Hi all,

Just to close the loop on this -

I placed the order for a pair in Space Grey and I've been using them for the last couple of days, and so far I'm blown away.

Build quality, sound quality (including noise cancellation), ease of use, and comfort all far surpass my Sony WH-1000XM3's. Very pleased I decided to bite the bullet.
I was able to snag an open box set at $350 out the door in blue. They are awesome at this price point, I just couldn’t justify them at $550+.

I do not agree with this at all. Nearly all music you are streaming is lossless and whatever isn't is generally a high enough quality to be able to notice the difference. I have owned a few wired headphones and currently have HIFIMAN Arya's with a Schiit Modius/Asgard stack and they totally blow away the AirPods Max. I love my AirPods Max and they are very good for what they are, but they are not even close to a wired headphone of quality.

Well, you don't have to agree. The Beaty of freedom is that everyone can stay with your own statements.

But, if you are so critical in your listenings, even the pricy HiFiMan won't fulfill all your needs. Right?

We are not audiophiles, and this topic is note about that. We are music lovers telling other music lovers what we like most.

The holly graal of HiFi audio is not been discussed here. ?

I think the step up in noise cancellation is the biggest surprise, I wasn't expecting that. The sound is beautiful as well - I listen to multiple different genres and it handles them all amazingly well.
Have you tried the transparency mode?

Enabled it and ask someone next to you to start a conversation with you... Wow!!!!

Transparency mode works incredibly well; my Sony's have something similar but it isn't anywhere near as good.

I paid £450 for mine (£550 retail) and that is still a lot of money but feels right when comparing to the competition.

A big plus for me is the seamless connectivity between my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook - that is probably the biggest benefit over my Sony's.

That is great, and also the noise cancellation you mentioned. I am very happy with mine, use them also for working from home. Great stuff! Personally, I never have condensation issues, but YMMV.

Congratulations to your successful purchase!

OK..I'm not an audiophile and to top that I have some hearing loss. On my Mac I've used a FIIO K3 and some Sony MDR 7506's it's a fairly neutral setup for ~$250. I recently bought a set of refurb AirPods Max on Amazon for $400, they're OK on the Mac and great relative to the AirPods Pro with iJunk. I don't really regret buying them but I have no context relative to other bluetooth noise cancelling headphones.

TLDR: They're fine cans but not competition to a DAC and quality cans.

Bought mine from Amazon Australia - AU$729 for space grey - was originally going for white (cheaper) but more maintenance. Apple store Brisbane is charging AU$899.

Over a year in on my APM’s, and the short and sweet of it all is that I love them. I have APP’s and have been a very keen headphone enthusiast for years. The APM’s are really great in their niche.

Tough question front up, but afterwards pretty easy.
I first had the AirPods gen 1 and used them for literally everything they were or were not intended to do.
Wenn they finally refused to work, I told my self: come on, try AirPods Pro…
And I wasn’t satisfied, not that much difference at the end of the day.
So I tried the max and what shall I say:
That’s a great sound stage, comfort and ANC is great!

Congrats, I found the same thing. I have not listened to the Sony’s since.

Grabbed the Blue APM late last week with amazon having huge discount on them ... have yet to open yet. I want to have quality time with them rather than open and give them a 5 minute rush first run! haha.

Sure it don't. I think it's not its purpose.

I meant, AirPods Max have a wonderful and warm sound. Straight out the box. You don't need to mess with special files, nor use expensive equipment or deal with specific cables.

Pick it up, wear it and enjoy high quality music with comfort right away.

I have a couple of high quality headphones paired with great DACs. But since I got mine, am listening less to FLAC via DACs and using APM more for its simplicity and high quality sound.

In a matter of fact, no DAC will be enough to handle all desires from a music lover. lol

I have airpod pros and use transparency mode a lot. I often need to be able to hear what's going on in my environment. I've not been willing to pony up the $ to buy the Max. And the absence of a really effective transparency mode has prevented me from buying any of the lower priced competitors.

interesting discussion here. I am also considering buying APM so I went yesterday to try them out and comapre them to my current APP. I was standing there and listening to couple songs for 20 minutes or so on APM and then on APP and must say how impressed I was with the APP performance. I mean there were few songs were I liked the sound quality of the APM better over the APP, but considering the price difference and convenience of the APP I would say they are for me better choice for the daily use. Don’t take me wrong, the APM delivered superb sound experience, but when I compared them directly to APP I found them little bit behind in mids and highs in most songs I’ve been listening.

Now if we are talking about the Noice cancellation, the APM performed much better as expected of course. With the longer battery life per charge and great NC I am still considering to buy them to have, but most likely will wait for the price to drop little bit because 599€ (Slovakia) is too much to justify the buy.

Nice post.
Funny, but I feel the same way about my AP3. I do have the APM, but most days I'd just as rather listen to my little buds. They're really quite amazing. Of coarse, when I need NC it's the Max.

I bought the blue AirPod Max when they were $449 on Amazon and my friend had just paid me $80 for helping her on a project so I said why not and bought them on impulse. Do they sound great? Absolutely. Do I use them only at home? Yes. Do I use them all the time? No. Would I buy them at $550. No. I don't regret the purchase after basically paying $370 plus tax but I definitely would not pay $550. I've had no condensation issues so far. I use them once or twice a week and leave them laying flat on my desk.
