No hissing nor coil whine on mine, running iOS 15.1 and 4B52 firmware. An amazing rich and immersive sound, directly compared to AP2. ?OP, swap yours, as they are most likely defective. ?

Might depend on how sensitive your ears are? I agree the sound quality is otherwise excellent. A step up from the original AirPods for sure.

I have a very good hearing and “musical ears” (piano), so I would most likely spot any anomalies, especially since I was listening for them to check. If something cracks or hisses in your pair, definitely swap them. ?

Just a quick update, had hissing in the right AirPod 3, went to the apple store and got a second pair (not replacement, wanted to compare). The pair I got at the store is flawless, no hissing and no coil wine. Picked up the older pair just to make sure I'm not crazy, and the right earpiece was still hissing.

Just received mine, and have same problem. I hope this is something which will be fixed with the software update

Firmware version: 4B61

This is strange, as my firmware version is 4B52 (older?) and they sound fine. ??‍♂️

Then probably this might be hardware issue, not related to firmware ?

I have just checked mine and they have now also updated themselves to 4B61 firmware, no anomalies either. So any hissing or other noises are probably due to hardware issues, so better swap them. ?

Same problem here. At least I am not alone with this problem. I am afraid this is a hardware problem...

Having the same problem here. Kind of a bummer because otherwise they are a step above the 2nd gen AirPods they replaced. Trying to decide if it bothers me enough to return them or not...

How noticeable is the hissing and coil whine for those who are experiencing it?
I am not an audiophile, but I immediately experienced it, the exact second the AirPods connected to my iPhone 13 Pro. As many people in this thread said, the overall experience with this new headphones is very good, but at this point my brain and my ears always hear the buzzing sound and cool whine, and I am very disappointed and let down.

You can mask it by going into accessibility and turn on background sounds like ocean or rain, but then turn the
volume of it down to zero.

What’s the purpose of that? Doesn’t it return when you open the music app or listen a video?

I have it on mine, the right ear more than the left. I have really sensitive hearing, and it's a disorienting feeling for me. I've compared them with the AirPods 2 and the sound is definitely there. The audio quality is really good though, they have a much richer, fuller sound than the AirPods 2. Hopefully the replacement pair won't have the same issue.

I am happy with my gen 3’s. Thank god my are quiet.

You shouldnt have to mask a noise that shouldnt be there. Defective devices probably. Wonder if there is a bad batch out there.

I have a very slight(barely audible) rattle on my right airpod. It’s nothing super distracting but it is there. Is this what people are experiencing or is it much more noticeable?
Should I contact Apple about a replacement?

It depends how much someone is sensitive, I can hear a persistent sound, rattling, buzzing sound that hurts my ears after 5 minutes. I tried the “background sounds thing” and it didn’t work. I will contact Apple Support tomorrow.
