2. Big whoop, I can already do this via Home Sharing. Actually Home Sharing is better as I have more than 64 GB of movies, so instead of just streaming what is on the iPad, I can stream the whole library.
2. View Pictures just taken on my iPhone. Is that really a huge demand?
3. Stream movies from an iOS device. See #1, you can already do that with the Apple TV.
4. Stream videos from YouTube App. Ummm, why? There's already a YouTube channel on the AppleTV menu.

So, in summary, AirPlay to AppleTV adds a redundancy clause to your streaming options. Now, if they add support for VIDEOS you have just taken with your iPhone4, then I can see it being worth it.

Was the number one thing I was looking forward to with airplay.

To say I am disappointed would be an understatement.:(

I just rewatched the Steve Jobs keynote introducing AirPlay and he didn't promise recorded iPhone 4 video to AppleTV via Airplay, I thought he had. Still I am, stunned, stunned this isn't there... it is why I bought 3 AppleTVs.

Whether or not he mention it specifically, is there anybody who didn't just assume that you would be able to do it? When he said that you could stream video from your IOS devices, it was a foregone conclusion to me and probably everybody else that you could stream videos from your iPhone that you just shot. I'm still shocked that you can't. I hope it's coming soon.

Originally you couldn't watch videos shot on your iPhone and synced to iPhoto through Home Sharing. Now you can. I'm sure this is something they plan to add as well. I'm just as disappointed as everyone else but some people are acting like this is the final implementation of Airplay. Come on, this is one of their most innovative features. They even added a entirely new category on their Apple TV forums today for just Airplay so I'm sure they will be adding to its capabilities as its an important feature to them that differentiates them from all their competitors.

Solution (Sort of)

This blows. But if you want to be able to AirPlay the videos you shot, import them through iPhoto. Then drop the video into your iTunes library. Then sync the movie back to your iPhone through iTunes.

Yup, lame. Kind of defeats the purpose but it does work.

Disappointed

adding my disappointment to the crowd. It is really silly that they did not include this feature. It is great that I can share photos from my iphone right away without having to sync with itunes..... but not allowing videos?

I even tried uploading to Mobile Me gallery and that only supports audio...

I hope they fix this ASAP.

Also lame because I have iTunes organize my library, meaning the video would be in the Photos app on my iPhone, in my iPhoto library and also in my iTunes library, and finally in the iPod app on my iPhone. You can delete some of those but at that point I could just import it to my iTunes library and stream using home sharing, not putting it back on to my iPhone.

I asked the same question at discussions.apple.com and it looks like this is not supported. I'm with you though, it was one of the big things I was excited about. Honestly, who cares if you can stream stuff from your videos on the iPhone that was synced from iTunes. Those videos are already accessible on Apple TV because it can play anything in iTunes via Home Sharing. What a stupid choice to not stream videos recorded with an iPhone. Maybe a jb app for the iPhone will come out that will let you stream anything.

Both Airplay and AirPrint are a STUPID joke.
I'm sooooo disappointed!

I am on hold with Apple Techical support to ask about this issue now, to see if there is a workaround, or if it was intentionally left out. I will post updates later but wouldn't hold my breath. The technician actually asked me what airplay was, if it was an app I had downloaded from the AppStore.

UPDATE:
I had to tell him to just forget about it as apparently I know more about Apple products than he does. His big advice after putting me on hold, was to delete the AirPlay app from my iPhone, and try and redownload it and see if that made a difference.

Good gawd that is scary!

It's a good thing I only bought one to try out!
And I won't buy anymore if this feature was intentionally left out!

That would be a bit difficult considering that the app would first have to convert the image into an H.264 video stream and then send that over AirPlay. Unless they had direct access to the hardware video compression capabilities in the A4's GPU that type of jailbreak or hack isn't likely to happen. Realtime H.264 video compression using just the CPU would require something like a Core 2 Duo or better (or hardware video compression support in the GPU) and the iPad/iPhone's A4 CPU isn't anywhere close to being that fast.

I was afraid someone would say that, what a disappointment! :(

Add me to the list of disappointed. I figured the stinking Gallery app would allow AirPlay video. Why in the world would someone want to show photos from their library and leave out the videos? Someone get a strongly worded email to Steve in asap. This stinks...

No iPhone video -- raw or from iMovie

So after reading some of this blog, I had an idea that maybe -- for whatever reason -- Airplay might work with videos I exported from the phone's iMovie app to the Apple TV. No dice. I even tried within the iMovie app to display a project but only audio is available to stream.

I even tried the exported movie that had been transferred to my iPad, using the double-tap of the home button to get to the Airplay button. Again, only audio was streamed to the Apple TV.

Very annoyed, along with everyone else. The early reviews (Macworld, ArsTech, etc.) of Airplay fail to mention this issue.

I am pretty sure this limitation is due to the tv networks objecting to Airplay being available for any h.264 video in iOS. Some of them have paid streaming apps where the streaming plan is cheaper for the iPhone/iPad than the big screen counterpart. Airplay, as it was intended, would allow you to have a cheaper streaming plan and play it on the big screen. I think Apple didn't have enough time to negotiate licencing or to come up with effective API that would block Airplay in certain apps, hence they disabled it alltogether. It is the only reasonable explanation why audio is supported but video is not given that technically iPhone/iPad is capable of it.

I think videos in Camera Roll are using different API to play than the API used in iPod app, hence it was also axed when Apple had to disable Airplay for other apps.
