Yup, that’s been my experience as well. I’m sure Apple’s W2/W3 chip will definitely resolve this particular issue. I’m also on a 6s so there’s the very real possibility my generation of BT chip may be the hold up here, who knows?
I'm on a 6 with no issues, so I would imagine it should only be better with newer models.

had same problem in my jeans (front left pocket, nothing else in there) with an se in a thin clear polycarbonate powersupport airjacket

ended up returning airpods after three days. great in all cases except walking around with my hands in my pockets, which i do often...couldnt believe apple didnt test this

I returned my airpods after having a similar issue with dropouts when walking with the phone in the left jeans pocket (or even held in my hand in the same location... metal belt buckle?).

wondering if it has to do with me also having an SE

Picked up AirPods yesterday and while they work great indoors, they tend to lose signal quite a bit when my phone is in my pocket and I'm out for a walk...especially if my hand goes near my pocket.

Anyone else experienced this?

Nope. I am able to get good audio with my phone in a running pouch, inside my backpack, while I play basketball. I put the backpack behind the pole, and get a strong signal anywhere half court. It only starts to go out when I am on the other side, near the other hoop.

I have this same issue. I have an SE, and I am on my third pair of AirPods, so I am fairly sure it is the phone. I have done network reset, factory reset, and replaced the bluetooth antenna.

It only happens outdoors. Indoors, the signal is great up to 20-30 ft.

I made a thread about this just last week (didn't know that this one already existed) having just bought Airpods and experiencing the same thing (more the occasional minor hiccup than a full lost connection) with my 8 Plus.

I can walk around my house while leaving my phone wherever with no problem, but very occasionally, just as I put my phone in my jean pockets, there would be a little hiccup, so to speak. I unpaired and re-paired them the day after I first noticed it and over the last week it's only happened once. Shouldn't happen at all given the price of these things, but probably not worth exchanging over.

I've got 3M 'WorkTunes' headphones, and they don't work well if the iPhone isn't on the right side, where the antenna is, yet the AirPods seem to work great but don't work under ear protectors at all.

I did have major issues with a JayBird headphone set and biking. I put my iPhone in a ZipLoc bag in my back pocket,a nd the Jay Birds always cutout. Maybe it was the sweat, or the baggie? I couldn't put them much closer unless I glued a mount to the helmet.

Bluetooth reception doesn't make sense at times.

I had an older Motorola headphone set and it wouldn't work with any device I placed in my pocket. I was using an iPod with Bluetooth, and had to actually carry it in my hand to get the headphones to work. Made no sense to me. 30 feet? Really? Not even close...
[doublepost=1555248251][/doublepost]And is this the new ones? My original ones seem to work really well, except for the right one getting old and having some battery issues.

Had the same problem. Then noticed if I got more than 4ft from my phone I lost BT connection. Took phone to apple store and they said it was a hardware issue with the phone. Swapped out the phone and no problems now. I can get close to 45 ft away before issues start

Very likely there is nothing wrong with your AirPods if you have a 5S, 6, 6S. It’s your phone just being old and having a crappier BT component.

When I upgraded from 6 to XS Max, after experiencing this a lot, and keeping the same AirPods. the problem went away completely. So maybe easy on the returning AirPods over and over expecting a different result.

I'm bumping this thread because I've recently been experiencing this a lot. 1st Gen Airpods with an iPhone 8 Plus. I can be on a different floor of my house and they work fine, but put my phone in my jean pockets and sound starts to cut in and out... go figure!

Anyone come up with a fix short of getting new Airpods?

I’ve had both generations of AirPods with iPhone 7 and iPhone X and XS Max. Never had an issue with my phone in my pocket or in my rucksack.
You must be wearing your jeans wrong. Seriously though is it possible that you can pop into a local Apple Store and get them to try your AirPods with another phone

I have the 3M WorkTunes headphones, and if I have the iPhone on my left belt, and wear the WorkTunes properly, they drop out rather often while mowing. I just wear them 'backwards'. They are ambidextrous with no defined left or right.

I wonder if the AirPods have a 'master' pod, and if swapping the phone to the other side of the body would improve the reception. Bluetooth signals are attenuated by water, and humans are primarily water. *shrug*
